  • Nice deal. Would be nice to have more storage, but an external HDD could fix that!

    • +1

There is an empty 2.5" HDD bay in there, no external needed.

Am I right in thinking this is best bang-for-buck gaming laptop?
Understanding the new Ryzen chips graphics are quite good, but not as good as this dedicated option?

    • Yes. The best Ryzen mobile iGPUs are around the performance level of an mx150 (laptop gt 1030).
A laptop 1050ti is ~2-2.5x faster than that depending on the game/thermal throttling.

  • Yes. A good bang for buck "budget" gaming laptop.
Of course Ryzen should be better for battery life but not as much beef as dedicated graphics.
Specs look pretty decent all round. Even FHD IPS screen.

    • Not sure why you think a Ryzen equivalent would be better for battery life. Better for gaming on battery, maybe, but I'm not sure who does this. With the dedicated GPU switched off, for general office tasks and web surfing, I would expect Intel offerings would easily outlast Ryzen machines of a similar spec.

Case in point, the runtime of Lenovo E480 (Intel) vs E485 (Ryzen). That's a U class Intel processor, but I'd expect the trend to hold.

  • +7

I got one of these for my partner. You can add an additional 2.5" drive as the primary is m.2 drive. You can access the internals to upgrade ram, m.2 and 2.5" drive with a single screw.

    Excellent value for money!

  • Comparison

Is it worth getting the G5 in terms of value?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-G5-15-5587-Gaming-Laptop-i5…

I do plan on getting a bigger SSD additionally.

    • +1

I think so. Especially if you plan on keeping it for a while. Current Gen CPU and 1060 is significantly better than the 1050ti.

Plus you get the extra 1TB drive. Although you lose 128gb in SSD.

    • depends what you think is better value?
This is in a completely different price range.
      70% more.

      • 35% more

      • +1

20% off works on that too, it's about 35% more.
It's certainly worth considering, the CPU and GPU are much better.
It does have a smaller battery though.

    • 128gb is lacking. $100 for a 500gb is worthwhile.

    • https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-G3-3579-FHD-Gam… this is quite good value as well. An even better CPU

or this: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-G3-3579-FHD-Gam… I've messaged them to see if the 8GB RAM stick is upgradable

      • The second one uses a GTX1050 (not TI) + no ssd, the OP deal is much better.

        • I wouldn't say much better. The CPU is significantly better for the same price. I'm not looking for a gaming laptop, but for editing so the GPU is not as important. The Optane Memory turns the HDD into SSD like performance. Just another option for people wanting a better CPU for the same price

    • +1

      G5
      + 8th gen i5 (15% faster)
      + 1060 maxQ (30% faster)
      - ram is 2x 4GB (costly to upgrade as you'll need 2x 8gb)
      - smaller 128gb SSD
      + secondary 1tb hdd
      - 56whr battery

      Inspiron 15 7000
      - 7th gen i5
      + 1x 8gb stick
      + larger 256gb sdd
      - no hdd (does have a 2.5" sata slot)
      + 74whr battery

      In terms of range/build quality, I believe the inspiron 15 7000 = G7 range

I'd say the value is pretty close between the two but I give brownie points for being under $1k

      • I like your work

  • How does this stack up to a Xiaomi air?

    • In gaming and other high performance workloads the Xiaomi Air throttles so it's a bit slower than an average mx150 notebook which is less than half the speed of a 1050ti, so not even close.
They're not really aiming for the same market anyway. The Xiaomi is a small light thing you'd want to take around on a daily basis and use for multimedia and schoolwork or something, the Dell is a gaming laptop, it's bigger and heavier and doesn't care much about looking nice, batterylife is decent though which is rare for gaming laptops so you wont have to take the AC adapter with you everywhere, but you will if you want to play games.
What's important is what you want.

      • Thanks so much :) laptop novice here. Appreciate the advice :)

  • OK guys. My machine arrived from Dell this week from the last sale. It took about 2 weeks end to end. They use Star Track FYI.

