  • anyone knows what/when is AirAsia embargo period?

    • I believe embargo period is when they have pre-sales for citibank members etc… Well at least that's what I've been told.

It is not worth flying this carrier to London, save yourself the pain. Once you factor in baggage etc just pay the extra $100-300 and fly a mainline carrier. Not to mention their shocking safety standards.

    • Who else would you recommend for value and service

    • +4

shocking safety standards? I don't think they have had any fatal accidents. Care to explain?

      • +1 none of the malaysian airlines (MAS and AA) ever had any accident..i dont think.

on a side note, AA is using 2nd aircrafts from MAS…very old.

        • +5

Fatal Accidents, no, but I have never known a carrier to come so close to an accident. AirAsia's problem is that they are entirely corrupt inside.

-Very Inexperienced Pilots. This is the main issue. They dont attract experienced crew because they pay so badly, not do Malaysian laws allow expats to fly for them. A AirAsia Captain will earn 75k whilst a First Officer (co-pilot) 45k. In comparison to Tiger Airways in Australia and Singapore where a Captain will hit 195k and a First Officer 125k. 80% of their flight crew have never worked for another carrier, they are all cadets who have been poorly trained to their dismal standards. Their CEO can be described as a conman, the corruption in Malaysia dosn't help, and I have lost count of how many people close to their CEO have payed their way into a job behind closed doors. You have got 500hr A320 Captains flying around, god Id hate to get into some tricky situations mid flight. Dont get me started on the A320-A330 progression. They have fired about 10 A330 pilots so far due to aircraft "excursions". The most recent was a pilot who obviously cuts corners which resulted in the tail ramming the terminal in India.
Here is the pic of that one:
          http://cdn-www.airliners.net/aviation-photos/middle/1/2/1/17…

Fleet maintenance is poor, their 737's are pretty badly worn, spoilers/slats are buckled everywhere (results of hard landing). God knows what happend here:
          http://leapp.aero/images/casestudy/11.Singapore_Seletar_The_…

Last year an A320 was just about a writeoff about a hard landing beyond belief in KL, the gear was replaced, crew fired. That new aircraft spent 10 months in the hanger before it flew again. The company "resolved" this by sending their entire pilot body airbus manuals of how to avoid hard landings. Both the pilots in that situation had less than 1000hrs each.

Few months ago a A320 went for a trip off the runway in Malaysia whilst landing in "heavy rain", once again the result of inexperienced flight crew.
here is the pic of that one too http://avherald.com/img/airasia_a320_9m-ahh_kuching_110110_1…

I dont know if anyone heard about this one: http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/airasia-defends-planes-…

I know they have amazing prices etc, but as someone who is in the industry, rest assured they are in no hurry to improve their standards. Fly at your own risk. When you look at stories such as QF32, its the experience in the flight deck which saves the day. I am not saying that the entire pilot body at AirAsia are all inexperienced, but the majority are. Pilots from Singapore/Tiger/Jetstar Asia refer to them as "Scare Asia".

I understand all airline have their problems and incidents here and there, but the amount of crap that goes on in this carrier, not to mention all the stuff that they cover up, its just beyond belief.

          Rant over :P

I think some are also ex Air Canada as well, 2 actually.
The rest are leased from Ansett Worldwide Aviation Services.

Dunno where the shocking safety standards comes from?

        • +2

I used AirAsia last year between KLCC and Singapore, and Air Asia X between KLCC and New Delhi. On the latter flight the A330 was basically brand new and the premium economy class seats were the most comfortable I have ever experienced. All for the cost of a normal economy class flight with a premium carrier.

It is true that domestic flights with AA use old planes, and they often fly in difficult conditions. I would have no doubts about using AAX in their new A330 planes however. They're probably far newer than what Qantas can muster.

      An extremely short-sighted view.

      1. Pilot salary doesn't equal pilot quality. If you consider the population sample that AirAsia pools its pilots from it is MORE likely that they would draw better quality people for the roles given being a pilot in Malaysia is a far more lucrative position than it is in western countries. In Australia the smartest people become doctors and lawyers - in Malaysia a lot of those doctors and lawyers try to become pilots. Of course experience is the critical factor but the issue isn't as simple as you would suggest.

