                          • @GrecDeFreckle: Hey Greg, just to let you know, the panel opener didn't come with the required mounting brackets for the ceiling. It doesn't matter as I just re-used my old one, but just in case future customer's asked.
The manual even says 'not included'.

Apart from that, it all works perfectly, just installed it today! Thanks for all your help.

                            • @R1ngSt1nger: Hey mate, thanks for the feedback! When I'm back in the office I'll check that out, that's something I obviously need to brush up on.

However, great to hear you're all set! Have a safe & merry christmas period mate :)

Thanks, I was procrastinating about roller door openers, have now ordered one and can now move on to procrastinate over something else.

      I don't procrastinate, I always finish what I'm

  • Hey GrecDeFreckle, if I purchase 2 of these motors will they both use the same frequency? I would actually prefer to have each door operate separately. Thanks

    • Hey mate, the remote controls have four different buttons. So you can assign a door to their own button to avoid one button opening all doors.

  • Hey GrecDeFreckle,

I have an old ATA GDO 4v3 and it mostly works fine but sticks a lot after rain. The door guides are attached to wood planks and they may be expanding after rain. I reckon the GDO 4v3 lacking a bit of power to push/pull the door after the wood expands and pushes the guides inwards slightly. The manual states it is 250N and the model you are selling is much more powerful at 600N. Do you think replacing my old opener will fix my problem or am I better off spending money to get someone to fix the door?

    Thanks.

    • +1

If the tracks are being pushed in from swollen wood, most motors are going to struggle to push past friction. The ideal door guides do exactly that, guide.

This motor will have the power to replace that unit, however, I'd consider looking at getting a local company to come out and quote you on either replacing the wood with steel, or exploring the possibility of a brick pillar for the guides to be mounted on. Wood's an ok solution until it gets older.

In the meantime, maybe have a look at waterproofing the wood for a temporary solution. There's a few sprays about that do that, but there are a few methods you can do with oil according to google. Again, definitely not a long-term solution, but over the Christmas break (if we get torrential rains again) it could help a little.

  • Hello GrecDeFreckle,

We burnt out a Merlin 950 pulling up a B&D Firmadoor R2F 5.5W x 4.8H - are you selling anything that could lift that size of door please?

    • +1

G'Day mate, the 950 would have burnt out on that! That door weighs in at about 26.4m², which is more than the rated 25m² it can handle. Putting motors on doors that juuust meets the guidelines is usually a risky business, as it's always better to over-engineer a solution rather than under-engineer.

There are two options out on the market at the moment for you:

The ATA GDO10, rated to 28m² found here
The Grifco LR-Drive, rated to 28m² as well (or 22m² if your door is also wind locked). You can find that one here

The GDO10v3's have been our light commercial motor of choice for years due to the included up/down/stop console, as well as the inbuilt battery backup. It also has that inbuilt diagnostic system that the Roller Opener has, so if there was ever an issue with the door there's a tool we can plug into it. Super garage-door-nerd-stuff, but definitely cuts the time down when diagnosing a problem.
As you might have noticed, however, the GDO10 is currently out of stock. ATA (the manufacturer) has run out of stock again, which means we may not have them until the new year.

Which brings us to the next contender, the Grifco LR-Drive. It actually replaces the MRC950EVO with more power and performance and also includes an inbuilt battery backup as well. It's brand new to the market (scheduled for December release but released early November IIRC) but is simpler to install. With the GDO10 you need to run CAT-5 cable up to the powerhead, whereas the LR Drive simply comes with a wireless wall button and two remote controls. We are also in stock of the LR-Drives.

I still recommend the GDO10's simply due to the history we have with them - They're a tried and true motor that we know is reliable. Unfortunately, we probably won't have any until mid January. Let me know if you have any questions!

      • Thanks for the considered reply. The door is wind locked. Would that change any of your recommendations?

      • I scoured your ebay site and it seems you have recommended the two strongest motors you have, without going to multiple motors. The door is wind locked so the Grifco won't cut it, and the ATA is out of stock (and might not cut it either?). Any other options because we would like to take advantage of the PINEAPPLE offer…

        • Hey mate, it wouldn't cut it either. If you had a company put that motor on I'd be having a pretty stern chat to them as to why they put that motor on it, because they should know better.

If your door is wind locked, neither motors will suit - As you can see the Grifco drops 6m² of rating immediately when the door is windlocked, just due to the extra resistance that is created. You'll probably need to look at ATA's Axess Pro series of motors, as your door isn't a 'light commercial / oversized residential' door and now more of a 'commercial' door.