What recommendation for games for this beast? I like virtual shoot em up (not too much fantasy or aliens) and driving/flying games. I haven't gamed in 10 or so years.

    • You could try War Thunder, it's free to play, fly planes, drive tanks, shoot stuff. The grind can be painful but it runs on pretty low spec computers.

    • ring of elysium is fun!

    • +3

Relive the early 2000s with old school runescape, really test that machine out.

      • See you say this as a joke, but running osbuddy on this, I get like 30fps without opengl and around 45 to 50 with opengl on. Often it makes my laptop start sounding like a jet taking off. I'm also pretty sure I had to change osbuddy to use the 1050ti over the intel as it wasn't performing right. Great laptop though, especially for the price :). After a fresh windows install that helped a ton though.

        • m8 you gotta get on that runelite train, runs so well.

    • You can get two free weeks on Microsoft Game Pass. See if you like any of those games to play over the two weeks.

    • JV's favourite: minesweeper

  • Really considering this laptop as i really need to replace the worst laptop I've ever owned. The HP Pavilion Dv6-6024TX, was a terrible laptop from the get go. I ended up replacing the fan and thermal paste to get extra life out of it, but has been a terrible machine due to the heating issue.

Has anyone owned this laptop with similar specs and can shed some light on this machine? I'll probably won't be gaming with it, but will do light work with it using naviswork and ms office suite. I want a machine that'll comfortable last me the next 5 yrs, as i struggled with my last dv6.

I've experienced dells for work and was very pleased with it, no overheating issues and love the backlit keyboard, so i'm leaning towards this.

    • +2

1050ti is overkill for non-gaming or 3D rendering purposes. Probably cheaper options with no dedicated GPU.

      • +2

Agreed, if you aren't using the gpu, you should get a laptop without a one. They're generally lighter, cheaper and longer battery.

    • +1

I've owned this laptop for nearly a year now. It's really great for work purposes as long as you don't mind lugging around a 2.5kg laptop around, but other than that, this probably has the best battery life at this price point (I get 10-14 hours when doing work) and you can multitask really well on it.

  • Looking at getting a video editing laptop, and this looks like a great option!!

    • Many people say the screen is a bit average. Its not bad but you may want something better for video editing.

      • They're not professional videos, but travel videos etc. I'm sure itll be fine

  • Looks good, but wouldnt there be better deals when black friday sales hit?

  • wow, this is exactly the same as my laptop I just bought except mine is refurbished. Mine was $879 and this one is $1 000 dollars. Still a very good price! I went for the refurbished cause I save over $100 dollars plus its been refurbished by Dell, so im assuming they did a good job.

  • Not really worth it since the chassis is a cheap one and only 100mb ethernet

    • I think its the best value for a gaming laptop. Of course theres a lot nicer laptops out there but not for this price.

  • This one has good specs but seems to get no love…

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/ASUS-FX503VM-ED191T-15-6-Core-i5…

GTX 1060 3 gb 256 SSD. When PUMPKIN was active it was $1,099 + delivery. Is it something to do with ASUS? Or maybe the listing just has a poor description and hard to search up?

    • yeah, I saw that one, it was pretty good but Im too broke to get it. Not a bad price though…Really weird just looked at the location it is literally 25 mins from my place. Local pickup would be more of a deal breaker for me as its cheaper.

  • I'm interested in purchasing this laptop.

Do you guys think that this can handle current Flight Simulators such as X-Plane 11 or Microsoft Flight Simulator? Can it run smoothly with medium graphics>

    • +1

Microsoft flight sim x? This laptop would max out all graphics.
For X-plane 11, it should handle medium graphic settings

  • I'm going to buy a computer or a laptop.

It is mainly used for Premiere Pro & After Effects for 4K video editing

    Sometimes I think I'll play a game

    my budget is around 1000~1100

I also need a monitor if I buy a computer.

    I'm watching for 3~4 lists

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intel-i5-8400-120GB-SSD-8GB-DDR4…

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Inspiron-Gaming-PC-Desktop-Intel…

    and this laptop..

    could you recommend please?

