I’ve flown quite a bit with United and they are consistently mediocre. And $68000 for a business class flight to Europe is not a bargain.

Not sure where your maths is - 2.5c per point.

      Eg 100k points = $2500

      • +2

The post states that it's 2.5AUD per point.

        • Despite what the posts states it is 2.5cents (AUD$0.025) per mile.

a quick calc based on his figures (180k miles x $0.025) it would be $4500AUD return in business.

    • Agree, they're cheaper than similar carriers for flights to/from US, but you get what you pay for.

Sixty Eight Thousand dollars?? Too many zeros there I think!

You dont actually fly United with these, you can use them for Singapore, Lufthansa, Air NZ any many other star alliance airlines.

  • United isn't really worth it any more with the falling AUD

to get 100K points costs $1881 USD or $2560 AUD for a return asia flight. You can get J class flights to asia cheaper than that on QF and SQ

Could be an OK if you're travelling to Japan as J fares are more around the 4K mark.

  • I can’t find 170k redemption for Europe - they’re all 180k.

Which destination ends up 170k ?

  • +1

Europe works out to be $4250 plus tax of $300 so $4500. The value is in getting on partner airline like Thai or Asiana (Singapore if you are lucky)

I dont think I have ever seen QF or SQ for less than $2500 in J to aisa?

  • My bad Europe is 180k return

  • +1

Shouldn't the numbers in the OP be:

    • 1.85 US cents or 0.0185 USD
    • 2.5 AU cents or 0.025 AUD
  • Note that Singapore Airlines dont open up 777-300/A380 flights to/from Australia to United for redemption. You'll get the 777-200/A330, which in business is a subpar product IMHO.

the disembarking process is unusual. first they smash your head against the arm rest and then drag you down the aisle.

    • +2

And that’s before you get to your destination

    • But their staff will roll the dice before choosing so you might not be that lucky to be picked

Alaska Airlines charges only 60k each way from here to USA in business on Cathay Pacific, a much better redemption than United.

  • I just want to check this is correct - it is 160k for US return on business - you can buy a maximum of 75,000 miles + 75,000 bonus miles = 150,000
10K short to get a US return on business
Are there other ways to get 10,000 miles?

    • Transfer from amex->spg?

      • Does that still work with the marriott takeover?

        • +1

Yes still does but the transfer rate is pretty crappy at 3:2