      2. AirAsia isn't flying A380's.

      3. Safety records speak for themselves. AirAsia being the lowest cost carrier would be under the greatest scrutiny internationally and must adhere to the expectations of the various countries they flight to. Furthermore, AirAsia is under even greater scrutiny by the public and they know that when they have a serious incident it will be widely known and will dramatically affect sales.

Just came back from KL. Aircraft shook the whole way there and back lol.

    • Was it scary or enjoyable? Haha

      • Not scary. I never get travel sick on planes, but I did on AirasiaX.

        • +2

I might try flying with these guys in hope that i can crash and end up on the island from Lost. The turbulance you are describing could be attributed to Desmond down in the hatch failing to type in the numbers, thus the giant magnet starting to pull the plane down.

        • Watwatwat, Didn't feel the magnet but I sat next to a guy called Linus…..

        • lol spoiler alert?

        • Damn I miss that show!

    • I got back 4 weeks ago. We dropped 39 to 35. I'm scared of flying to start with and I was shitting myself we were going up and down coming in for landing we were going side to side it was terrible! Sadly turned me off AirAsia as I did get return to KL for $300.

      • +3

Dropped 39 to 35? 39,000 feet to 35,000 feet, or something else entirely? That's not a 'drop', but a controlled descent.

The choice of plane matters when dealing with turbulence. Generally, the bigger the better. Less bumpy and more comfortable. However the choice of airline of course does not matter when you're talking about turbulence during landing. Unless someone can suggest a way Qantas/Singapore Air/et al manage to control the weather when they land… Rest assured planes are engineered to deal with strong turbulence.

      • LOL turned off an airline because they had a turbulent flight…

not quite sure I get the logic there.

  • +3

I have had MANY trips on AirAsia and had NO issues whatever. Much more expensive airlines I have travelled on could take a leaf out of their book in my humble opinion.

Sure on budget airlines (and increasingly others) you pay for luggage and extras but who the heck cares when you can get tickets Melb to KL for $99 each way in a sale.

Pay full blow with Qantas and have an engine blow up ….

    • +1

When I've flown AA their planes were some of the cleanest newest planes I've ever been on . Their staff are excellent and sure you have to pay for beer , food and enterainment but it's still far far cheaper . The 3 of us flew PER to Stansted for $2100 return inclusive with extra leg room seats , food and a nights acommodation in KL . The next cheapest airline was double that . Stansted is easy to navigate and the train is very easy to catch to London .

  • Airasia is decent on sale. You purchase a bargain flight you takes the risks. This time I'm flying with jetstar to singapore then etihad to heathrow for $800. Might be a tad more expensive but I'm landing in heathrow which is closer to the city and have a bit more comfort.

  • Deal? What deal? This has turned into a rant on Air Asia. As far as the deal goes it is not bad but by no means one of their better ones - you usually need to book about 9 or 10 months ahead to get those - always assuming the entire fleet hasn't crashed and burned in the meantime.

  • NOOOOOO! - Air Asia PLEASE make your March 2012 flights as cheap! (if not as cheap at 28th Feb 2012)!!
    ON KNEEEEES

  • Yes, don't book these cheap flights with AA. They are far too dangerous to fly with. Instead book with Qantas who it seems have a major issue every week (The following all happened in the last couple of weeks - unexpected loss of altitude, engine failure, engine explosion, fire in the cockpit, fuel leak, overloaded planes, smoke in cabin, electrical faults, etc)

Having travelled to London 3 times now I can say that Air NZ >>>>>>> Air Asia >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Qantas. Air Asia actually had quite a nice plane, seemed very new. From memory for some reason it had a raiders logo on it :/

I avoid Qantas like the plague, can't understand why people like them they seem to have bad planes, average food and average service.

  • +1 for air asia,

I have flow to, and then around SE Asia twice, with AA (a total of maybe over 10 flights with them) and I was never less than impressed.

Also, good price on flights :)

  • I did fly on air asia, jetstar, tiger, singapore airlines, quantas, Silk air, virgin, pacific air. if you compare to singapore air or quantas the seats and services are bad on the low cost. But if you compare to any other its the same, almost same service, same sort of seats. So from my experaince just go with the lowest cost, as you can buy food from there for another $10, or buy beer upfront from the duty free. And saving a few hundreds is really worth. I travel to india last time for $500 with return and lagguage.
