Offer ends 31st December 2018, FYI.

Thanks OP, time to give them a trial run!

    • Cheers, added to the OP.

  • Thanks

  • Any golf channels?

  • Anyone tried side loading the android app on android tv/nvidia shield?

    • Someone made an Android TV apk on the Whirlpool thread, https://whrl.pl/RfgdwB

      I haven't tried it.

      • Installed the android tv APK on one of my mi boxes but doesn't run as good as just casting from my phone.

    • +1

It works fine on my Mecool android TV box. I downloaded the android app (ver 1.1.4) straight from Google Play. It's the phone app, so orientation is turned 90 degrees, but I fix that with the Rotate Screen Orientation app (or similar). You need an air mouse (or ordinary mouse) for full navigation functionality, but it all works great in HD.

  • -3

Also wait until the 17th of Jan so you can get the 30 day trial and have just enough days to watch the NBA All-Star Weekend ;)

    • +3

      See my comment above…

      Offer ends 31st December 2018.

    • +3

All star weekend is a massive waste of time. Should just call it TMZ weekend. It's about the only game I don't watch.

    • +4

All star game these days is just non stop 3s and alley oops, with zero defense. Most boring game to watch now.

      Thanks, Added to the OP

  • It's pretty decent for $24, compared to $70 at foxtel.
Shortcuts though is with the stream I found the motion to not be so great and theienderiniaitoj of he is 730p but apart from that cheapest way for sport right now

    • The motion issues could be due to the device you're using… Chromecast 1 and 2 are only capable of 30fps

      • Tried with their app on tv and also via web page link on pc

        • +2

the streams are 1080p at 50fps, you should get smooth video

if you are not, it could be:
          * your internet
          * your device / connection

          • @DiSTURBED-oNE: I will have another look as was not getting 1080p or 50fps at all . Internet speed is fine I'm on cable and be changed 115 mbit

          • @DiSTURBED-oNE: Very tempting service. I'm using one of the older Telstra TVs and getting odd stuttering though. It's probably too old. Things seem good through PC. Got a couple of android boxes I'll test later.

So if I'm right, live programs are all 1080i/50, while pre-recorded content is 25fps? I just watched an AFL finals game from this year and that was certainly not 50fps.

            • @Villan: It switches to 30fps when it can't provide 50fps (which I thought was 60fps).

              • @serpserpserp: Interesting. I think my problem with the Telstra TV might be a bit different, though.

I'm curious, does anyone know the refresh rate of the 4200TL - Telstra TV? And how to change it? I can't find out how to change it anywhere, and if this rebadged Roku box is locked at 60hz, then feeding it a 50hz signal might be the cause of these microstutters I'm seeing when watching the cricket.

I've tried downgrading to 720 and even further to an SD res and the stutters still exist so I don't know what else it could be besides the refresh rate of the box itself.

EDIT: Just read the Whirlpool thread. Yep, the app has a problem on this device.

                • @Villan: The 4200TL (TTV1) runs at 50Hz.

There is currently an audio sync problem on the TTV1 (was recently fixed for the TTV2).

See here for all issues with all devices:

                  https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/427849#comment-6771733

                  • @kirt: Thank you. I was just able to confirm that myself by using a different panel measuring refresh rates. Hopefully, my microstutter issue is related to the audio sync issue.

              • -1

@serpserpserp: the full raw stream is 1080p 50fps (1920x1080 @ 50fps progressive scan) but it can dynamically drop resolution and bitrate based on the speed of your connection.
if you are getting 30fps or 60fps your device is set up wrong or doesn't support 50hz output.

            • @Villan: live sport is 1080p at 50 fps, not 1080i, there is no interlaced content on Kayo.

there is some pre-recorded content that would be 25 fps, but it would be doubled to 50 fps before hitting your box, so not all content may appear to be 50 fps.
if you want to know what devices are the best to use, check the whirlpool threads, there is someone that has linked to a list with all the tested boxes and pros and cons.

I am personally waiting for the office Android TV app and Samsung Smart TV app.
Android TV one is nearly finished, the Samsung one is on their roadmap (emailed them).

    • -1

      $25.

    • +1

      compared to $70 at foxtel

It's $39 for the Sports package. You have to call and ask for it though. I prefer that over Kayo because I watch the Lifestyle channel and 4K cricket is glorious.

  • +3

Signed up and canceled straight away, got a month to test and see if I want to continue

  • But also works on older Chromecast devices at a reduced frame rate (30fps versus 60fps).

Glad I paid a bit extra and got the new Chromecast!

  • So its normally 25 for 2 streams? Meaning that 2 people can use it at the same time?

    • +1

It's 3 at the same time

      • +1

        That's 35 a month?

        • Oh crap sorry, correct. I am sharing and forgot what plan it was!