    • I would recommend 16gb RAM as a minimum.

      • Yeah whatever I buy, I will add it!

  • Can more memory be added to this?

    • Yes there is a spare slot for an additional ram.

  • List price: AU $1,499.00
You save: AU $250.00 (16% off)
    Now:AU $1,249.00

how do you get it for 999.20?

This is a great deal for a great laptop. The only complaint is that it gets kinda hot without much effort, starts up the jet engine to cool down but that's probably normal. I installed a 1tb HDD and a 960 evo which makes it even better.
The m.2 that comes with it is oddly slow, especially mine. Running userbenchmark it was in the lower performing 30% or worse. It constantly took between 30 sec and 2 mins to boot.
Since it can use nvme m.2 I put one in and fresh installed windows which I would advise everyone do. I get bootup in under 5 seconds now and improved thermals (namely the computer doesn't turn into jetmode as often) and performance (few fps here and there), I imagine it was just junk that I had installed and never removed and whatever dell bloatware is with it. This can run a fair amount of games quite well and is a great little laptop. Also, occasuonally the keyboard leaves a little imprint on the screen bezel which just rubs off with your fingers. 7/10 overall.

    • Thanks for sharing.

Sounds like it needs an upgrade (m.2, cooling) once it's delivered. Kind of offsets the <$1K advantage.

      • Dell uses a bunch of different SSDs from different manufacturers randomly on their laptops. I didn't get this problem on my laptop so I guess it depends on how lucky you get.

  • Thanks OP. Needed a laptop for work. I know it is an overkill with dedicated graphics as I don't intend to game, but given decent battery life, processing power (needed for big OCRing jobs), backlit keyboard with numpad, FHD, option to add additional drives easily etc. etc. and not to mention the price point, I pulled the trigger.

  • Very tempted to get one of these, but the lack of USB-C is a bit of a turn off. Would like to use it for work and the occasional game here and there. And for work I'd like to be able to hook up 2 extra displays. I need DisplayPort for one of them.

Was looking at the G5 with the 1060 as an option, but it is a fair bit more. What is the feel / build quality like? I've always owned crappy plastic things. Is the G5 more solid and metallic? Also will the G5 allow 2 extra outputs via HDMI and USB-C thunderbolt ? I know my current ACER laptop has HDMI & VGA, and will only allow one extra monitor at a time.

There's also the possibly of getting a laptop purely for work. Are there any options that might suit me? Around $1000 can support 2 extra displays (one being Display Port). Easy to upgrade/maintain. Good CPU. SSD or option for.

  • So will black friday sales have better stuff or is this the best its going to get?

  • It seems this laptop has been this price a few times this month. I think I'm going to bite the bullet this time.

  • Looks like all the USB ports are on the right side? That's really inconvenient for me :(.

    • From the reviews I've seen. 2 usbs on the right and one in the left.

      • Thats kind of strange, typically you would have one on the right for the mouse and the rest on the left for all the USB cables (phone USB, external HDD, etc, etc).

  • Cheers, I've pulled the trigger.

  • Has anyone's laptop arrived yet? I got sent a tracking code last week, but it still doesn't work yet.

    • Nope…

    • I've manage to get the tracking to work. I had to use a desktop in order to see the re-capture. Says mines, sent to couriers.

      • Mine still says - In Production. When did you order?

        • 14th oct.

          • @madturbo123: Wow. I ordered on 11th and nothing yet.
Hopefully yours get delivered in the next couple of days.

            • @djshitu: Mine only got updated to shipped 23/10

            • @djshitu: Has yours arrived yet djshitu? Still haven't a startrack tracking number yet. The dell tracking update says it'll be delivered between 29-31 nov. Hopefully get it before I fly overseas, in a couple of weeks time.

              • @madturbo123: A mate of mine purchased on the 11th, estimate says 25th and still hasn't received it. Status says "Shipped - With local carrier". Only a link to DB Schenker…
