thanks mate but all the reviews i found of this were negative, i would like to hear how others have gone with it, this is from cnet:

PDF Decrypter works as a counterpart to the encryption program made by the same publisher. But unlike its counterpart, we ran into some issues that prevented us from accessing the decrypted file.

We really liked the program's wizard-like interface, which walks you through the decryption process. First, you add the files that you want to decrypt. Second, you choose the output folder once the decryption takes place. We noticed that the program didn't require us to enter a password to decrypt the file. A status bar displays the decryption progress. The program quickly decrypted the file and saved it to our output destination, but when we tried to open the file, we received a message stating that the file could not be opened because it was either unsupported or damaged. The files that we used during our tests were encrypted using PDF Encrypter, so we were baffled by our results.

According to the publisher, PDF Decrypter comes with a 30-use trial period, but its more like a 30-day trial instead. Still, its poor performance means that we cant recommend this as a viable decryption tool. It cleanly uninstalled from our PC.

Why so skeptical? It only took me about 30 seconds to try out the software.
It seems quite useful to me. I'm glad I've read this post. :)

  • worked for me (used it to remove an annoying pdf password that i already knew) cheers

  • Great thanks.

  • So it uses brute force? Or a dictionary attack? I am always skeptical of these "cracking" programs - unbreakable encryption is too easy to come by these days

The PDF files would not actually be encrypted, so the software doesn't really 'decrycpt' then. They just have a password which prevents editing/opening/printing/copying or some combination of those things. The password itself might be encrypted, I'm not sure, or it could be just stored as plaintext. Either way, software like this just removes the password, letting you do whatever you want with the file.

It's only the OWNER password. It is not dictionary attacks or anything, it's just that the owner password is easily reversible.

This password has been readily crackable for donkey's years.

IIRC there is a second (different type of) password, if you set that, this program won't work.

Things may have changed in 5 years since I last tried this… I dont have a need for a prog like this so I'm not abreast of things. Perhaps someone else can confirm.

    Working well.
I tried this to decrypt a pdf file which I already know the password of as it's been annoying to enter the password every time. No problem at all. Just the file size has become slightly bigger. 89K -> 90K

    Thank you bargain_finder. :D

    • i might try it out than, was just concerned by that 1 user review on that site being very negative and than cnet too which is odd for them but maybe they have updated and fixed the probs

    • Good to know it worked for you!

      • Yes I know that.

But i do not see why they would send you to a page where you can buy the program knowing that you have used the free giveaway code to register the program.

        • They're giving it away free, so maybe they take the liberty to show you what you could buy

    Awesome find, thanks OP!
Any idea fellow OZB, if I saved the key and download the program can I still install in my new computer next month?

I've been using this website for a while now, never had an issue with it. Probably wouldn't use it for any sensitive documents but I've never had to remove protection from anything I would care about submitting to a third party.

Maybe I should post this website as a new deal ;)
