Funnily enough I am in need of a new door opener.

I have 2 Merlin Prolift 430R's, 1 of which until recently happy accepted remote control but that's now stopped, I suspect its the antenna but pulling it apart looks like a giant drama so I'm not going to bother.

I'm wondering what it'd cost to have this new one installed though?

Out of interest is this belt driven or something else? I hear the new ones can be much quieter than the old chain driven ones I have now.

    • +1

Very simple to diy. An extra set of hands helps though

    • +7

Hey mate, depends on where you are as it can vary. Usually it's between $120-$150, however, the benefit of this motor is that if you install it yourself you'll get a 5 year warranty. There's also a video online showing how you can install the motor! Check it out here.

In regards to the operation, belt or chain drive is usually for overhead door openers. Roller door openers have drive tines that slide into the drum wheel inside the roll of your door. these engage and turn the door (Shown in the above video)

      • +1

Certainly tempting! Would this be an ideal replacement for my Merlin Prolift 430R?

We have 2, both are Merlin Prolift 430R's but the other side (which still works perfectly) must be an older model that pre-dates remote learning features, that one has the old switches instead but is otherwise labeled the same unit.

        • +3

Would be perfectly suited to replace that motor! The 430R is an older AC unit that ground away when it was opening and closing doors. The benefit over the 430R is that the Auto Opener's Roller Opener has a soft start/stop operation, which extends the life of both your door and of the motor itself. You'll find that the door itself will have more noise than the motor.

You can also reduce the noise the door makes by cleaning the tracks out with a rag and hitting it with some silicone based lubricant.

      • +1

the video is really well put together - i bought this because of how "doable" it looks in the video!

        thank you rep!

        • Happy to help! Just let me know if you need anything else - I'll be pretty active on OzBargain this week so will catch the updates.

  • +1

Do these have the extended arms (not sure exact name) that can be attached to reach inside?
I remember I had to have them to on one of my doors

    • +2

G'Day mate, they don't have extended drive arms. Sounds like you might have an older Gliderol door! There's a motor specifically designed for your requirement that also has the 20% off, found on eBay here. It has a smaller warranty but comes with the extended tines as standard.

      • +1

Yeah early 90s Gliderol door it is.
        OK thanks for the link

        • +1

Too easy! If you have any other questions just let me know.

          • @GrecDeFreckle: How do you know if you need longer arms. How far do the regular arms reach? Just bought a new house and the roller doors looks like they are 70/80s vintage. One side has a b&d motor, the other looks older and has no motor

  • +2

How much costs for the installation?

    • Hiya! Depends on where you are as it can vary. Usually, it's between $120-$150. If you let me know your location I can recommend a company for you. I also posted a YouTube video above shows how you can DIY install :)

      • +1

        Hi,

are you able to provide the installer contact. I'm based in seven hills, Sydney.

Would this installer also be able to service a roller door? re-tension the springs.

        Thanks

        • +1

Hey Impoze, one installer I know that does a fantastic job is Michael from Automated Garage Door Solutions, located in Narrellan Vale. We've been referring him for installations in Sydney for years.

You can contact him on 0439 196 608. Just let him know that National Garage has referred you onto him!

          • @GrecDeFreckle: great, thanks

            • +1

@impoze: hi, yes i would recommend Michael too. He installed my garage door about 7 months ago and he really did a fantastic job. quick, on time - no hassle at all

      • +1

Could you please recommend a installer for the western suburbs of Melbourne? Thanks.

        • Hiya Ryan, give Jenny a call from AAA Automatic Gates & Doors on (03) 9562 9511. They service across Melbourne and are located in Huntingdale - Just let them know national Garage referred you on and they'll look after you.

  • +1

How do I know which one to get? The one with the Ao6v3 vs. RM600??

    • Depends on what you're looking to do, really.

The AO6v3 has more additional options available to it, such as a battery backup or PE Safety Beams. The warranty is also longer at 5 years and has a diagnostic system hidden inside of it. In the case of a problem, we can actually plug a computer into it that would tell us exactly where the problem lies. If you have another brand of opener on site, we also have an add-on receiver you can wire into the second unit so they both run off the same remote control.

This unit is based upon an opener has been used in installations across Australia for over ten years. To date, we have not yet had a single (!) AO6v3 returned for a warranty claim.

The RM600 is designed to be able to work on the older doors that require a little extra grunt. In particular, Gliderol doors which required tines to extend the door arms into the drum of the motor. It has a shorter warranty, but is fantastic if you're looking to automate on a budget. It's a newer motor to the market but also has a great track record.

