  • hmm. i still haven't received a tracking number or shipment notification from this one: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/391988

    • bing lee: Due to the high influx of orders we have received we have had to request stock in from our regional stores, we are looking at getting these dispatched by the end of the week.

  • Mine shipped yesterday..

  • Mine shipped yesterday, expected to arrive Thursday.

Have this machine, better 'value' than the oracle, especially when paired with the $160 grinder.

    • not to mention, i find the oracle steam wand to be far inferior if you know how to texture milk. The oracle has automatic frothing for an acceptable result, but i find the manual mode so much harder than the DB.

  • +1

Maybe I should buy a second one and put it on my desk at work…

    • -1

one for normal and one for decaf, or normal milk and hipster milk fo0r lactose intolerant.

I'm thinking of 2nd grinder for decaf.

      • +1

wow i got negged ….must be a hipster milk drinker ….

  • Is it really worth $710?

    • How long is a piece of string?

    • +2

What exactly are you asking? $710 is a pretty good price for this machine.

    • +2

      It's worth it.
The coffee that comes out of the machine is on par with your Favorite cafe.
Make sure you get a proper grinder, and good beans and your set.

    • +1

Depends on what you want out of it. They make really good quality gear.

I have the Barista Express model (paid around $600 for that) which also includes an integrated conical burr grinder (but is single boiler so you'll have to wait 20 seconds between foam and espresso), makes a brilliant cup of coffee, bought the same machine for work and it's been pumping out ~30 cups a day for a year and a half and is still going strong. Can't really go wrong with these Breville machines.

      • so dual boiler just means you can drip coffee and steam at the same time? i thought maybe it meant the steamer had more power or something

        • I have the sunbeam dual thermos block, makes coffee and froths milk at the same time … very fast heatup time which is great for one cup in the mornings.

If you have your own grinder, most of these $600+ machines will make coffee as good as or better than a cafe.

But you need your own grinder …. so you adjust to machine and coffee style.

        • drip coffee and steam at the same time

that's the primary function of a dual boiler machine, but often your second point is true too - the BES920 is rated about 2200W (compared to an entry level espresso machine typically around 1200W) and the steamer is so powerful that if you're not paying attention the milk will be up to temp before you've properly textured it.

    • You don't need a double boiler for home use.

For a bit more you would be better with something like this
      https://www.jetblackespresso.com.au/shop/p/rancilio-silvia/

      • Pffftt, of course it's needed.

I've got the original 900. I've had it serviced once. It's been going for about 5 years so far.

      • I'm on the Silvia now. Honestly only worthwhile with the PID kit upgrade - which is about $300. That's why I'm weighing up selling and switching to a machine like this.

  • Does Bing lee have all their items 20% off? or selectively?

    • +1

Just selected items from the looks of things.
I contacted them asking them why the specific rice cooker I was looking at wasn't discounted and they responded that eBay selects the items that go on sale.

  • This, or the rancilio silvia v5?

    • +1

Silvia with a pid. More expensive though probs

      • +1

silvia will last longer, these other machines can froth and make coffee at same time …. I've got sunbeam em7000 dual thermos, love the fast heat up times, my old sunbeam lasted 6 years with a cup each day, didn't die, gave it away as I wanted something "new".

the heat up times and not being able to make coffee and froth milk is why I didn't go the silvia path.

making 4 cups if friends are around and not being bale to pull coffee and froth would kill the evening.

        • Thanks for the info. Validated my decision a little (I bought the Silvia for $800 and I don't have milk very often).

      • Thanks, I'll look into this "PID"

A PID controller is a device that is integrated into your espresso machine that regulates the temperature so that it stays exactly at the degrees you need to make the perfect cup of coffee.

        Your username checks out.

        • Just so you know, this Breville one also has PID control(it helps to keep a consistent temperature), and in general a better choice.

    • the silva is undoubtedly better build quality and will last longer. as garage sale points out, the 920 is a dual boiler (and can draw double the current of the silva) so will heat up in 5 mins compared to half an hour and you'll be able to steam milk much faster. i also went down the path of the 920 because waiting half an hour for the machine to heat up in the morning was a bit impractical.

      • The Silvia heats up in 4 minutes or less.

You can give it 10 minutes if you want the basket to heat up more

        • Yep, mine heats up in less than 5 minutes as well. Never really had to "wait" for it.

        • It doesn't fully heat up for at least 30mins. You can speed that up by running water through the boiler, but to get the machine right up to espresso temp, it certainly takes about 30mins.

Lots of info on this on Coffeesnobs forums and the like.

i sold my Silvia and italian grinder for the breville BES920 and the smart grinder pro.
      Haven't looked back.

