@Bills22: The benefit of egift cards is you usually can buy at 5% off

So for arguments sake, if you did buy $4000 worth that would net you $4210 of gift cards.

Not promoting buying that many gift cards that's too much risk for me

The other good option is the eBay Woolworths gift card deals that sometimes popup for even more benefit while earning you good spend on your point earning card e.g. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/379379

They can't be used in store though to research well prior to purchase

            • @isthisreallife22: No way… $4000 worth of giftcards is a lot to ask for. Though my suggestion should've been if you have any amount left over and one is running out of time….then do it via that. I usually visit Coles and Woolies for giftcards for Amex (3 points for $1 spend for big purchases)

In addition, if one has access to Rewardgateway portal via Employer, works out even better in some cases…5-10% off egiftcards with some not expiring for 100 years.

              • +2

@Bills22: I think we are in total agreement :)

Btw cashrewards Woolworths e-gift cards can be bought using amex fee free

                • @isthisreallife22: Thanks for the tip. I will definitely give this a go in the very near future.

In addition, if one collects wine and also wants to earn additional QFF points they could try purchasing through QANTAS wines.

              • @Bills22: Does Rewardgateway charge a credit card fee? Any way to avoid paying such credit card fees as it would technically reduce the savings from such a program?

                • @SimpleLeverage: I've tried a few cards as I have access through work.
                  AMEX, yes.
                  VISA and MC, no.

    • Not this deal but noticed there’s also the altitude black Amex + MasterCard offer until fee free until 28th November which has only a $3000 min spend on the MasterCard to get 80k points.

      https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/ame…

Are there any other differences that I haven’t noticed?

      • +1

two credit checks on this one if you apply.

      • that one only has the annual fee waived if you apply for both the MC and Amex. And you have to reach the min spend on both to get the full 120,000 points (although I guess you could leave the AMEX and just aim on getting the min spend on the MC instead for the 80k points).

i signed up to the westpac altitude platinum instead and recently received my 60k points. gonna close that card now. received my amplify qantas card this morning.

    • Does utilities count?

If not, i would suggest what my friend always does. (do it with reliable friends)

Pay for dinner and ask that they netbank/pay you back.

Or if you know someone is about to make a large purchase.

Pay with your card and get re-imbursed in cash.

  • Does paying rent via bpay go towards the spend?

    • +1

      Never by BPAY.

Postbillpay will work though if you can do that.

      • Thanks for that. Where can i confirm that postbillpay will work?

        • +1

Paypal > PostBillPay will work, bank can't see where the money went.

    • Eligible purchases do not include BPAY, fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account

      • does insurance premium count as fees?

        • No, it's just things like fees out of the card e.g. annual fees.

    • Pay rent using ‘easyshare’ app.

    • I pay my rent through DEFTrent, but my agent had me set up on as an option to a bank transfer. There is a small credit card fee but an easy way to get to the min. spend without extra spend.

      https://www.deft.com.au

      • How much is the surcharge on this?

        • 1.5% for Visa and around 3.3% for AMEX

    • Try DEFTrent, but you'll need your agent to have set you up on it.

      https://www.deft.com.au

      • I actually do pay via DEFTrent but 1.5% of $4000 min spend is quite alot ($60). Might do it if im struggling to hit the $4000 spend just before 90 days

        • Yeah good idea! Just about way around it.

  • Anyone able to find the T&C to explain what eligible purchases is, don't wanna get tricked again!

    • It's right there on that page? "Eligible purchases do not include BPAY, fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account"

    • It's under point 1 of the fine print on that page:
      https://www.stgeorge.com.au/content/dam/stg/downloads/person…

See page 24, point 7.2 of that PDF. Basically excludes: government charges, interest, fees, cash advances, business purpose expenses, balance transfers, and BPAY payments.

The one that sometimes trips people up is government charges. Just don't pay your rates or tax bill or car rego on this card (or do, but just assume it won't be counted towards the min spend).

      • Disappointing. Cannot pay me HECS bill.

      • I have paid rates and car registration by AMEX that earned QFF points and counted for minimum spend despite this stated exclusion. Also
        Future Kids on 17/11/2018 - 16:03
Answered my own question, just get the 75000pts at third statement.
So Council rate and Vicroad car registration fee are eligible purchases.
        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/388942?page=3#comment-6597…
Both of these were in regards to Westpac.

    • Eligible purchases do not include BPAY or BPAY equivalent transactions, fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds, balance transfers debited from the card account, government fees and ATO payments.

  • Hi, are ATO payments counted towards the minimum spend of $4,000? Thanks

    • Probably not

    • +1

Point 7.2 of the T&Cs, you don't get any QFF points on government spending. And generally the minimum spend only counts spending that earns points. So the answer is almost certainly: no.

    • I got on the relatively recent (few months ago) Westpac Visa + Amex deal requiring minimum spends on each to get the points. On the Amex I paid part of an ATO bill which did count towards my minimum spend, but of course didn't get points for (despite paying the Amex fee the ATO charges, the bastards).

