    Love the pop up pourer.

    • It is a good idea.

Is this 2017 or are they into 2018 vintage? Should be the latter, but you need to be careful you're not buying one-year-old oil.

One of the best Australian Pure Olive oils. Rated no 1 as per Choice Magazine

    • Best Rated Australian Olive oil for 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, by me.

  • Thanks OP. :)

    • Only problem is that olive oil has a low smoke point.

      • +8

I think you’re meant to drink it, but good point.

      • Go slower

  • I've been using this for years. The full bodied one is the best

    • do you use it for frying ?

      • You're not supposed to use olive oil for frying becuase of low temp to burn and it goes bitter
        Or something like that.

But I use it all the time
        Can't tell!

        • -1

It’s also how it breaks the molecules down. There’s a bunch of articles on how it’s quite bad for you when used for frying.

          Just add it to salads.

        • @cnut:
Yep I use it for salad dressings too, it's fantastic for that. So tasty.

      • +3

yes you can use it for stir fry, this is a high quality oil with a high smoke point than cheap olive oils (about 250C)

You can use it for anything except deep fry

        • Just so you're aware, it's actually the opposite. EVOO has a significantly lower smoke point than cheaper olive oils. Obviously EVOO is much healthier if you don't smoke it, but it will smoke at a lower temperature.

      • +3

We should clarify that it's fine for cooking and frying, but perhaps not deep frying. Extra virgin olive oil has a smoke point of around 160-190 degrees celsius. Think you find general cooking and baking are OK, particularly as it's used lightly in shallow frying and baking.

  • why this extra virgin stated as suitable for frying ?

i thought extra virgin has low smoke point unsuitable for high temp cooking

    • You can fry, just not high temp.

    • yes you can use it for stir fry, this is a high quality oil with a high smoke point than cheap olive oils (about 250C)

So yeah, if you are going to stir fry at >200C then yeah this isnt suitable for you

      • I use it to grill my salmon on my cast iron pan. Is that safe?

        • if you are cooking at a low medium heat, it will be fine. If your are cooking at above a medium temperature, at the very least you should use a refined non-virgin olive oil or just use a vegetable oil and finish the salmon with EVOO.

        • @cathole: I set it on high heat and normally wait until the pan is smoking nice and hot.

Gordan Ramsey uses olive oil for his salmon

        • @Homr: refined olive oil is commonly used for frying, and judging by the lighter appearance, that might be what it is.

You could always just give it a try, no harm in a bit of burnt olive oil once. Personally I just use canola or peanut for high heat applications, and then let things rest in a good coating of EVOO.

i reckon if your pan's smoking with regular veg oil, it's far too hot for EVOO.

        • +2

I wouldn't go anywhere near vegetable oils, so unhealthy. Stick with ghee, not only is it much healthier, its tastier too.

        • Yes

      • can you provide a source for that smoke point? that smoke point you mentioned is higher than all the oils commonly recommended for high temp cooking.

In fact, the more refined (and 'non-virgin') an oil is, generally the higher the smoke point.

        • @ippy: No one is saying you cannot use it for cooking. What we are saying is that you should not use it for very high heat cooking, which you have said is fine. There are two primary reasons for this; the health benefits and the taste.

You've addressed the health concerns. Admittedly I was unaware of EVOO's stability after exposure to high temps. The taste is still a major concern, as most oils (particularly flavorful oils) which begin to burn, inevitably tastes crap. At least I'm no longer concerned about charcoal grilling etc. w/ EVOO.

        • @cathole: I said it was suitable for everything but deep fry. You said it's not suitable for stir fry and that was the only thing I was contesting.

    • by frying, they mean things like shallow frying a cutlet, or browning/sauteing vegetables. I would not use this for deep frying or stir frying.

  • Awesome thanks… will stock up.

Cheaper in Coles if you buy the 3 litre.

    https://shop.coles.com.au/a/a-national/product/cobram-estate…

    $0.97 per 100ml compared with $1.00 per 100ml

    • Glass vs tin

    • Not really comparing apples with apples here.

I usually bulk buy for savings too, but not for oil, this has easy pour spout. Really hard to pour out from a 3litre tin.

    • +1

Well… it's certainly a 3 cent saving but a lot less convenience though.

    • Usually I buy in the 3L tins and pour it into old bottle via a small funnel.

      • +1

Through the easy pour pop spout?

        • I have an old bottle I keep washing & refilling.

  • Is this the one that has the pop up pourer thing built into the bottle?

    • +2

      Refer to first comment lol

  • Which kind (classic/light/rich) would be best for salad dressings?

    • +1

Depends on your taste, I like robust as I love the taste of olives.

Might be a little overpowering for a light salad for most people.

  • EVOO for dressing, butter for stir frying

  • What's the difference between Classic and Robust? Which one has the stronger flavour?

    • Robust

      • Thanks, will grab the robust version

  • Hasn't been this cheap since March 2017!

    • There are many 750mls on PH. It was $6.50 previously if you check carefully.

      • What date was that though?

  • (profanity) yeah… down to my last bottle.

I'll buy 6 which will last me about a year.

And no, frying with Olive oil is not bad for you. Just don't burn the oil.

    What?

    Nutrition Information
    Servings per package: 50
    Serving size: 100ml

    • Drink up mate.

  • I wonder if people worrying about smoke point is the same stuffing their faces at Macca’s or Kfc to save one dollar in a combo

  • Can anyone tell me why all my Cobram Estate EVOO have precipitation at the bottom of the bottle?