The silvia is bullet proof, but its warm up time and transition time between espresso and steam was a killer. Great if you mostly drink black, horrible if you're entertaining and 5 people ask for a latte (i nearly jumped out of a window).

      • Either way that would've made you entertaining.

      • I know the feeling :) I just make people espresso with my Silvia. I'm seriously contemplating selling the Silvia and rocky combo for this and the smart grinder.. but I feel somewhat attached ha

    • +2

This if you want a very good machine that does everything pretty well for a great price.

The Silvia with a PID if you're prepared to spend more to get a better overall coffee, but lose some convenience. You can't pull a shot and use steam at the same time, and it takes much longer to warm up (15-20 minutes, versus 2-3 for the Breville). Not sure what the warranty situation is if you install a PID on the Silvia, perhaps someone else can shed light.

IMO the Silvia is butt ugly, especially with a PID added, but it also has a much smaller footprint (it's about half as wide). The Breville takes up a fair bit of bench space.

I would say get the Breville unless you only drink black coffee and don't mind waiting for it.

      • Agree. We have both machines and the Breville is much easier to live with (we all like strong milk-based coffee).

As others have pointed out, it is one thing to have a decent machine - but unless your grinder is up to the job, you'll struggle to get results that you're happy with.

      • 15-20mins for the Silvia to warm up? Mine takes about 2-3 for espresso and maybe 5 for the steam.

        • +1

the grouphead etc isn't all properly warmed up in that time, however you can expedite it slightly by running water.
It's recommended warm up time is 30 minutes.

The breville has a grouphead heater and dual boiler.

I liked owning an italian machine, but i love owning the convenience of the breville. I've also found that adjusting for beans etc to get consistent shots to be a bit easier on the breville. It's a little more forgiving in my opinion.
The silvia made better espresso, but you had to be on top of your game.
My wife used the silvia once and hated it. She can happily make a strong latte that i will drink on the breville.

  • Have had ours and the Breville grinder for 20 months, was $1070 for both at the time from Myer, excellent machine.

  • +1

I'm hanging out for this deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/350211 again. It might be wishful thinking, but I'm hopeful!

    • don’t need one but at that price i’d buy and try one.

    • The good Guys have stopped selling it, only a couple of units left in WA

  • We've had ours for just over 2.5 years and has started to intermittently emit a high pitch noise when extracting, and also water dripping from the wand and the hot water outlet. Great machine though, roughly 2-3 coffees a day. I have been advise by BReville to send it to a repair agent who will inspect the machine. I'll be interested to know if it a wear and tear item, and if they'll cover the repairs for it even if it is out of warranty. We have mostly Breville appliances at home so it will be interesting to see how they deal with it. If the outcome is poor I'll just buy an entry level commercial coffee machine because our current one has lasted over 15 years!!

    • We've had a 920 for 2 years and it has been sent for repairs 3 times. Makes great coffee, but wouldn't call it a reliable machine. I bought mine with an extended warranty so that after 5 years I'll trade it in for a new machine and only pay the difference in price.

    • My machine was doing the same but descaling the machine (vinegar and water) fixed this issue.

      • +4

Use citric acid instead of vinegar

    • also water dripping from the wand and the hot

Every coffee machine I have seen will do that after a while.

It's the O ring wearing down over time and an easy fix.

If you are looking at a new machine, buy a Silvia.

  • While we're debating on its merits, the damn thing is sold out!!!

    • +2

They keep re-stocking… back in stock now

      • They must be rolling in it!

  • Buy it from Bing Lee Chatswood, they closing shop, they'll slash that price for even further.

    • Good ol' Chatswood Bing Lee. Best discounter on the planet. Its been fun!

  • I have one of these. It replaced my Rancilio Silvia and worth every cent. It was 719 at Bing Lee and I already had the grinder.

Buy a cheap dosing ring and spring loaded tamper from AliExpress and it cranks out cafe level coffee every single time. I also bought a distributor tool but it's a bit wanky and probably not needed.

Only difference to Silvia is lower steam pressure, somit takes 10 seconds longer to texture milk bit that added time is folding it longer so a decent tradeoff.

  • Picked one of these up for a similar price last year, been thoroughly impressed in the improvement over the Breville Barista express (which I sold for $450, so only a small outlay!). Halves the amount of time needed for a cap. You can set a wake up time on it easily. Easier to clean as well with the Breville cleaning kits.

Partnered with a second hand Mazzer I found on Gumtree, some Manna or BayBean beans. Using a scale I fill too 530/531 grams (incl. basket) and tamp about 10-15kgs pressure. Makes a café style cup. Highly recommended.

  • Make sure you get a good grinder otherwise you will be cursing the machine and quickly losing the love for that sweet sweet drop

  • Nil stock 😭

181 Sold…. keep checking they have restocked a few times.