So, it can work for some cards, unless they explicitly rule it out I'd think it will count towards the spend minimum but as pointed out above, you won't get points.

    • Eligible purchases do not include BPAY or BPAY equivalent transactions, fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds, balance transfers debited from the card account, government fees and ATO payments.

  • Where did you find the minimum limit is $15,000?

    • That's the minimum it lets you enter during the application

      • When selecting 'specific amount' I do not get any error putting $10k - is there a warning on the following page?

Edit: ignore me - you're absolutely right. Thanks

Guys I'm new to Qantas points….

So can anyone tell me 80k points equals to approx how much in real money terms?

    • +4

You can sell them on here for around $800-$880 otherwise if you use them for things like round the world tickets or business class airfares then they can be worth double.
Here’s an example of what under 80k will get you

    • +1

There's not much value in converting them into Cash. The maximum value is when you are booking a Business class or first class airfare. 80k Q points pretty much get you a business class ticket to most of the countries hence the value is way higher. And again this is all subjective

  • +3

Reminder that if you want 75k points with only $2.5k spend, you can try ANZ instead: https://www.anz.com.au/promo/personal/credit-cards/ib-freque…

    • +5

There's also the Westpac Altitude Black Amex & MasterCard: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/401343
Higher spend ($6k in 3 months) but more points.
Honestly the ANZ black, the Westpac bundle, and this, are by far and away the 3 strongest offers in the Qantas rewards cards space at the moment, because they all have good sign on bonuses and no annual fee. Those cards, or a combination of them, is absolutely the way to go if you can keep on top of money.

Of the remaining 2 of the 4 major banks, NAB has good sign on bonuses on their card but in my opinion need to lower their annual fees, and CBA … well they appear to be too busy charging dead people and then apologizing for it, to have an offer that's even vaguely compelling.

      • I just got my Westpac Altitude Black Amex & MasterCard approved and coming in the mail. Is it too early to apply for this one right now? Spending won't be an issue since I have a lot of expenses coming up.

    • Oh wow. Just got the Westpac one. Which of the ANZ and this one should I go with next? Are there any strategic order to consider?

    • You sure the ANZ deal is valid? I think that link is meant for existing customers (says "Internet banking offer"). Hence there's no active deal on OzBargain.

    • I would wait on the ANZ, according to OzB last year the annual fee waived started in January :)

edit : this was supposed to be a bit higher :)

  • +5

So that is what it feels like when you buy something and it's significantly cheaper a month later….

  • Does anyone know a workaround to get BPay spend to count as eligible spend?

    • Call whoever you are trying to pay and ask them to put it through on your credit card directly? That's what I do with my rent.

    • find a place that will let you buy crypto with credit (assuming it counts towards the $4k), then use living room of satoshi to BPAY it?

probably lose several % in transaction fees though.

    • PayPal…

    • PostPay with PayPal option

  • Damn, just applied for a Bank of Melbourne card with $179 annual fee.

    Story of my life. :(

    • same my friend :(

But can melbourne people apply for st george?

      • I think so, I applied for BOM credit card and I'm in Sydney. :)

    • +1

Call and ask them to waive it in light of this deal- they're essentially the same bank!

      • Just did, and they said they can't do it because this is a Qantas promotion and Qantas is bearing the cost of waived annual fee.

        • Cancel, get a refund, re apply. I did this with westpac. They said I would get a second credit check. Ended up with no credit checks.

  • +1

    Just signed up, thanks OP!

Hopefully I get it in time for my next rates instalment

    • government spend aka rates does not count towards the total.

      • Depends on the payment method. If you can use paypal to pay via postbillpay then it'll work.

      • How about utility bills? Water, electricity, gas?

      • You sure? Normally counts towards bonus points, just doesnt earn regular points. Virgin velocity on the other hand doesn't allow it.

      • Eligible purchases do not include BPAY or BPAY equivalent transactions, fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, refunds, balance transfers debited from the card account, government fees and ATO payments.

        • Is that the T&C's for the bonus points, or T&C's for regular points? I'll call later to clarify

  • Looks like the deal runs until 23 Jan 2019 (Subject to change)

  • Doesn’t include Amex?
I prefer deals with Amex as there are some good Amex promos.

    • I think the only bank that bundles Amex cards is Westpac.

      • Good to know. Thanks.
I already have the Westpac Amex card.

    • What are you even asking

  • I followed the link and there was a popup banner that has the westpac amex and black cards for zero annual fee and 120k bonus points. I assume this is even better (if amex wanted)? Sorry first post be nice.

    https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/earning-points/c…

    • i signed up for just the altitude platinum and got the 60k points. the 120k points deal is OK but requires two separate credit checks and requires you to meet contemporaneous minimum spends on both the MC and Amex. also westpac charges $50 if you want to redeem QFF points instead of altitude points.

      • Fair enough, though note in this instance the qantas rewards fee is also waived for the first year. And the spend is 3k each card in 90 days.

        • yes that is right, for the altitude black. getting my cards confused!

    • +1

The Westpac bundle requires a $6,000 min spend (plus two credit enquiries) plus a 12m exclusion period if you've already held this card:
