    The wife absolutely smashes these

    Hopefully not over your head

The 3KG ones with pits are better.

    • +2

Yeah, slightly better tastewise I agree but way less convenient.

    • I find the ones with the pit inside tend to have a firmer texture which I find nicer, hope they have some jars with whole olives.

    • I too prefer the pips.

      I'll give these a go.

My 4yo daughter loves olives.. she's great with the pips as well.

All these comments about your wife and not the olives! What's the world coming to! So I just wanted to say, she sounds smashing! 😀

I thought I was the only one who hated them.

They totally kill the taste of pizza lol

      • +1

        Anchovies are much better

  • How long do you have to eat these after opening? 2kg is a lot to get through.

    • +6

keep them the fridge, easily keep for months, problem can be fridge space.
Other options is put a layer of olive oil in the jar to stop nasties getting into the brine and keep oxygen out.

Last for ages. One way to store them in the pantry is to strain them and when dry put them back in the jar and fill it with olive oil. If you like a bit of extra flavour put some chilli and garlic in there as well. 6-12 months.

I think the jar says consume within a few weeks of opening but I've kept them after opening for ~6 months and they've been fine.

    • Currently Got a 2kg Kalamata jar from woolies that says to use within 3 weeks on the label. That will be a 'best by time so longer should still be fine but perhaps with a little loss of flavour. The wife will knock a 2kg jar over in a week solo though so haven't ever had managed to test that.

  • Love their larg3 jar sundried tomatoes too, hoping they'll bring it back soon.

love the feta from this mob not sure about the olives. I have never seen them before

Just be careful, a lot of cheap "black" olives are actually cheaper unripe green olives that are tanned using chemicals. The slightly soapy taste is the give away.

Can't really trust Aldi anymore after the fake honey reports

      https://www.google.com/amp/amp.abc.net.au/article/10187628

The lab tested eight Allowrie samples as well as IGA's Black & Gold private label and ALDI's Bramwell's private label brand, which are blended local and imported honey, and detected adulteration in almost half the samples.

The honey in question was sold at IGA, Aldi, Coles (until July 2018), and Woolies - it's still listed on Woolies online store: https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/787620/all…

So it's not useful to single out Aldi, it was all 4 big supermarket chains, including Coles and Woolies that sold the stuff, so they're equally culpable. So IMHO, that's not the message.

Frankly, my take-home message was a reinforcement of an existing personal rule: Don't put any food or products in your mouth that might have come from China. E.g. don't buy Chinese berries or fruits (see Nanna's brand Hep contamination a year ago), there's been Chinese made toothpaste with toxic anti-freeze, there's been Chinese baby formula adulterated with melamine resulting in deaths, and so forth.

So for example I'm happy to pay extra to avoid Chinese garlic which is basically almost all the stuff in jars (will only buy the Aussie-only cold press stuff from Coles or Woolies in the fruit and veg section, it's much tastier too), I avoided the fake honey by buying the Australian-only honey at Aldi (it was a little more, but really not much, maybe 50 cents). The hardest of all is avoiding Chinese seafood because it's everywhere, especially the frozen supermarket stuff (so I get fresh local fish, it's much more effort, but I will not be even remotely surprised if the next China-food-snafu involves something wrong with frozen Chinese seafood).

I always check country of origin, and if it's China, or it doesn't say (e.g. "local and imported ingredients"), then I put it back and walk away. Our labelling laws are woeful though - country or countries of origin should always have be clearly spelt out, IMHO, and why this has not happened yet is beyond me.

  • Anyone tried their jalapenos? Any good? I can't find any jar ones that are still crunchy/crispy.

    • That's the brand I get from Coles/Woolworths. I buy that one because it's cheap and because the jalapenos are crunchy.

    • Yes I have tried the ones in the smaller 470g jars and they are crunchy. They have nice heat too

      • Thanks both, I'm gonna buy one and try it!

        • Make sure to buy some baby wipes with the Jalapenos, dangerously good!

Sandhurst kalamata olives are also $5/kg on special. They're really nice and the smaller (500g?) jar means they're easier to consume fresh.

Is this at Aldi too, or another store?

Thanks OP. I bought 3 jars 1 for home , 1 for work & 1 for the car in case I get stuck in traffic.
