Good phone, the "beta" Night Sight update is amazing.

Though you may want to make sure no funny business happening to your Pixel 2 XL, it's more prone to quality control issues than the smaller Pixel 2. Not fast charging, bad screen, slow down etc.
I'm upvoting this deal just for letting me know about this early. Just downloaded it and installed and OMG. I take photos semi professionally and it has blown me away.
This is my garage in normal mode https://ibb.co/e4MDgV
And this is night mode, separate photo, no flash, without touch ups and single camera :) https://ibb.co/dZQvvq
Amazing.
Wow, the difference is night and day !
I'm a big Google Pixel fan but I'd say wait and see what the OnePlus 6t offers next week before jumping in. Prices for the Pixel 2/XL will just go down from here anyways…
Correct, Pixel 3 in a week, for $100 more who would buy a Pix2, I'd expect a price drop.
The screen is pretty bad on the 2xl, I tried multiple copies before switching to the regular 2.. it's fine in good light bar the horrible screen grain on white backgrounds, but low brightness black smear and crush is absolutely terrible
$900 + shipping for a year-old phone, right after its successor has been released? No, thanks.
$900 for a still very good camera phone, still very good performance plus the successors having their share of quality control as well. There's a reason the Pixel lines don't free fall in prices like Samsung Galaxy.
With Night Sight I would say even P20 Pro losing its edge over Pixel, with only Zoom the only thing Pixel/Pixel 2 being weak at since Super Res Zoom not coming over and the disadvantage of not having optical zoom.
Given the hardware features and quality are literally years behind, his point is very valid. It doesn't even have optical zoom, wireless chargine, a good screen, good speakers, decent macro, software features, usb c audio out without a dac and loads of issues.
How does the Samsung S9+ compare to the 2XL?
@awhiskin: I'd argue the Samsung has a worse camera, worse speakers, worse software, but better screen, has a 3.5mm headphone jack, better water resistance, has wireless charging, better CPU and more RAM.
So it would depend on your priorities.
@solidsnek: It's cameras are more versatile, speakers are much louder and fuller. If you were to argue anything, it would be that the design of the P2XL looks years old, and lacks hardware and software features of phones from the last 2-3 years. I own both S9+ and P2Xl. Even my temp IP7S+ has better screen, speakers, hardware, than the P2Xl.
@onlinepred: I'd prefer front-facing speakers personally, but that's a preference.
I don't think there is any comparison on software and camera personally. I hate Samsung bloatware, give me pure Android any day. And the Pixel 2 camera is well known as being the best in class.
I owned a Pixel 2XL and have used S9's extensively at work. I'm not claiming my opinion as fact, just saying what I feel after using both.
@solidsnek: Software is non existent on pixel. That's why it's so smooth. Camera is well below par for optical and macro. Only now with p3 camera update can the pixel take decent night shots. The speakers are not true stereo btw, you get better exoeri nice from ip7 onwards as the top speaker is fuller than both speakers on p2xl. I came from 6P, the p2xl is a downgrade in speakers. S9+ is far better for watching videos and if you play music on it it's significantly better. Pixel is best in class if you like the over processing style and do not use zoom or macro.
@onlinepred: Software being non-existent is a positive if you ask me. It allows you to use stock Google apps and download other apps as you see fit, you aren't forced into Bixby or annoying launchers.
I recommend @awhiskin watch some YouTube videos on Pixel 2 vs S9 camera, but the consensus I've seen, and my experience, is the Pixel 2 takes the most consistently beautiful shots, not due to the camera itself, but the software that is supporting it.
It's pretty clear you enjoy the S9 more, and that's great, I'm just giving my 2 cents. If I were to buy one again it would be the Pixel 2, but based purely on the fact I prioritise stock Android and picture quality over everything else.
If I could bring one feature to the Pixel that the S9 has it would be the display quality as that is definitely lacking on the Pixel.
@solidsnek: I enjoy my Ip7+ more than the S9+ and P2Xl. I'm purely stating my experience having them. I have had 3 P2XL's due to hardware and software failures. Speaker rattle, bluetooth connection drops, white screen on calls, all common problems.
You can keep telling me the camera is the best, I know exactly what you mean, in good conditions it takes incredible photos. It does not have optical zoom or macro though, so it's behind nearly every android and apple phone out in that regard. I use google apps on the S9+, its easy, you download them from the store and use them….Either way most google apps are inferior as they don't offer theming and integration and advanced options anyway.
Yea the display is years behind, like I said even the Ip7+ has a better display.
@onlinepred: Lmao, even without night sight anything Samsung put out didn't surpass Pixel 2 HDR+ in low light. In fact Pixel front facing camera beats most phones including P20 Pro. Unfortunately DXOmark only rate the rear camera.
@Bigboomboom: You are confusing low light with night time. Pixel can't compete with optical zoom, macro, close subjects, or night time. Only now have they released night shot mode for this.
@onlinepred: No, you are confused yourself. The only thing beating pixel in night time is P20 Pro. The rest produces similar if not worse. Please do yourself a favour and see direct comparison between Note 9 or S9+ vs Pixel in night time shot. Heck even Xs Max produces similar photo.
And yes night time IS part of low light. Low light photography encompassing a lot of situation and night time is part of it. Night Sight doesn't need to be at night to work, night sight works in all low lighting conditions e.g dark room.
https://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-9-vs-Pix…
Look at the crap the Note 9 front camera is doing.
With Night Sight Pixel is now on a whole other level like the P20 and the Mate 20 lines, albeit lacking hardware to compete.
