      • IIRC you can just spend the $3k on the Visa and get 90k points.

  • Anyone know when this deal will expire?

    • According to https://www.stgeorge.com.au/personal/credit-cards/affiliate/…

$0 annual card fee promotion: Available when you apply for a new Amplify Signature Qantas Rewards credit card between 20th November 2018 and 23 January 2019 and make your first purchase within 12 months of card approval. The first annual card fee debited on the 12 months anniversary of the first transaction on your account and annually thereafter.

      • Cheers mate. Will probably wait until January then. Just got my Westpac ones approved.

        • No worries - note there's no guarantees and they can change at anytime I'm sure

          • @isthisreallife22: Yeah. I can see this is a popular deal. Almost 200 likes in 3 hours since posted. Do you know of any similar deals that were taken down before the expiry date? May have to jump on this one early just in case.

  • I am trying to look at the features.

    https://www.stgeorge.com.au/personal/credit-cards/frequent-f…

Does this card even have a 44 or 55 day interest free period?

  • I can never find enough ways to spend the minimum spend in 3 months - what are you all buying?

  • +3

I applied for it two weeks, got the card and called them now to waive the 179 annual fee which they did.
Great card for free 80k points.

    • So you just called up St George and they waived it ? I got approved for the $179 deal 2 days ago…

    • I wish I was as lucky, I should call again!

      • I just called and no luck, they said I would need to withdraw and re-apply

        • Same here. That would void the eligibility for the bonus point though

          • +1

@victorheaven: Fill in the complaint form on their website. It goes to a totally different team to the phone line.

I've had great responses from this team, including fees waived in the circumstances above. This is after being refused in branch and on the phones.

            • +1

              @rankmanugly: Thanks mate.

I have actually managed to speak to someone, who has asked me to call back once I am charged with the annual fee and they will reverse the charges for me. :)

  • Any blogs/articles about tips on manufactured spending in Australia ?

  • So can I do my purchases in the 1st 3 months and then cancel the card? and still get the Qantas points?

    • Yes.

      • thanks

        • Make sure you wait for the points before you cancel

          • @Takeonme: Suggest you hold it until your birthday month as you get a 10% bonus on points earned!

            • @netjock: Birthday is next month, so good to go.

    • Wait you get your qantas points before canceling though

  • I've been a credit card virgin all my life, but decided to bite the bullet.

I used the 'Automatically work out my limit' option, it gave me a $50k limit! Thanks, but no thanks! I'm assuming this will be easy enough lowering the limit once the card is approved?

As I'm a novice, anything stopping me from buying a new car, then paying the full amount off with 55 days? I get that's the idea, but whether there was a 'maximum transfer' or such to gain additional fees?

    Thanks OP.

    • You made your first mistake by volunteering to allow you to give you a massive card limit and inhibit your ability to get future cards.

      • Is 15k a large limit? I got it automatically ok my AMEX when they cancelled my platinum amex from the Visa/amex cpmbo and told me to reapply and that's what I was given. Does 15k reduce my chances of getting a new card to church QFF points?

    • +1

Just call and lower the limit, other banks ive done this with have processed it in minutes. I guess just make sure they dont put you onto a lesser product without these benefits (i.e. make sure they dont cancel this card and put you onto their budget offering)

    • +1

You should be able to amend the limit on the online banking when you get the card through and activated. Only ever take the minimum needed limit (in this case $15K), your total limit across all cards are addressed when/if you choose to apply for anything else (credit card, car loan, home loan etc).

      • Thanks for the info. I'm not one to swap accounts often, and already have a home loan so I shouldn't be affected too much.

I was thinking more if the CC was stolen / online bank accounts saved somewhere they shouldn't be, then hacked, or if there was some hidden maximum transfer amounts.

Thanks again, I'll look at changing the limit providing everything is approved.

  • +1

Great deal! I pay my rent via these credit cards and always easily meet the minimums. Up to 300k points in 12 months from all the bonus offers lately. Spend the minimum, wait for points, close the card, onto the next.

    • +1

Time to book that round the world business ticket ;)

      • Dam right : D

    • What do you use to pay your rent? The options that I saw had a fee so I am not sure if it's worth it.

      • I pay through DEFTrent. It wont allow you to pay through online banking or the banks' apps so i go directly to the site. Your agent needs to be setup with it but most are.

        https://www.deft.com.au

    • How are you able to pay your rent via credit cards. I need to learn from you, Master.

      • Speak to your real estate agent about possible rent payments through the DEFT system, link above.

        • My agent only ever gave me an option to set up a regular bank transfer. I assumed this was normal.

          • @chriise: Worth asking for another option, but generally bank transfer is the normal way. Good luck

  • I owe about 8k on my current card. Does this card have an interest free period on balance transfers?

    • During application it asks if you want to do a balance transfer, but I'm not sure what the benefits it offers are

  • Does anyone else have trouble when applying for st George cards?

I have an old fee free bank account with them that just collects dividends from shares. It's only got a few thousand in it. My income is well above what is required and I have minimal debts and only a couple of cards with small limits.

Yet I have never been approved for a st George card. Every other bank has been fine

    • Yeh St George is the only card that I have ever been rejected from despite sound financial standing well and above requirements, great credit scores across all the three providers.
When I called to ask st George for a reason, girl on phone was puzzled too and said something must triggered the algorithm for auto rejection.

      • It's possibly the way they've calculated your net monthly position (spare cash). Each bank may treat assumptions differently, for example the expected cost of living for each additional dependent you have.

      • When you called, were St George able to reverse the algorithm and approve it? Or still unable to get the card?

