      ROFL! It's a Wireless network adapter…

  • I don't need it, but good deal

  • can this be dd-wrt?

  • I've got the gigabit version of this router WZR-HP-G300NH it is very very good. And DD-WRT support straight from Buffalo is the icing on the cake. Based on that I'd get this lesser one in an instant if I needed it. Good deal.

    • in terms of range, dual band, dd-wrt'able, having 1Gb ports…which would you recommend? asus, netgear or above buffalo one…

      • I got my WZR-HP-G300NH for $70 off eBay. I needed good WAN<->LAN throughput for Optus extreme cable. There are very few routers around right now that have enough throughput. I got the Buffalo because it has excellent wifi signal (only 2.4GHz though, but that is better for penetrating through brick than 5GHz anyway), way better signal than the others, and the price of course.

I used to be an Asus router fanboi, but the RT-N16 just isn't that good in the real world, its only good on paper.

If money was no object I think the Netgear one is quite popular, dual band but wifi signal isn't as good as the buffalo. More details here…

        • Hi stumo, just wondering about your comment:

"I used to be an Asus router fanboi, but the RT-N16 just isn’t that good in the real world, its only good on paper."

Can you elaborate more on this?
I'm currently using RT-N16 running Tomato USB in a small apartment, no complaints so far.
However, I'm moving out soon, and would like to know if it has any weakness(es) I should know about.

        • @bargaintick I don't think there is anything really wrong with it, its just that it doesn't seem to live up to its specs. The RT-N16 just doesn't do anything better than the competition, and in most cases is lagging well behind.

Like LAN/WAN throughput is relatively slow, slow enough that it could start to bottleneck 100MBit Optus cable. It is rated at 145Mbps, compared to say a Netgear WNDR3700 at 400Mbps. That just isn't good enough considering the Asus is 600MHz CPU (vs 400MHz) and twice the RAM etc.

My buffalo is rated 165Mbps so it gives a bit more overhead when doing other stuff (like NAS) at the same time, but it was a tradeoff because the buffalo owns on wifi signal strength which was the most important thing for me, and LAN/WAN was good enough.

So there are tradeoffs with any router you choose, like I wanted wifi strength above all else, with WAN/LAN throughput a close second. RT-N16 doesn't have anything great to trade off against.

        • @stumo, for pure range rather than speed, which one is better the buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH or Netgear WNDR3700?

        • smallnetbuilder has all the info.

For wifi, the WZR-HP-G300NH has the best range/penetration (and as an added bonus it is also very high up on the wifi throughput tables).
          http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/component/option,com_wireless…

This shows a direct comparison to some other routers on wifi range…
          http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-reviews/308…

You can see in their toughest test locations "E" and "F", the other routers don't even really work for those places, but the buffalo still works fine.

If they were both the same price I'd get the Netgear, there isn't that much in it but the buffalo has the slight edge on range, but lacks 5GHz. As it stands the Netgear was over twice the price I could get the buffalo for, so it wasn't worth it for me.

        • @stumo, thanks for that…will getting the Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR3700 from msy…hopefully range will reach from home office to front room, about 10-15m away thru 2 wall and windows…would this be ok?

Or should i get 2 of buffalo instead (2 buffalos for about same price as 1 netgear)? seems to be only available from ebay only…which one did you get yours from?

          http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Buffalo-Wireless-N-NAS-Gigabit-Router…

        • @dtrinh If you don't have to go through several brick walls then the netgear is probably your best bet. It is more future proof having dual band, and it really owns on most measures. It only just gets edged out by the buffalo on 20MHz 2.4GHz at the very edge of range, everywhere else it owns the buffalo. So I'd get the netgear as your scenario sounds fine even for 2 brick walls.

For me I'm going through 3 brick walls and a pre-cast concrete floor over about 15m, so I knew needed some grunt and didn't want to spend over $100. Have not tried a Netgear though.

Yes I think that is the same seller, I did a best offer of $75 I think.

  • argghh none at North Ryde no fair :)

  • I just put in an order for one of these.. lets see if Harris cancel my order like they did last time as they ran out of stocks even when its perfectly clear that they're in stock..