@Bigboomboom: https://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=5&idPhone1=8720&…
Look around at the various objects. Rarely is the Pixel 2XL low light better than most other phones. Now with Night Shot it should be better.
Low light is different to pitch black. It's why they released Night Shot. Because Pixel could never do it.
Also this is using auto mode. You know Note 9 has manual shutter control right?
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/9bq8bs/pixel_2…
See photos and comments as an example.
@onlinepred: So all the comments are basically PREFERENCE as NEITHER the Note 9 nor Pixel 2 taking better pictures consistently. Are you trying to put your preference over others?
And pitch black the Note 9 is far cry from what Night Sight is doing. Look at Note 9 folder in your link. Pitch black looks, gasp, pitch black.
Plus the Note 9 is almost one year later.
@Bigboomboom: Newer I presume you mean. Everything about photos is preference. You saying that it's better is your preference. Dxomark for instance doesn't rate pixel as the best anymore. You can choose to agree with that or disagree as it's all preference. I personally prefer more camera features over what pixel offers. Keep in mind my pixel 2 still can't take panorama photos 12 months later.
@onlinepred: My Pixel 2 has no issue taking panorama. DXOmark does not rate front camera nor make an updated review, with the pixel camera strength mostly relying on SOFTWARE. Think it will still be at the same mark with now Night Sight mode?
And there's nothing subjective about pitch black being pitch black vs now night sight mode. Note 9 now has A LOT to catch up in night time.
Plus DXOmark has not reviewed Pixel 3. Newer phone takes better pictures, who would have thought? Once they do it will blow Note 9 all the way, and that is not taking into account new Super Wide Angle front camera.
@Bigboomboom: Yep the Pixel 2 bug didn't affect all pixel 2's, just a lot of them. Same with all the other issues with pixel 2xl.
You know night shot is ported to other devices right?
Pixel 3 will not be rated the best due to lack of optical zoom and other features. Low light still gets quite grainy
@awhiskin: Well phsically it packs a bigger/better screen in every way into a smaller footprint. It's narrower so it's easier to hold with a single hand. It's battery is bigger, and it lasts a lot longer than P2XL. It has optical zoom lens and better macro which P2XL does not. It has wireless chargine. It's speakers are much louder and fuller than P2XL. It has a headphone jack. It has MANY software features that Pixel will not get, like dual accounts for apps, dual bt audio out, full theming, and things like samsung pay which offers more support for certain banks.
Things I don't like is the fingerprint sensor still isn't ideal, but you do get used to it. You have to embrace Samsung apps instead of getting all google apps to replace them like Calendar, Messaging etc etc -you can and there are no real issues except having two apps there. Also not as smooth animation as pixel, it's faster though and holds more apps in memory.
@onlinepred: Hmm..
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate seeing the pros and cons of both phones.
There's a lot I like about the Pixel but the poor 2XL screen, lack of headphone jack & wireless charging are making it hard to make a decision.
@awhiskin: It's a fantastic phone, just not at this price. I think it would be good value at around $600, only if you can live with the compromises. Good luck with your choice!
The '3' is out. I wouldn't do it.
Considering the $600 price difference between the 3XL and the 2XL I think it's reasonable to consider the 2XL.
Is $600 worth the better display, wireless charging, slightly better water resistance and slightly better camera?
Other than that there will be very little difference between the two phones, so it might be worth pocketing the $600 (and avoiding that notch).
I think we will see some better sales on the 2XL once the 3XL is actually released in Australia though.
I think you also understimate how bad the 2XL was. With the 3XL you get a decent touch screen response too which makes the UI much more responsive, half decent speakers too, also the haptic feedback motor is significantly better, as pixel relies on feedback now and the 2XL was bad. Also the 64gb model is only an extra $450. Considering you are already paying $900 for an old phone, why not put a little extra in to get the better version of the phone, really this is what the 2XL should have been last year anyway.
Warranty claim is not as smooth as Samsung right?
They organise a courier to come between 9am and 6pm on a set day to collect the phone from you (you also have to print out 6 pages of documents to give them). It then goes to HK quickly in about 3 days. It takes roughly 1 week to process and then they will call you with their initial results. Another 3-4 days to send a refurb phone back.
My S9+ camera was lagging, I took it in and they gave me a new one on the spot.
Of course not. Even with buying through JB or Google it will be worse since Samsung or Apple has much bigger physical presence and warranty care is unbeatable if you got actual Samsung or Apple store.
Also considering Google didn't produce many Pixel 2/2 XL that makes exchanging harder. Many JB Hi-fi store no longer have any Pixel 2 for example.
I used a Huawei P9 before jumping on to S8+ for 3 weeks and ended up selling it. Reasons, I found bixby annoying, slow fingerprint reader (as compared to my P9) and for some reason I have never stuck on Samsung phones for more than 2-3 months.
Bought 2XL 128 GB from Facebook marketplace after considerable amount of checks and found it awesome and snappier than S8. There are some issues such as the loud speaker is a bit low for phone conversations, night shots (possibly fixed with the latest camera update, haven't checked yet) and also the display issue which people talk of (which I've hardly noticed). Overall, a good phone with good specs.
I got my 2XL from the telstra $59 deals a way back. Incredible value for the price. I wouldn't pay near this for it though, but if you can get it for cheap they are fantastic phones.
Great phone I have the 64 gb model on plan from Telstra, sometime I wish it had more storage but I don't really max it out , mostly these days I stream or cloud so local storage isn't required as much unless it is pirated content