  • +3

Does it have external button switch so I can wire it with a wifi controlled switch?

    • sonoff sv?
I was thinking the same thing

    • Heya Punky, the motor has terminals that allow a push button to be wired in, as well as a range of other devices. If you were to wire in a wifi controlled switch, I imagine it would be a closed pulse loop system using the OSC / GND / PWR terminals, with OSC standing for "Open / Stop / Closed".

  • +13

+1 for what seems like a great price for a roller door motor, but also for the very knowledgeable and responsive rep.

    • +2

Yeh give him some sales ozb!

    • +2

Thanks for the feedback Dj, currently working through the wall of responses this morning :)

  • Is there any other model or this one with an extra module, I might be able to automate with Alexa or google?
    Good Price btw

    • Would love to know this too. I figure if i'm buying a motor i'd like to be able to say "hey google, open the shed door" and have it opened by the time i get there.

      • Open the pod bay doors….

    • You could prob pair it up with broaflink with rf or whatever the door uses

    • +1

I actually had this question the other day - I might need to pass some feedback onto the tech lads that make these units.

No, there is no motor I know of that would go specifically into a Google Home / Alexa Smart Home setup. The most recent innovation the garage door industry saw was the creation of smartphone kits by ATA, B&D and more recently Chamberlain Merlin. The industry is a little behind the Smart Home revolution!

I'm sure there's some way you can do it, when I was asked the question a few weeks ago I thought there might be a way you could do it with a Raspberry Pi. There's a ton of videos and guides on how you can setup a [garage door wifi controller](Raspberry Pi Garage Wifi) with one, so there must be some way you can do it. Unfortunately, that might be for someone more tech minded and less garage door minded :)

      • Yeesh, just realised I messed this link up. Let's try that again… garage door wifi controller

        • Thanks for the reply, I was referring to something like this

          https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/WiFi-Smart-Switch-Garage-Door-Co…?

I believe it needs the wall mounted switch, does this one comes with a wall switch?

          • +1

@777: Hi mate, just had a look over that listing. That wall switch they're referring to looks like an pre-existing item that comes with the unit.
TL;DR You can use that with the wiring terminals that come on this motor.

            As a longer read:
Motors used to come with wall consoles (The GRD2000 control box from Gliderol springs to mind, as well as the ancient MPC2 from B&D) which contained the circuit board for the motor. The control box used to just have a few leads to a motor inside a housing, installed inside the roll of the door. All round, just fantastically old technology.

Nowadays the motor comes with the circuit board as part of the motor, which you can wire accessories directly into. When they refer to the wall switch wiring, it's because the old units (and most American units) still have wired push buttons which are wired up at the time of install. It's actually a clever way of explaining how to install this thing!

I mentioned above that wall buttons work on a closed pulse loop system on the terminals on this motor. It looks like this functions the same way, give this line from the installation instructions: "Connect the Red & Black wires to your garage door opener: Put each end to the same terminals as the wall button wires are terminated to". I'd dare say this would wire into the Roller Openers terminal block, using the OSC / GND / PWR terminals, with OSC standing for "Open / Stop / Closed"

Thanks for the link to that item though mate, I'll be poking my team to get one in to test.

            • @GrecDeFreckle: Thank you so much for that, that makes senses, good explanation

I am not sure which type of motor I need. I need a motor for my second garage, the house is built in 1980s, roller door on a double brick. Would that be ok, if I send you some photos?

On a side note, I am looking to put an ANPR camera in my home
I am going to write a simple code, which had a small db of permitted number plates if it whitelist, the gate or garage will open.
Just need to work out on the distance to trigger the action or get a thermal sensor plate. Before anyone negs me that this is an overkill, I love doing automation as part of my work and as a hobby

              • +1

@777: Hey mate, not a problem at all! I'll pm you my email address and we'll get it sorted out for you!

I just had a chat with one of the guys here about that ANPR camera. That's a brilliant idea, we honestly had not even considered something like that. Mentioned it to one of the tech guys here and he's going to look into it. The way you wire that in would be a standard accessory configuration (Pulse Loop System) to make it work… but crikey mate, that's an interesting setup.

                • @GrecDeFreckle: Thank you, will send you a message with a photo and dimensions of my garage

I am glad someone like you thinks it is a great idea:) I have many more ideas like this
My house is a double brick inside and outside which prevents me to do lots of things as you would know, need to rely on lots of wireless products which aren't that reliable when compared to wired solutions. Don't want to chisel everything and then render and paint

  • +1

Hey rep. Could you please recommend a motor for a pull up type garage door. Thanks

    • Looking for the same

      • +2

Because I'm still fairly new to OzBargain, not entirely sure if you get a notification if I reply to a comment above yours… So check out below!

Depending on the size of your door, you'll want the Panel Opener, by Auto Openers. This motor also comes with the three keyring remote controls, as well as the sun visor holder. If you can double check for me the height and width of your garage door, I can confirm for you if this is the unit you require!

        The motor specs are below:

        Belt Drive
        Suits doors up to 16.5m²
Max door height is 2.5m (Ext available)
        Max peak pulling force: 1000N
Minimum head room: 58mm (or 60mm to be safe)
        Garage Illumination: 2x UltraBright LED's
5 Year Warranty (DIY Installation Covered)

        • Hi there, was wondering if you have a DIY install video for the sectional opener as well? The first one you linked was really good, hoping you guys made one for the sectional?

        • +1

Thanks mate. Will confirm the door size and get one. Cheers

        • Thanks rep for the detailed reply!

I'm not at home to measure it at the moment, but I would say the height should be less than 2.5m and width less than 4m.

          Would this work ?

          • @victorheaven: Hey mate, would be absolutely perfect!

This unit can work on doors up to 16.5m². Given the max height, the unit can open without an extension rail is 2.5m, that can handle doors around 6-6.5m wide. You're more than welcome to come back with some measurements if you want me to double check for you.

            • @GrecDeFreckle: Thanks mate, can you please share a video of the self install for doors with tilt mechanism please? (The video above seems to be for sectional doors)

              • @victorheaven: Hey mate, not much will change as the core concept around the installation will remain the same. We unfortunately only have sectional door installations for both motors, such as this video.

The rough outline of an installation will remain the same:

                1. Measure / mount the powerhead
                2. Measure / attach the mounting plate to the door
                3. Attach rail to mounting plate
                4. Swing rail to powerhead and fix
                5. Software setup.

Only difference is the strain that is placed upon the motor on a tilt door vs a sectional opener. The installation manual of the opener will cover some small specifics for a tilt setup.

                • @GrecDeFreckle: Would you be able to recommend an installer for postcode 2076 please?

                  • @victorheaven: Hey mate, try Michael from Automated Garage Door Solutions. He's located in Narrellan Vale but he installs in Sydney + surrounding suburbs.

You can contact him on 0439 196 608. Just let him know that National Garage has referred you onto him!

    • G'Day mate, I was actually planning on posting the motor for this application today! Depending on the size of your door, you'll want the Panel Opener, by Auto Openers. • Do you sell the Merlin Commander MyQ MT110MYQ? I'm looking for something I can monitor and control remotely from my phone offsite

    • +1

Hey mate, we don't stock that, unfortunately.

What we do have for that application is the B&D smartphone kit and the B&D Control-A-Door S. You can monitor the position of the door from work, as well as set up auto close for if you forget to close it. You will need to install PE beams to prevent accidental injury or damage for that particular function, however. There's also a log that tells you who has opened or closed the motor, which is fantastic for if it's a controlled site.

We actually put one of these onto a school's gate motor recently. The teachers were happy because they didn't need two remotes on the keyring, and the admin folks were happy because they found out the PE teacher was the one leaving the gate open :)

    • Cheers for the kind words spy!

would you have a install manual online that i could look at before purchase?

  • I have a sectional door with a chain opener.. do you offer something for that? It's pretty noisy at the moment and the light is really bad. Thanks.

    • G'Day mate, I was actually planning on posting the motor for this application today! Depending on the size of your door, you'll want the Panel Opener, by Auto Openers. This motor also comes with the three keyring remote controls, as well as the sun visor holder. The motor does have a belt drive as well, which makes the motor near silent when you're not near the garage. The opener does also have a pair of bright LED's, which should outdo your current model.

As I mentioned above, the garage door will still be the main source of the noise. If you hit the tracks with a rag and then hit them with some silicone based lubricant (NOT WD-40, it'll gum it all up) the door should reduce in noise considerably. Wouldn't hurt having the springs checked as well, if they haven't been tensioned or serviced in a while.