    • the best way to secure stock is to call the local store

      • +2

Whats the point of having a website that shows stocks if its completely meaningless?

        • +1

Its not meaningless the stock is fairly accurate, what the rep is trying to say is call them to make sure your order is filled as a few people will be buying this in a short space of time and the website may be slightly delayed.

Sure the stock is not 100% accurate but its getting better

        • +1

Because HT runs a true multi channel operation the stock availability shown on the web site will never be 100% accurate because a customer may be in one of the stores and have picked up one or more of the items and be wandering around looking at other products or asking questions before the order is processed through the system, this means that orders placed via the phones or web may not have stock available by the time the order is placed.

This is the same issue that affects any multi channel business that tries to provide live time stock availability as a guide for customers.

    • best to call the local store to put aside for you as it is not real time and other people will get it before that get to your order if your ordered on line

  • I Just ordered one online, great price considering it also comes with a usb wireless stick. :) Also DD-WRT supported.

    • I would strongly suggest calling them to confirm your order ;)

      • Got it from online, shipped from Melbourne.

  • bought one from fortitude valley, there was 6 unopened boxed ones left on shelf as of 12:50pm

    • Just nabbed the last one at 2pm

  • Too bad none in North Ryde. Postcode is only $10 though.

    • Don't feel too bad, even if you placed an order it doesn't guarantee that you'll get it..

  • +2

Order put through and paid, listed as 6 units available in Brisbane when my order went through. Later I got a call that they will only honour if I pay $22+ for postage….

    • no customers are charged until the item is despatched, if you read their terms of sale an order to buy isnt a sale.

Stock only in WA (see post below from the Rep, which was posted 6 minutes before yours), which is probably why they need extra postage..

      • Original shipping was $10.85. Quite a big leap to $22+ for the shipping of ONE item.

  • Stock Only left in Western Australia

I give this a neg because I order this last time and went to pick up it only had the router in the box and no USB adapter and wasted an hour for the staff to figure out what was wrong….so please check your order when you pick up.

    • +3

has nothing to do with this deal…

    • So the staff were helpful and you're still upset!?
Sh!t happens mate… Sure it's not ideal, but at least they were helpful.. It's not like they were being deliberately misleading.

  • Hey all,
Please check your order receipts when you receive them.
I placed an order for 2 of these at $28 each and was quoted there would be $13 delivery (a total of $69).
When i received the order confirmation (after having to ring back and chase one) the total bill for the order was $84. This included $28 shipping. I know it is only $15 difference but i am not impressed that the order and pricing i was quoted was different to the pricing that was billed.

    • How were you quoted the $13?

      • did you "ring back and chase one" or did they contact you to let you know 2 werent available from the location you selected and hence the freight would be higher if you still wanted to get the items???

      • i called the customer service center to place the order at which time i was given the pricing. On receiving my order (with different pricing) i called them back and was basically told sorry it is now $28…..

  • i got a call from HT. i'm in syd and i cancelled my order. addtitional $7 because it will be shipped from perth. someone in perth can have mine.

  • +1

Placed an order for one of these 20 mins after the bargain went up.. 2 units showed as in stock at hawthorn.. 2 hrs later I get a call to say that all units are now sold and that the order is cancelled.. This is now the 3rd time that HT done exactly the same thing.. Cancelled an order that shows as in stock.

Yes I'm aware that I need to call up but at that point in time I couldn't.. If one of australias largest online IT stores can't even manage their purchasing/inventory systems then I'm glad that's the last I'll ever hear from them..

  • if only wefarmers could make HT into OW

    • +1

      It is part of OW.

      Just more specialised IT stuff.

      • isn't HT and OW both owned by wesfarmers

        Just more specialised IT stuff.

i find HT more expensive than most stores

        • +2

Both owned Wesfarmers, but both operated by Officeworks.

Prices are up and down across different ranges. There were always meant to be specialised for small business's, not walk in customers. Why do you think they closed all but one of their bricks and mortor stores in every state?