I was thinking about giving this a go until I saw the Maxwell picture above. I'm now worried that this service will promise a lot, but fail to deliver.

  • +6

Remember when The Liberal Party promised that Australians would never pay to watch sport on TV?

Just kidding, voters don't remember what the Government did last week due to brainwashing.

    • Oh I remember everything the Liberal Government has done!

      • Introduced GST on online purchases
      • Gave almost half a billion dollars to some two-bit 'environmental organisation that never asked for a cent
      • They still for some stupid reason think COAL is the way to go, and have smashed investor confidence in renewable energy
      • Spent $120 million on a plebiscite for gay marriage when the right answer was already very clear
      • Have done NOTHING for climate or energy policy because they can't even agree IN THEIR OWN PARTY what they should do
      • Changed a Prime Minister for no good reason whatsoever other than the factional minority right didn't like the guy up front, when 70% of the population approved him as PM over the other guy
      • Had to be dragged kicking and screaming for a banking royal commission, and just look what it uncovered!
      • Pushing for a $50 billion tax cut to large companies when everyone knows trickle down economics is a fallacy and the only reason they are doing it is because of the huge corporate "donations" to Liberal coffers
      • Won't look at minimising the tax benefits of negative gearing because on average Liberal politicians have many more investment properties than Labor do, so again… won't look after OUR tax coffers and prefer to look after their own wallets.
      • Lets not mention what they think of females…

The Liberal Party have accomplished NOTHING in their term in office.
Budget is looking a little better now based on increased tax revenue coming in from the mining sector… nothing to do with expenditure, which won them office ON FEAR. The national debt when they fearmongered to win office TRIPLED in their time in office. "We will be paying off Labor's debt for generations" is what we were all told.

I can't wait for the election. These morons have to go.

      • +2

If you paid any attention to the senate situation you would appreciate just how hypocritical your dribbling here is. Major parties always screw us, period. The list is endless. Fear mongering when its not you or your side ay. Way to go OT.

        • This isn't fear mongering, it's just facts.

          • @Raynes: I dont vote for major parties anymore period. But there is no credible moral high ground in whinging about things or opposing party (if one is to be that one eyed) when those you do support constantly put factional and partisan one up ship sabotaging what is good for the country. But this is the reality we live in without upper and lower house majority they do not work together fir results they work to sabotage and exploit. They are both extremely guilty of it especially since Gillard period onwards. I detest them both, guilty af, but just whinging about the current libs like this is at best wilful ignorance or worst plain deceitful. It completely ignores the reality of how they are operating which is exactly what they want so you keep voting either way… and we keep losing.

        • +1

Quality retort mate. "Nah you're wrong"

      • @UFO And if you vote for an economic, political and physical lightweight like Bill Shorten you really are a moron. If Shorten gets in and implements his 50% renewable energy plan, just wait until you see what that does to prices, not just your power bills but the flow on effect to other prices. And let’s not forget their plan to send billions more of Australian taxpayer dollars to the UN.

    • They actually said Australians wouldn’t have to pay for the major sporting events, such as the AFL/ NFL grand finals and Olympics etc.

  • Wish it had NHL

    • +1

      It does.

But NHL service is much much better. Way better than the NBA one.

      • I did look before I posted, didn't see it on the list of sports

      • +1

        I was right, found this:
Due to the ever-changing jungle that is sports streaming rights, there have been some changes to our original published list of sports on Kayo. The Diamond League (Athletics), Equestrian, National Hockey League (NHL), Indycar, European Rugby Challenge Cup, European Rugby Champions Cup and Rugby Union Guinness Pro 14 are no longer available through Kayo. (Outside of the Diamond League and Equestrian, these sports are also not available through Foxtel).

        • +1

Yep sorry. Thought I saw it. Makes sense since NHL is highly restricted. Sucks to be honest.

    • Even if they did have it, they wouldn't have had many games. Better off getting the NHL league pass direct from nhl.com from what I hear.

  • -4

It's a good service but is the standard foxtel ripoff where you're forced to pay for the full package at $25/month, even if you only have an interest in one or two sports.

    • +3

Which is why you have the option of league passes.
They also run you $200+ for each season of a specific sport, albeit you get every game rather than ones foxtel deem slot-worthy.

So far, this is the best sports option Australia has been given, since most sport has gone behind a pay wall.

      • How many people can watch and share on the same time in NBA League Pass?

    • +3

Standard foxtel ripoff is to charge you $29 for the compulsory "Entertainment package" on top of sports (another $29) and then another $10 for hd. This is much more reasonable.

      • -1

Some people are just never happy. Some spud on Reddit was complaining that this was too expensive because he's a 'uni student'. Hate to remind him but when I was a student, spending $100+ on any given night out was the norm. This is a gimme compared to that.

