Just got an Aldi tent, I think it'll do the job for a whole lot cheaper if I'm only camping a few times a year
Pack a tarp
No roof toppers. Looking for one.
Any recommended gear for a newbie?
Best recommendation is to borrow what you can and go with someone experienced the first few times.
Good gear makes a difference but it doesn't come cheap. Even setting yourself up with cheap nasty gear will cost a few hundred bucks and you may find you don't like camping.
Once you know you enjoy it, head to the camping expos and keep an eye on Gumtree for quality second hand gear.
It's no fun cramming everyone in a tent or car if it rains. Plenty of people take a gazebo these days but if you have much room in the car a big tarp (6 x 4m) over a rope between two trees means everyone can sit outside if it rains.
No.
