HP ProDesk 600G1 i5 4590/16GB/500GB HDD (Used) $247.50 ($240 with TAKE20) Delivered @ Reborn Electronics ebay

PENNY5TAKE20

Looks like a better deal than the recent Dell OptiPlex 9020s

A teardown video on YouTube shows you how to upgrade this for gaming with a 1050TI (the model depicted in YouTube comes with only 4GB DDR3)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjJGa8dIe2g

Add a cheap cheap SSD and the above mentioned 1050ti, and you'll be set to play most, if not all recent games at 1080p!

Looks like a steal for the price!

I picked up one of these to use as a server.

I guess you missed the part of the comment, where the OP mentions a 1050TI as part of that scenario.

        i did actually so sorry

Edited above for clarity in any case.

    • Even if he can't play any games, 144hz makes a huge difference on your desktop.

  • I get it at $230, with TAKE20 discount.

    • +1

I'm in South Australia, delivery for me was $10

      • Ah, yes I missed the delivery fee.

  • for OS says not OS, only the Win8 COA (certificate of Authenticity), the Microsoft win 10 upgrades finished long ago unless you need special accessibility, or reinstall Win8 and enjoy.

    • +1

      You still can, google it.

    • They killed the upgrade tool, but you can still upgrade using Win10 installation media or even do a fresh install and use 7/8/8.1 key to activate.

        Is this legally ok?

        Thinking about for business use.

        • Personally I wouldn't do it for business. Microsoft usually don't side with them making less money when it comes to grey areas in licensing.
Technically, the activation should work, but if you are audited they will want to see licenses / COAs.

        • If Microsoft has an issue with it they wouldn't let the earlier version codes activate on their win 10 activation servers… They want everyone on win 10 so they can make cash selling apps and office 365.

It's perfectly fine for home or business, you just type in the COA that came with the device in the activation prompt, no illegal, no shady practices or reg hacks, just simple legal activation. :D

If you use a screen reader or keyboard shortcuts occasionally, that's special accessibility.

      • Even the accessibility tool is gone now.

I just bought a cheap laptop from greys and bought this one as well :\

  • where were they when the 10% is on? always missed the boat…

  • Yes these are good value computers but they have been good value for many many months now if not years.

They are not depreciating or going down in price like many other pc and tech hardware and so not much of a deal really tbh.

Still one of the cheapest you can get but they have actually been going up in relative price compared to other offerings.

The tech community is not stupid..

Selling the same device for same price years later is pretty much akin to raising prices so it is a high pass for me because I don't see the drop in value but actually increase in relative price so drop in overall value performance for the money.

These should honestly be sub $200 minimum now if following all other hardware prices and trends.

It is like selling an Xbox 360 at $150 when the Xbox One S goes for barely more than that.

Lower your prices or get competitive and then we shall see.

    • I see your point man.
Would you please be able to steer me in the direction of a better “bang for buck” for a similar figure?
Also, would this be the cheapest SSD in the ‘256’ range?

This has 16gb ram though. When compared to the i5 3rd gen and i7 2gen last year going for 200+ for 8gb, it's basically same price.

      • That is true.

    PROCESSOR / CHIPSET
    CPU QUAD CORE i5 - 4590

    VIDEO CARD TYPE
    GPU Intel Xeon E3 1200 v3

    eh?

  • Any idea if the motherboard will fit in a standard case, or does it have custom mounts?

    (ugh non-standard PSU)

  • +2

It's good value just for the RAM.

Trying to buy a new 4 gig DDR4 RAM chip is around $50 so for me it's worth it for that alone.

These PC's make good VM servers so the more the better.

    • +2

I think you'll find the RAM in these are DDR3, but I agree that they're more than capable of acting as a home server.

    • Agreed.
I need more DDR3 - tempted to just buy it purely for RAM, and sell the rest of the parts.

    • Yep I was wrong, it was only DDR3.

We have similar PC's at work and I misread what it used.

Add a cheap cheap SSD and the above mentioned 1050ti, and you'll be set to play most, if not all recent games at 1080p!

Any PC with an SSD and graphics card can do the same, how well they'll do it is a different story.

  • +1

Any good bargains to be had for a 1050ti for partnering with this unit?

  • So this will only support low profile cards without the requirement of 8pin powah? So limited to 1050ti low profile?

  • -1

The problem of this kind of desktop, they are using custom motherboard it won't fit into standard computer case. Otherwise can move it to a new case and put in a full side graphic card.

    • +3

As mentioned every time a similar desktop is posted here, most buyers interested in these machines are purely for their form factor.

      • I understand if they don't make it with custom motherboard like some slim form factor PC they have before. It will be more useful for a lot of people.

  • -1

You can actually upgrade the PSU and put a higher powered graphics card but it won't fit in the case…

    https://youtu.be/CGOykvFlsmE

    • Do they use proprietary stuff in it? I'm tempted to rip the parts out of the box and getting them into another case with a better psu

      • The video seems to suggest the power supply is proprietary but you can solder an adapter together since the voltages are actually the same.

  • +1

What is the noise like with these?

The similar sized Dell are supposed to be very quiet.

    • Can someone please answer this. Also is there any adapter to connect it to TV to use as htpc. Thanks.

      • +1

Display Port -> HDMI will do the trick

  • Very good deal, tempted to get one thanks OP.

  • A bit off topic. Could anyone advise a cheap way to get a legit(ish) way for a win10?
    Thanks

edit: something like this should work https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Genuine-Windows-Win-10-Pro-Profe…

As mentioned above, if you install Windows 10 with the product key for Windows 8, The Activation Status on Windows 10 will state: Windows is activated with a digital license. I have done this on some machines and the activation is legitimate and permanent.

edit: just realised you were wanting to get Windows 10 by itself, not on this machine.

      • yes, separate issue. but thanks.

  • dead deal?

  • Anyone who needs the Windows 8.1 installation media can download it through Microsoft here.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-creat…

I've already downloaded the Windows 8.1 ISO but I haven't tested it yet.

  • Downloaded the Windows 10 ISO using Media Creation Tool,
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/software-download/windows10
created a bootable USB with Rufus, installed, no serial required (imbedded in BIOS).
    Activated, it's Windows 10 Home.

  • Just in case some people are going to ask, yes the gtx 1050 ti works and typing on the build as we speak. https://imgur.com/a/UxBHWcS

total build cost for desktop + gpu = $480

For around $300 extra, you can get this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/403605, but of course it's a different PC all together as this is a business grade deskop. This should last me a fair while :)