    • +1

It's hardly a ripoff when Foxtel forces you to buy a basic TV package before you can add on a sports package. If you don't have Foxtel already this is a game changer. And for $25 you get two screens which means you can split the costs with someone and only pay $12.50 a month.

  • Are they showing EPL on BEin channels

    • No

    • No, nor UEFA Champions League because Optus has both of those.

  • Will this work on Amazon Fire Tv Box thing?

I currently have Foxtel sports on 'hold' paying $5pm waiting for a better AFL deal before season starts but I think this will be my go to if it works well.

  • Can you cancel before the trial period finishes?

    • +3

yeh you can cancel straight away. the free period will still last until the last day

EDIT: My suggestion is to cancel straight away, or else you will forget

  • Thank you, got one for Australia vs India test match

    • +1

Seems to be a delayed coverage from what I can see.

Just realised that you have to hit the 'live' button on the app🙄

  • +1

My IPTV service gives me hundreds of sports channels on my android TV box for a fraction of the price, and no way am I going to pay a cent to the evil Murdoch empire, who have been given a monopoly by the government to steal free-to-air sport. That said, I'll trial it for free to see if I can crack their app. Power to the sports loving people, and down with greedy ideologues:)

    • Which iptv service are you using?

    • +1

Yes, but your IPTV service is also illegal.

    • Yeah could you tell me the iptv service you use?

    • My server is no longer accepting subscriptions, but head over to the reddit forums and do a search for IPTV or IPTV sports. Heaps of reviews and information there. There are also free IPTV android apps that offer hundreds of channels - mostly SD but some HD sports channels, and though not as reliable as a paid service, they are often very good, so good I'm thinking of dropping my subscription.

  • Just jumped on this anyone know if you cancel right away does it give you till the end of your free trial ?

    • -3

The answer is in this thread. It is a short thread, will take you 2 minutes to find.

      • +3

Would have taken less time to type "yes" to OP :)

        • Yeah, but sometimes it's better to teach a lesson. People frequently ask questions without bothering to read first.

  • Hmmmm, overseas and can't use my mobile number. Any ideas how to sign up before the 31st?

    • Find a mate with whom you can split the cost to sign up on your behalf…

  • Cheers, had been waiting for the android tv app, but will give this a go in the meantime.

  • looks like u need to have valid phone number and billing information before u can do the 30 day free trial?

    • Yeah, just as for all other free trials.

  • Been testing this out on my home and mobile connections since yesterday and I'm actually impressed at the service quality itself.

Picture quality is far better than anything I'm achieving on my Fetch service, and mobile streaming holds up fairly well even on a spotty train connection.

Casting to my 2nd gen Chromecast does drop it to 720p (there's a quick notification to say it's doing it to maintain the streaming experience). I suspect it's because this Chromecast can do 60fps at 720p, where the new one can do it at 1080p.

I'm not a huge sports guy, but for $25 for two streams I might keep it if it remains this consistent.

  • Watching the cricket, split screening the three test matches at the same time. Big delay between audio and video when three streams are going in HD (might be my internet since SD works okay), impressive app though I hope they rectify issues as it gets further developed. You can also stream the spider cam in parallel which is pretty cool!

  • Seems good so far. Wish there was an Android TV app. When everyone here cancels their free trial and when they ask why you are cancelling, click on the "service isn't available on my device" and it will ask which device you would like them to make Kayo available for. If we all suggest Android TV we might be able to get them to fast-track it by popular demand :)

    • The Android TV app was scheduled for release by the end of 2018, but has been pushed back to mid January 2019 AFAIK.

  • Nice deal. Just watched Formula E opening race for 2019. Good stuff.

  • I can't find any NBA games on it

edit: found it (not many though)

    • It's not like NBA league pass, you still only get whatever games espn show.

  • Cheers OP :)

    Offer ends today.

  • Did anyone else get charged $1? I was looking through my bank statements and I got a $1 charge from Kayo for signing up to the free trial.

    Edit:
Despite not disclosing the $1 charge anywhere on the free trial or t&c page, within the help section of the site it reads:
"Users will sometimes notice a small charge (e.g. $1) on their account or credit card statement during a free trial. This is just part of the pre-authorisation process to validate your card and the transaction is reversed usually within 14 days."

    • This is standard protocol for any of these services.
They run an authorisation check to verify that your card is chargeable.

      • I'm normally used to seeing the authorisation charge get reversed within a very short timeframe. It is unusual for it to still not be reversed. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and wait out their 14 days.

        • Agreed, possibly they're trying to save themselves a transaction, 14 days being the day that the standard trial period would bill for the coming paid month, they could just bill you for $24 instead of the full $25 for the first month and save themselves any costs associated with reversing the authorisation.

  • +1

    Code is still working!

    • What code ? I just get the standard 14 days
