I presume Ozbargain users are tech savvy. But some notes:

    • Battery supposed to last 6 months to 12 months of "normal use".
    • Ring provides Live video feed via WiFi Connection to a Smartphone (Android and iOS only).
    • Can be hard-wired to power (8V AC to 24V AC).
    • Attached via the provided security anchors.
    • if it is stolen and you have a police report, RING will replace for free.
    • This is not actually a DOORBELL - that is the optional add-on CHIME product, which is an extra cost. The RING only gives Live Video.

ARE THERE ANY ADDITIONAL FEES INVOLVED?

RING offer optional Cloud Video Recording plans to save videos captured by your Ring Doorbell. However Ring Doorbell will operate without a subscription, providing the same real-time notifications and live streaming video of events without saving a video of the event. RING cloud video recording plans are optional and cost just USD $3/month or USD $30/annually for 6 months of video

I received one at Xmas time last year and have charged it three times to date (most recent was last week). i have a lot of guests so get chimes notifying there is people nearby all the time. I'm happy with the battery life.

Also looks like you can add the doorbell to Home Assistant and save captures to your SD card. If you're so inclined.
Note: have not tried this, don't have a ring.

      • +4

I've got my 1st gen Ring doorbell integrated into Home Assistant, works great. Rings my google homes, no need for a chime!

        • Care to share the guide?

        • got mine hooked up to home assistant too, had an existing door bell setup and didn't want to pay extra for the chime, so bought a cheap nodemcu (had a few of them from aliexpress for $5), flashed espeasy onto it and now trigger the internal existing doorbells with mqtt when the ring doorbell is pressed.

  • How to make sure people won't steal them?

    • +1

No guarantees, just use special screws that fit into the hole and you should be all good.
Besides, no one would steal these for their own use as Ring can disable the device once its reported as stolen AND replace it ONCE. Plus, the resale value is lower than the models up. Once hardwired, it takes time to detach from the panel and by the time they find the screws and take them out, you probably would have caught them.

        • From that thread:

Op from the original thread admitted that his wasn't mounted properly. He used a 3D printed block so that he could angle the doorbell a certain way, and that was where the weakpoint came from. They're not this easy to snag if you mount it as directed.

Is chime on special as well?

    • No, still normal price - $59.

  • Just received an email from TGG saying there is a VIP night tonight online and instore between 5pm - 9pm and if one uses the promo code of "GET10" there is a further 10% discount on the ticketed price, which brings it down to $98.10 which is the same as the Bunnings price match, for those of you who cant get to a Bunnings store.

This promo code can be used on other products as well, but the usual exclusions apply (e.g. Apple, etc).

  • Got an email VIP NIGHT TODAY the goodguys. Another 10% off using GET10 . 5pm -10pm

    • Thanks, I'll update the OP.

Just make sure you have a good internet connection. upload speed is what it seems to need more..
Where on Telstra cable it was 100/2 was hit and miss they recently updated us to 100/5 which is better. Although you click and wait like 30 seconds when out on 4G Telstra or even does not connect on the same wifi :(
People I know on NBN say their one is good as 20 upload speed

    • +3

is it just me or is 2 up insanely low for a 100 connection?

      • +3

        Welcome to Telstra cable.

        Great download speeds, appalling uploads.

We get ~150 down but only 2 up (2.8 if we're lucky)

  • Will this apply (Extra 10% off)? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/398501

    • OP updated. It isn't in the exclusion list so I'm assuming that it will. Note that online sale starts from 12 midday.

  • What is the difference for this version and Ring Video Doorbell 2? Is it only the resolution (720 vs 1080)?

    • i believe from another post few weeks back you can also swap out the battery to charge.

      • Is it worth the extra $200 then?

        • not sure unless the 1080 camera is something of importance.

  • Has anyone got one of these - without being hardwired - and can comment on how well it really works, how long the battery actually lasts, and how easy it is to charge?

    • It's all dependant on your settings. More aggressive motion detection, lots of doorbell rings, lots of live view, you'll only get a month. More conservative settings, you'll get 3-4 months. I charge about every 2 months, but mine goes off 9-10 times a day (motion), plus at least 1 live view a day.

To charge you have to remove 2 screws, and bring it in and plug it into a USB charger. Takes all of 15 seconds to get it off the wall.

I work from home, and my office is in the back of the house. This saves me having to get the door if it's not someone I care about.

    • Awesome, thanks everyone! I don't have the option to (easily) hard wire so it sounds like this should still be fine for my needs :)

  • any hue rgb deals>?

  • You can also get a tgg gift card from AGL rewards for an additional 7.5% off

  • Do you need a home wifi connection, or can this just send video direct to phone of person in the house (through direct wifi) ?

    • +1

      Camera > wifi > America > You

I think the performance would be a lot better if they had a Australian server.

  • I found using a normal $20 doorbell from bunny together with an entry level Xiaomi camera do the trick very well. It costed $200 to get a power point to the front door though but you would need one anyway to save yourself from the hassle of having to change the battery all the time

    • This. I used to have a similar set up with video/photo doorbell. Now I've upgraded my door and removed it. Just got a normal doorbell and I mounted a Xiaomi Xiaofang unit (under $40 delivered off ebay). I drilled a hole and threaded a usb cable through it. Speeds are good on ADSL (12 down/1.2 up) and on the app I have it to send notifications as soon as it detects motion.

      • I was going to buy one until I read this, but now that i think of it I dont think the Xiaofang will fit between the door and the screen door, will need to check.

Also when you say you got a normal doorbell, its not integrated with your camera is it? Justyhere in case someone wants to ring, but the camera is set to motion detect as soon as someome turns up I expect?

        • I don't think so either. The unit is bigger than the gap in between but my front door is recessed so I mounted it outside.

The doorbell is just a normal Arlec brand I think. Got it at bunnings for pretty cheap.

So not integrated. But because of the motion trigger it kinda works similar.

  • i just got one from Bunnings for $147, will they still do price beat? Thanks

    • -1

yeah why not. if they dont, buy another at lower price and return it with the old (higher) receipt.

    • I spent 40mins in Bunnings only to be told we're out of stock… their website said they had stock in my store.

  • Anyone knows if I order today I can pick up tomorrow early afternoon?

    • I ordered with Good Guys today morning and picked early afternoon

      • Thanks :)

  • The issue is the cloud monthly payment.. Not so convinced, might just stick to my arlo

  • The 6-12 month battery life claim is a outright lie.
2-3 months is about all I've ever gotten and I write this having had 5 of them since the original doorbot.

Currently I have a second gen ring and a stickup cam. Both on their own solar.
Also be aware that their inbuilt wifi is weak and low powered. You'll basically need to have a AP/extender as close as possible.
For example my phone and tablet can get wifi right out onto the street but cameras would report low/bad signal strength.

Edit: Also be aware they they have a ongoing cost. Without the subscription based cloud these things are pretty useless.

    • From what I understand, the only thing it wouldn't do is record video?

      • A lot of the time with these things the push notification is slow so by the time it actually rings on your device the person is gone.
The app itself is also slow to open.

Which leaves you knowing that there was a event, but no idea what or who it was.
There are plenty of cheaper options for that such as video intercoms or dumb doorbells.

Cloud is a key function of this device. Unless willing to pay a ongoing fee avoid.

  • Bunnings have now lowered their price to $108. No more price matching!
