Herman Miller Chairs: e.g. Mirra 2 $1095 (Was $1290) and Sayl $625 (Was $790) Sydney Pickup or + Delivery @ Living Edge

1410

Updated description after people provided before prices - thanks.

Some great bargains at Living Edge on Herman Miller chairs. These do not come on sale very often and are the cheapest I have seen for these models (there are different variations on each chair - the below ones have essentially all optional extras). Yes, they are still expensive. They do have 12 year warranties and are IMO worth it if you spend all day at a computer screen.

Shipping is $60 in Sydney or free pickup in Alexandria warehouse.

Here are some examples:
Mirra 2($1095)

Sayl($625)

Aeron Size B($1250)

Not many stores in Australia sell these. The compare prices above are pulled from badbacks.com.au because I couldn't find the 'before' price on LivingEdge - e.g. for the Aeron.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FF.. OFFICE CHAIR FOR $1K RRP… Made of paltinum or what?!

    • You've never heard of designer furniture?

      • -4

Yes,as an astute oxbargainer, I don't fancy paying for "brand". I pay for its value, just don't see how this would be that much better than a $200 office chair. I would rather buy a $200 chair and add some orthopaedics cushion and support and still cost less.

        • Unfortunately I'm yet to see something are the $200 price point that is anywhere close to the Herman Miller chairs in build quality and adjustability. I did try!

A good chair is very important if you're spending a significant amount of time in it. For a lot of people, a grand isn't a lot of money for a robust, comfortable, balanced chair that has crazy after sales support for more than a decade. I'm absolutely not a fan of the Sayl though. Work has those in the meeting rooms, and they're not worth it.

People spend money on things that matter to them, especially when it comes to comfort.

Spend 8 hours a day in a chair and you will understand.

    • +3

You sit on a milk crate?

    • I started out with ~$100 chairs in my twenties. I've also tried $200 chairs, $300 chairs and at the moment I have a $500 chair.

They're all pretty underwhelming, tbh. I spend more time on my chair than any other activity. Including sleep.

This sort of quality seems appealing.

Spend more than 8 hours at my desk for work each day.

Herman Miller Embody chair is worth every penny.

    • I bought mine about a year ago, Its amazing, well worth the money.

Do they come with a built-in massager, heating & cooling feature? Plus memory function if more than 1 people are using it?:P

    • No, but neither does my 25yo Carolla, and it cost an awful lot more when new.
Anyway, if I had one of these chairs, I wouldn't want others using it.

    • +1

Sonny boy, do you know much a good massage chair costs?

      About 4x this. :)

  • I got one second hand off gum tree but it looked almost brand new. Best investment ever for my home office. So much comfy than th Officeworks chair

  • I have been using an Officeworks plush black leather chair bought in 2006 (12 years back) for $99 then. Been using it for about 10 hours a day for the last 12 years. Very comfortable, no back pain, no other issues and still going strong!

  • As somebody who spends a lot of time in chairs for various reasons using a computer, laptop or whatever this seems like a godsend if they can live up to the price.

Any place to try them or just a really good recommended store to try good chairs.. emphasis on good meaning you have purchased one from there or tried it out previously and can recommended to somebody else.

Just had a few days lan party sitting down for God knows how many hours on hard wooden dining chairs and I can feel it in my back now.. getting physically unfit and old haha lol not a good combination.. I have an arm chair recliner lazyboy clone at home but something I could maybe carry around or cheaply/half decently buy and leave around at friends and families places might be nice to actually have.. Really appreciating quality/expensive/premium/good build stuff nowadays and yes while I still do like to live frugally I value and cherish good solid worthy products now more over than some cheap crap fixes.

Long term Aeron user who usd to get back pain with extended sitting - simply the best chair I have ever had and and I have always bought good quality ones. I had a hydraulic failure and Living Edge sent out someone to replace the strut on site.

Are HM chairs overpriced - no question that they are however if they are the right chair for you, the $$$$ you paid is soon forgotten.

After paying $500 on an office chair and to have the chair replaced twice due one fault or another (including having the Gas lift to stop working) I had enough of it and wanted to exchange it for another chair. The locally owned office store I bought my chair from were extremely helpful and their service was impeccable. Not only did they allow me to exchange it for another chair but they also allowed me to test out any chair I wanted at home for 1-2 weeks at a time.

First, I tried every chair around the same price range of $500+ but none of them ticked all the boxes I wanted. You could call me picky but for some reason I find it difficult to find a chair that is comfortable for my body.
With no luck, and with nearly all hope lost I decided to try the Herman Miller Chairs. I'd had my eyes on Herman Miller chairs since the very day I walked into the store but couldn’t wrap my head around trying to justify paying that much money on a chair.