    Hi Rep
I have 2 garage doors. One has an old steeline opener and has a STEEL-LINE BHT1 2 button 303MHZ OR 310MHZ garage remote. The other is a manual garage door which I want to purchase this to change it to automatic. What is the frequency on this remote? Do you sell a multi frequency remote that can cater for both motors? Also do you have a contact for an installer in melbourne? Cheers

    • Heya Akma1, yikes. That's a pretty old unit!

The old BHT1 remotes were made with Boss (Steel-Line) motors around 15+ years ago and are no longer made by the manufacturer. There's a ton of compatible remotes on eBay for them (which we used to stock) but we found they're pretty poor quality (which is why we no longer stock them). Unfortunately, there is no 'Dual Frequency" remote for crossing brands. What we do have, however, is an add-on receiver!

An add-on receiver would wire into the Steel-Line unit and allow a new series of remote controls to control the motor. In this case, we'd wire in a CRX1AO receiver so the motor would be able to talk to the new AOTX5 remote controls. We don't have an eBay listing for the CRX1AO receiver just yet, but give me 5 minutes and we'll have one.

      • Thanks mate! Can you recommend an installer for Melbourne CBD / west area? Cheers

        • Hiya akma1, give Jenny a call from AAA Automatic Gates & Doors on (03) 9562 9511. They service across Melbourne and are located in Huntingdale - Just let them know national Garage referred you on and they'll look after you.

  • Hey mate.
Do you have an installer in Albury/Wodonga? It is an investment property and I don't live nearby, is it possible to get the opener sent to the installer?

    Thanks

    • +1

Hey Wheels, we're actually based in Albury/Wodonga!

Give Twin City Roller Doors a call - They're my (full disclosure, I work directly above the building they're in) choice for an installer in Albury Wodonga. We'd be able to have the motor on hand for them to take to the site and install. Give Michelle a call on 6040 8666 and she'll be able to help!

  • +2

Can you recommend installer for SE Melbourne? And which model is more suitable for a heavier zinc B&D roller door circa 1970?

    • +1

G'Day Genus, 24/7 Garage Door Services install in your area. You can grab Paula on 0439 563 233, or the phone will divert to Asher if she's busy :)
Just let her know National Garage has sent you on and they'll look after you!

As for the opener, I'd go for the Roller Opener. We've been using them on the heavier doors in our area with great results! As it's an older door I'd definitely make sure it's installed by a garage door outfit as they'll probably want to service the door. The springs might have lost tension, which causes the gears inside the motor much faster than normal.

If you get your door serviced every 12-24 months you'll extend the life of any garage door opener considerably, similar to servicing a car.

  • Do you have a version that is more compact without the bit that juts down i.e. like this merlin one: https://www.gomerlin.com.au/product/weatherdrive-2/

    • Yep! Check out the GDO8 unit by ATA. It's also a weatherproof motor, but the trade-off of the compactness of both the WeatherDrive and the GDO8 is that they're pretty gutless with not much lifting power when compared to the normal residential door openers.

Have you got a limited sideroom, or is something in the way there?

  • Would this work with a garage shed with a spring lift door

    • Hey mate, how high / wide is the garage door? To just confirm as well, are we talking about a spring balanced roller door or a sectional / tilt door?

      • i would say its a spring balanced tilt door. its more like a shed than a garage.

  • Rep, it appears a few folks above are asking for a 'tilt' mechanism door opener.

    I'm also looking for one.

    Can you please recommend?

    TIA

    • G'Day mate, I was actually planning on posting the motor for this application today! Depending on the size of your door, you'll want the Panel Opener, by Auto Openers. This motor also comes with the three keyring remote controls, as well as the sun visor holder. It'll be able to handle the heavier tilt door pretty easily thanks to the 1000N drive.

      The motor specs are below:

      Belt Drive
      Suits doors up to 16.5m²
Max door height is 2.5m (Ext available)
      Max peak pulling force: 1000N
Minimum head room: 58mm (or 60mm to be safe)
      Garage Illumination: 2x UltraBright LED's
5 Year Warranty (DIY Installation Covered)

  • Hi GrecDeFreckle,

Can you please tell me the difference between a sectional and panel opener that you've linked above?

    $349 Garage Panel Door: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/302931944044
    $279 Sectional Opener: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/302053292516

I'm trying to work out the best one for my garage.

EDIT: These are pics of the garage and existing opener: https://imgur.com/a/2mSYxRi

    • +1

      Hey SavageCarrot,

As I discussed above with the Roller Opener vs the RM600 it comes completely down to what you want to do. Both have the same force (1000N), both have a belt drive and both have LED lighting. Where the differences lie is with the additional accessories and the warranty periods on the two units.