        • I am in the same situation… Applied earlier this year and got rejected… applied again and got rejected… I don't get it… I have no dependents…

Last time I called and they just told me to apply again in 6 months… and now I got rejected again…

        • Well the girl on the he phone had no idea as to why I might have been rejected.

          So not much help there

          • @phynicle: I am in the exactly same situation. I got declined from the system right after I made an application.
Thus, I made a call this morning to the customer service and asked about it.
The guy suspected that it seems due to the short period of staying in Australia (which is less than a year) but he didn't give any clear answer.
I wonder whether anyone resolved this issue wisely.

    • +1

Yes, apparently I do! I've never been declined before for a credit card. This was my first St George application ever. Approved; with activation code & card sent in mail. Unable to activate as apparently mistakenly approved; with nil explanation provided as to what happened. Going through complaint process now…

  • +1

Any idea how strict they are on income requirement, and if they assess on two jobs? Combined I am close but still a little under.

    • the application form allows you to enter multiple income sources

  • Do the banks include bonuses in the total salary consideration for the $75k requirement?

    • they do for home loans if you can demonstrate it is consistent/guaranteed - e.g. proof you've received it for the past few years

  • -1

Note that Westpac has a recent significant points devaluation (retropectively applied to all previously earned points!) & I suspect St George will follow suit in the near future.

    • +9

Qantas points are Qantas points Gazza

      • AAah - good point. I was confusing this with the other Amplify card.

  • Hmm what's the best card if your income is around 60k?

    • Look out for "Platinum" card deals

  • FYI - if you had an old account and change addresses in the meantime, it seems to cause all kinds of trouble with the application. Took me 30 minutes on the phone to sort out (we basically did the entire thing again over the phone). She noticed it came in via an affiliate so seems like I'll still get the promo.

  • Damn I applied for this a couple weeks ago and got approved. Still yet to recieve the card though, going to call them to ask if they can waive the fee.

    • I tried and they refused

  • Ah man, I just got same card the other day (with $179 annual fee).
Was an annoying process to sign up too, ended up having to send the same set of documents three times!!! Got there in the end tho.

Going to try calling tomorrow to see if they will do annual fee waive .. hope so!

    • Just called - not successful.
      They say it's through a 3rd party.
I thought I could cancel and re-apply but that's not the case.

    • Dont activate (otherwise your 12 month wait will start) then just Re apply.Might trigger another credit check…But who cares.

  • Only issue with this card is they take the full 3 months to credit you the bonus points and their customer service team has no idea about their current promotions. At least with Amex you get the points in the first billing cycle. If you don’t need the points straight away this is a great deal.

    • Amex is supposed to give points early and automatically, though the Amex Westpac Altitude one I got recently didn't do that after 4 months, so I had to chase the points by contacting them. Same with my wife's Amex. Hope that's not a common occurrence.

  • -1

Do Qantas points ever expire? Got to decide where to move my Amex points to before the change next year and maybe this card gives me an in.

    • +2

Took about 2 seconds to google it

    • From my understanding, if your QFF account is inactive for 18 months then the points will expire. As long as there is some form of activity on your QFF account, the points won't expire. Someone can care to correct if they wish.

      • Would acquiring new points count as activity?

        • Yes it does. QFF T&C states that as long as you accumulate one point or points on account, it counts as active. Best to keep accumulating points though cause they may change in an instant. It was on the news somewhere that someone lost 500,000+ points because he was inactive for the period stated due to ill health.

  • Credit card noob here. So as I understand it, 80k points is worth around $800 dollarydos. This makes it around 20% off for the first $4k?

And that happens if you don't meet the spending requirement?

    • If you don't meet the spending requirement you don't get the points

  • This or ANZ Frequent Flyer Black with 120k qantas point with $275 fee for first year??

    • This.

      • +2

Extra 40K qantas point equals $440 at 1.1c per qantas point, and also it has better earn rate 1 point vs 0.75 per $ spend

    • +2

This or and ANZ Frequent Flyer Black with 75k qantas point with no fee for first year

      • Has the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black deal you have linked now expired? I could not find where there is no fee for the first year.

        • Appears to be the case now sorry, only $200 off via online account.

  • Is anyone having trouble adding their DOB in the applications?

    • +6

No… But I was born in the last 118 years

    • I can't even fill on my surname. Won't let me fill in the full version.

      • I was using chrome originally. then tried safari and it worked for me.

        • Tried, Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Only have windows, so can't use Safari. My surname is a double surname, 8 letters in the first and 9 in the 2nd. I can only get to the 6 letter on the 2nd part.

  • +2

Called to cancel my Amex westpac altitude black card so I don't have so many collected, ready for this one. They offered 30,000 points to not cancel…so I took that.. Now I have way too many cards

    • Wow 30,000 points. That's unheard of with Westpac.

      • This is the amex half of the 2 card combo so it would be amex handling that part

        • So that means you can still sign up for the Amex issued cards and still get the sign on bonus?

          • @nightelves: If you have an amex card, you can also get a bank issued amex card and get bonuses. E.g. Have a amex platinum charge and sign up for an amex altitude westpac black. If that is what you mean

          • @nightelves: Yes. What number did you call…I might "cancel "

            • @tunzafun001: wrong person

            • @tunzafun001: I called my Amex Platinum Line on 1800673760. I'm sure any amex card services line would be able to "cancel"

              • @Tech5: What was the agreement in return for the 30k points? Can you just call again to cancel once those points drop in your account next month?

                • @chriise: I confirmed with the guy and he just said the only condition is you do not cancel right now. Points will be in your account within 2-3 days. I'm guessing at the end of the months statement and the points are transferred to qantas, there is nothing they can do about it anyway