This is something we, unfortunately, can't get happening on the PINEAPPLE code, as the heavier duty commercial openers are a special order gig. If your door had a MRC950EVO it's going to have single phase power (240V plugin) and we won't need top of the line to get it automated. Check out this brochure here for a read on the Axess Pro 3100. If you have any questions just let me know mate, or PM me for direct contact details :)

  • hey GrecDeFreckle, hope you're still about
    for this one: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/302931944044
does it have a soft closing mechanism, or is quiet in general? My current motor (centurion sdo-10) is on its way out and looking to replace ASAP before it explodes. It dumps the door down in the last 20cm which sets my dogs off every time!

    • +1

      Still floating around!

Definitely has the soft start / stop operation and the motor does have a belt drive as well, which makes the motor near silent when you're not near the garage.

With this motor, the garage door will still be the main source of the noise. If you clean the tracks with a rag and then hit them with some silicone based lubricant (NOT WD-40, it'll gum it all up) the door should reduce in noise considerably. Wouldn't hurt having the springs checked as well, if they haven't been tensioned or serviced in a while.

  • hi GrecDeFreckle,

How do i know if I require extended arms for the opener? I have an Gliderol door 2.2mx2.5m with the original Gliderol opener (motor in the drum, controller on the wall). Its about 10cm from the drum wheel spoke to the u-bolt.

Also can you recommend a service technician for Brisbane southside ? (QLD 4113 Eight mile plains)

    Thank you!

    • Hey Ash!

If you have a gliderol door in the drum, chances are pretty darn high you'll need the RM600, The motors in the drum sit further in the roll of the door than traditional models. Where your motor currently sits is pretty much where traditional roller drums are.

As for an installer, give Dean from Elite Garage Repairs a call, he'll be able to get you sorted! His number is 0437 797 745, just let him know that National Garage has referred you on and he'll look after you :)

  • Hey GrecDeFreckle!

I'm not sure which one to purchase as I don't know if the tines are required or not for my particular door - Ao6v3 or RM600.

Very limited information, but all I know is I have a roller door by firmadoor which is about 2.5m wide and about 2.5m in height.

    Cheers!

    • Hey mate! Sounds like you need a Roller Opener, as the Firmadoor is a B&D brand :)

      • Thanks for the reply! would the one in the OP be suitable for the job?

        • Certainly would be! Here's a link direct to the product :)

  • Hi guys,

I was quoted $180 by an installer OP recommended, of which $60 is for balancing. Anyone knows what this is an if it is necessary? I think my door is already balanced.

    • Hi mate! Bit of a belated reply but I'm back from my Christmas break. TL;DR - Similar to getting your car serviced, definitely do it.

Balancing is a pretty important part of all door installations. Most door manufacturers recommend that you get your door balanced every 12 months, but you can stretch it out to every 24 months. It's like servicing a car, whilst it might not seem like it needs it at the time, you'll notice when it goes pear-shaped (or in this case, when the springs snap in half on the door).

Balancing takes a lot of the weight of the door away from the motor itself, and reduces the lifting weight to under 25kg's. When you go higher a lot of weight is placed upon the internal gearing of the motor. Most manufacturer warranties require the door to be serviced so the door is in perfect condition to reduce wear and tear on the unit. We can also tell pretty quickly when inspecting a failed motor if it's been caused by the door, usually by the pattern of stress cracking over the internal gears.

I'd definitely recommend it for a new installation of a motor, as the door slacks a lot when not automated (just because you can lift it by hand doesn't mean a motor can).

hi all, if anyone is in Adelaide and wants this for a discounted price - please let me know
I bought it without properly checking the clearance requirements, and sadly I haven't got the room to install the unit.
I thought it might be best posting it here first before gumtree or facebook.
It's still new in the box, haven't even taken it out of the postage cardboard box.
    Please let me know.

    • Is this still available?

      • I was able to return it via eBay - sorry mate

      • The deals back on if you missed out last time! Same link as well :)

  • Hi @GrecDeFreckle, would these be a suitable replacement for a B&D Controll-A-Door MPC? Says "MPC 1" where the light is on the opener itself, and "MPC 3 Heavy Duty" on the controller. If this won't suit can you recommend something that will?

    • Hey mate, would definitely suit the MPC motor. Would strongly recommend having this professionally installed, however, as the MPC units are over 20 years old and were an older Ac unit. The newer DC units are a lot quieter, but the tradeoff is that they need the door to be cleaned up a little before operating. Check out the write up I did above on servicing the door for more info.

      • Thanks mate, appreciate the reply!

        • No worries, happy to help!