The Panel Openers can use a battery backup & PE Safety Beams. The warranty is also longer at 5 years and has a diagnostic system hidden inside of it. In the case of a problem, we can actually plug a computer into it that would tell us exactly where the problem lies (as can other installers with this specific tool). If you have another brand of the opener on site, we also have an add-on receiver you can wire into the second unit so they both run off the same AOTX5 remote control. We don't have the receiver on eBay just yet, but we're putting that up today.

The Sectional Opener can handle doors that are a smidge larger (18m² compared to the Panel Openers 16m²) and has a shorter warranty period of 5 years. It's great for automation on a budget, (and with this sale on it's an absolute STEAL at $223) but it just doesn't have the same options as the Panel Opener.

If you're wanting a recommendation, I'm building a house next year and plan to have the Panel Opener on the door - Take that as you will :)

Looks like an old GDO2, made by ATA. Common versions were teh GDO-2, 2v5 and 2v7. I actually replaced a GDO2 with a Panel Opener myself quite recently - The mounting hardware does need to be replaced but you can sneak in the powerhead into the same mount holes. The Panel Opener is a little narrower compared to the GDO2, but it saves you from having to re-drill the holes.

The door itself doesn't look out of the ordinary either, so it should be a pretty simple install!

Thanks mate, is the panel opener the same install process as the sectional opener install video that you linked above?

The sectional opener looks a bit smaller, but I assume the install process is much the same?

If you've got a video link to the panel opener that'd be great, or if it's the same as sectional, no dramas :-)

Much of the same to be honest. The steps don't really change too much from model to brand, what causes variations are the job sites themselves. For example, a beam across the middle of the garage roof might mean we suspend the motor using perforated angle, or a lack of room for a motor entirely (boats and 4WD's with lift kits are the usual suspects) means we go for a side mounted jackshaft opener.

Here's a video we prepared earlier!

          • @GrecDeFreckle: Thanks mate, and last question before I pull the trigger. Does it have a O/S/C terminal. I automate my current ATA with a GoGoGate2 where I just run a couple of wires from the GoGoGate to the OSC terminal.

Does the panel opener have the OSC terminal?

@R1ngSt1nger: Hey mate, no worries at all: I'll do you one better.

We actually have a Panel Opener installed in our showroom, so I've taken a photo of it for you. There are two screws (Phillips head) at the top of the panel opener's courtesy light cover that you need to remove. once you've done that you get access to the control board.

The green block on the top right is the wiring terminal, with the OSC the second from the bottom. I've resized the photo so it doesn't destroy any mobiles, but the terminals read (From the top) SB1, 0v, SB2, 0v, OSC, AUX. The yellow wire down the bottom is the antenna, with the two white "H" objects on either side of the board the LED arrays.

              • @GrecDeFreckle: Thanks mate, I count 7 terminals/holes on the green block. I assume OSC has two terminals/holes?

EDIT: Oh I just enlarged it, OSC is just one terminal, how does that work? I thought it would need two wires to make it work?

@R1ngSt1nger: Hey mate, I just questioned a tech about that as well. He believes it's a spare as the model it's based upon only utilized 6 terminals. I'll double check what the exact wiring is for you and get back to you.

Edit: Sorted it out. I've got a more in-depth explanation here.

V+ (our non-labelled terminal for some reason) is positive
SB1 is for accessory 1 - Or in this instance, GoGogate2
0v is the ground for SB1
SB2 would be for a second accessory (Receiver, push button, alarm etc)
                  0v the related ground
                  OSC for creating the loop
                  AUX for an antenna!

                  • @GrecDeFreckle: Thank you very much mate, so it sounds like I would need to wire it up to SB1 and OSC?

                    • +1

@R1ngSt1nger: Exactly! If your GoGoGate2 is earthed as well, you could just use one of the 0v terminals.

                      • @GrecDeFreckle: Thanks so much for all your help, just purchased a panel opener from you, much appreciated.

One final question if I may… does the panel opener come with the ceiling mount bracket? I’ve already got one on my existing one but not sure if it’ll be compatible.

In any case I’m sure I’ll work it out :-)

                        • @R1ngSt1nger: Hey mate, not a problem at all! Happy to help :)

The mounting bracket is 100% included! It comes with every required for installation - So if you had a brand new home with a door that was operating by hand, all you need to install is going to be in the box!
