Telstra is offering free data to existing customers. I had it applied on all of my accounts (2 services, 1 data share sim) and it was on top of the last 5gb data bonus. The data share sim just keeps giving.

  • Worked for me (and my wife, same account). I am on the $39 plan for 30gb that was recently advertised. Now it is $39 for 35gb Woohoo, thanks Op!

    No ready to do another 12 months with them, so opted not to get it.

    Had two live chats open.
    1st rep: Rejected due to being on F&F plan
    2nd rep: Added the extra 5gb no questions asked

    Email about the additional data came through 2 mins later

  • I was insistent on chat and had it applied as a 'good will gesture'. I advised that my friend had it added this morning without upgrading. Took a long time (probably thirty minutes including wait time) but worth it imho.

  • Just got on chat to ask for this offer and ended up with the $59 plan for $49 inc 60GB of data x 2 SIMs. I also have 3 data share SIMs. Was on 35GB across all 5 SIMs, now 120GB without spending an extra cent. Nice.

  • Can someone confirm if they have been successful in getting the 5gb added to a $5 data share Sim? I was successful in getting the 5gb christmas bonus added to my old datashare $40 expired contract last week, but they refused to add it to my $5 datashare Sim or $45 JB hi-fi contract.

    Off topic, but can anyone confirm if Telstra will waive ETC to re-contract a current JB hi-fi plan to a Telstra plan?

  • Worked for me just then. I started with 15GB on the recent $54p/m Family and Friends plan, then got another 5GB added 2 weeks ago, then another 5GB just then. Thank you OP and Ozbargain!

    Me: I don't think that is the case, I have a couple of friends who did not have to recontract to get it

    They added 5GB to my phone plan but said the system would not allow them to add 5GB to my $5 data share sim, they could only add 3GB.
    I’m happy with a free extra 8gb.

    I now pay $55 per month for 23.1GB shares between the two sims.

  • Worked for me, just recontracted to the $39, 30GB BYO plan and got an extra 5GB added. (35GB all up)

    I just re-contracted my 1 week old $45 Jb hifi plan to the $39 BYO with 35gb data and POM (and can confirm my own query that they don't charge the ETC). I also got the additional 5gb added to my expired MX data-share contract (after getting another 5gb added last week) but they refused to give me any additional data on the data-share sim, I suppose I can't complain about that…

  • So I’ve just spoken with 5 separate consultants and none of them will add the data. All of them have said “for recontracting customers only” and all proceeded to sell me stuff. Any way around this?

    • Dunno but I definitely didn't recontract. I'm only eleven months into my two year contract and since there's no more data sharing between SIMs, definitely not interested in recontracting

        • I just kept mentioning Christmas Data Bonus and Cody got annoyed and transferred me to a real person haha (I think I picked Other)

    • Say speak to chat consultant to Cody and if that doesn't work, disconnections always does the trick….

      When I spoke to a person they said recontracting only but I rebutted with "My mate got the same thing earlier today without recontracting" and that did the trick!

        I currently have an old mobile plan with a data share sim as well.
        She got managers approval to add the 5gb just to the mobile, not the data share sim she said she wasn't allowed. but hey, something is better than nothing!

  • Stinking Telstra. I tried and got denied. Apparently my 6 month old BYO plan is too old and I need to upgrade to a new plan and lose my data sharing before I'm eligible.

    Told the guy I wasn't happy about that and he just got angry with me.

    I hate Telstra so much but the other providers are sooo rubbish…

    • Tried again. Pushed the point. Told them my friends were given it. Tried the long time customer line. Nothing worked.

      • I did the same thing and had no luck and was told that the bonus was already on my account (JB $45 plan) so I followed @rowan’s advice and recontracted that plan to the $39 plan with 30GB+5GB data and POM add-on with no early termination fees.

        • Yeah I nearly did that too, but I lose my data sharing between my phone and tablet of I do that, so it didn't make sense at the moment for me.

    • Attempt 3. No go. The bonus data is only for recontracting customers. I asked if she could ask the manager. Nope.

    • Attempt 4. No go. They advised me to talk to the "specialised billing Dept" over the phone.

      • Just kept pushing for it. It helped that every rep I spoke to said they'd apply the data, but didn't. So I told the 4th rep that I'd be lied to multiple times, and it worked. Received confirmation via text 5 minutes later.

        Just keep trying. Why not try the disconnects team? Select Mobile on a Plan > Disconnection

  • I finally got this sorted yesterday afternoon after speaking to 4 different people via live chat. I didn't manage to get peace of mind data even though I literally explained that somebody could go get a two dollar Sim to get the benefit but they won't give it to somebody that's been with them for 15 years. I can go to another company but I don't think I'm gonna get a better deal so I got the $39 30GB plus after a lot of back-and-forth I got the 5 GB Christmas bonus.

  • First Live Chat agent said I had to recontract, I spoke to another who said they'll speak to their manager and it got approved. Perhaps try another agent if it doesn't work and mention you're a loyal customer ;)

    As they say, 5th time's a charm. I got onto chat with Manmeet (that's his name, I shit you not. The Indian ladies must love him) and after lots of tooing a froing and me saying how much I loved Manmeet he finally added the data.

  • Thanks OP, got the 5gb added easily on first live chat. I asked how long it takes to be applied and they said in the next hour or two.

    So I went to bed and lo and behold in the morning there was no change. No email and no SMS confirming it. So I jumped back on live chat and enquired.

    They said they are not supposed to apply it as it's for recontracting customers only. But because the previous live chat promised it to me, they will honour.

    So now I have 55gb, as I joined the jb hifi deal for 50gb / $45/mth 👍

    Rep did try and recontract me to the black Friday deal but added after I advised was waiting for S10 release.
    On the old Go Mobile Plus $49 BYO plan with $20 VCB credit and now with 15GB.

  • Upvoting this deal because it worked on 1st attempt; funny how I need to initiate chat to get this bonus; very odd way in getting things … which i feel unfair for the others that don't know chat need to be initiated.

  • I just got a free sim $2 sim from Telstra right, haven't activated it yet tho, would they apply it to that account after I activate the sim?

    I do not plan on using the sim as of right now since I am currently on contract with Optus, how long does the 5gb last?

  • Still available, even though I had to work at it and remind the operator that there's other telcos out there. Managed to get an extra 4GB each on two out of contract BYO mobile plans.

  • I have been trying with a prepaid account (grandfathered), and they keep saying that I received a 25gig bonus so I cannot get this. :(
    Plus they keep trying to get me to another prepaid offer which I don't want. Any tips?

    I've tried a few times now and have had no success they keep trying to take the $20 discount off