From Herman Miller range I tried the Mirra 2 for 2 weeks and after that I tried the Embody. At the end of the month I decided to choose the Embody chair as this chair provided me better upper back and lumber support. I loved the Mirra 2 chair as I felt the responsiveness in the Synchronic tilt felt more natural to me and I loved that the chair allowed me to position the chair in a locked- in tilting forward position for when I needed to get closer to my desk. The hard material around the back and around the seat of the chair felt uncomfortable across my back and underneath my legs when sitting down. I wasn’t a fan of how the Mirra 2 butterfly suspension back felt on my back.

As you are aware, the seating comfort is very subjective to the individual so all of the above is my experiences in my journey of determining what chair is appropriate for me. I hope you find this helpful and provide you insight in the journey of discovering what chair is best for you.

Another chair to consider is the Okamura Contessa. Bought one 4 years ago and it's still going strong. Paid $1050 for it with a fabric seat and Mesh back.

    • I’m currently looking at this and using the configuration tool. Did you get yours with lumbar support? Most of the photos they show without it so wondering if it’s any good.

      • Yep mines got Lumber support. Thought it was a standard feature but it looks like it may be an optional add on now. Also noticed that their's an updated model called Contessa Seconda.

        • Yes I was looking at Contessa II, where lumbar support is optional and retro-fit, but strangely it looks like it doesn’t have depth adjustment of the lumbar - just height adjustment from what I can see. I’m not sure why they would omit that. Is there a reason you chose fabric seat over the mesh?

          • @rexstar: When i was reading online reviews for the chair at the time, the general consensus was that fabric seats are more comfortable. Must admit i think it is the way to go and i don't regret the decision.

so this chair is basically the shoes of RM Williams. Huge unjustified price tag but people still buy them :D :D

    • +1

Not exactly since the quality of construction/engineering justifies the price. In shoe brands think more along the lines of Church’s, Grenson, Loake etc.

    • +2

How did you draw that conclusion?

The deal has received quite a few upvotes, almost all comments are positive, so not entirely sure why you'd make that judgement?

Unless, you're trying to state your own opinion, which, ofcourse, you're entitled to.

    • I always thought old Reginald Murray Williams wore his own boots, never knew he got around standing barefoot on a couple of Herman Miller chairs!!! Thanks for educating me, you learn something every day.

  • Thanks OP, my business just treated me to a Mirra 2 chair.

  • +2

    Before prices on livingedge:

    Mirra 2: $1290 (mar 16!)

    SDayl: $790 (mar 18)

    Aeron Size B: $1495 (apr 18)

OP might want to update prices in description. Discounts not as much as displayed.

    • +1

OP doesn't seem to care. I posted a comment with the original price of the Aeron chair but he just ignored it.
Btw, he only created his OB account a day before this post. Something doesn't look right…

      • Have updated title now.

FYI OP was overseas and not checking OZB everyday. OP also created his OZB account on the 28 November 2018 (long time lurker), not a day before this post…

  • Where in Melbourne can I try the Mirra 2 chair?

    • +1

      Living Edge Richmond.

  • +6

Went in to Living Edge to check out the chairs and learned a couple of pieces of information after schmoozing up with the salesman.

This is a good deal but not an insane deal. They having a lot of these chairs on hand and need to get rid of them. They are cheap because they are already in stock but any special orders will be RRP. They can basically give you this price +5% any time of the year if you bargain with them. This is literally what he said to me.

So in conclusion, this is a good deal, not an amazing deal. BUT, I ended up buying the Embody after sitting in it.

Look, is it 6 times more comfortable than my ikea chair? Is it 6 times more adjustable? Is it 6 times more weight bearing? Answer is probably not…

But value is not only in the item but in the person buying something. I value my back and comfort and this chair is damn comfortable. I'm happy to pay a bit more for a chair that took a bit of ingenuity to build and that is widely regarded as a great chair. I live once… I want to experience the best that I can afford and 150 dollars a year for 12 years I can handle. I worked it out to 9 cents an hour.

The above discussion is pointless. Everything in life that's premium has a premium price tag. If it's all about value, everybody would buy it… I also like my car which is a lot more expensive than a corolla because of a lot of comforts it provides. (and no, it doesn't go 17 times faster). Even the Ozbargain community can understand this right? Some of us just want to live a good life?

How can you judge others what their comfort is worth to them? Because you can debate to the moon and back never get an answer.

    • How much did you end up paying for the Embody?

      • I paid 1650 all in.

Have had it for a week and can report its easily the best chair I've ever owned. I now don't any back pain playing video games which has extended my FIFA time to 4 hours consecutive with no breaks. My wife hates the new chair.

        • The embody smaller upper part concerns me, why I intended on getting another Mirra. But the Mirra 2 much lighter weight has me concern structurally how well built it is over the prior version

Im curious to see why the Embody costs so much more though

    • I missed this post earlier (thus the necro). Very well put. I completely agree with this, sometimes you pay a bit extra because you can afford and appreciate the premium aspects of a product. Life is not all about the mindless accrual of wealth, one needs to enjoy the finer things in life from time to time.
