Citibank Platinum Rewards Credit Card 100k Bonus Points $49 Annual Fee First Year

820

For those of you (like me) who have already churned the better deals from ANZ FF/ANZ Rewards/Westpac/St George/NAB/Qantas Money in the last 12 months, this is a pretty good deal. $50 for 54,000 Velocity points (per May’s bonus promo) is decent. This deal was posted on Ozbargain a few months ago but is listed as expired. Citibank had this deal expiring on 30/6/2018 but have just updated the expiry date to 31/7/2018.

Details:

100,000 bonus Citi Reward Points when you spend $3,000 on your card within 90 days of approval, and enjoy a reduced annual fee of $49 for the first year (reverts to a discounted annual fee of $149 thereafter).

Rewards points can be converted into frequent flyer miles including Emirates Skyward Miles, Velocity Frequent Flyer and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. As well as to buy gift cards or items from the store. Receive 100,000 points when you spend $3,000 in 90 days from card approval.

100,000 points will get you:
40,000 Velocity Frequest Flyer points
33,000 Emirates Skyward Miles and KrisFlyer Miles
Prepaid Gift Cards worth <$500

Note that Velocity have bonus transfer promotions with their partner programs once or twice a year. The last one (in May) for this amount of points was a bonus 35% on transfer, equating to 54,000 Velocity points for this deal.

Conditions on the Bonus Points:
To earn 100,000 bonus Citi rewards Points, you must apply for a Citi Platinum credit card by 31 July 2018, then spend $3,000 on your card within 90 days of approval. Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Refunds, Chargebacks and Special Promotions do not contribute to the spend threshold. Please note that if have a balance transfer, you will be charged interest on any spend that you make. The bonus Citi rewards Points will be credited within 6 - 8 weeks of meeting the spend criteria. All rewards are subject to the Terms and Conditions of the Citibank Rewards Program. This offer is valid until 31 July 2018. Post this advertised date; Citi reserves the right to continue, withdraw or change the offer at any time without notice.

Actual credit limit will be assigned based on our credit criteria, subject to confirmation that you earn a minimum of $35,000 per year and your credit rating.

Decent return on investment. However, Sh1t1bank are notoriously difficult to deal with so you have to add in many layers of getting stuffed around into the equation.

    • +3

Strongly agree. My card got compromised once (must have been an insider job, since I hardly use it online and never overseas), and it was a major pain to sort out. Citibank charged me for transactions which happened after I already blocked the card, and I ended up having to open a dispute. It was a ridiculous process which required many very long phone calls at inconvenient times. Thankfully I make more money out of them than they out of me, as I just use the card for points, not for borrowing.

      • +1

Citibank's security also weirds me out.

I tried to pay $1/2k for flights and it did the whole SMS thing but that rarely succeeds. They ended up calling after I failed a few times. Then they basically just asked me a couple questions and did the sale, the questions weren't exactly unknown to most people too. What was the point?

        • +2

I use Citibank online banking on a daily basis, for a small business, never had an issue with their SMS (One Time Pin) code and I make daily transfers.
Their service has also been fantastic from my experience and I've been with them for about 10 years for both an everyday transaction account and credit card.

        • +3

You are missing the point here. You didn't call them, they called you on your registered mobile number. Even asking a simple question as to if you are trying to use your credit card online was more than enough.

        • @simmomelb: This is on the purchase screen of "abnormal?" purchases.

        • @jsb: I changed my phone number right before purchasing, I didn't get any SMS or anything, tried a couple times then they called me.

I had just added the phone number.

        • +4

          @simmomelb:

          Couldnt agree more.

When it comes to Customer Service there is no one even remotely close to Citibank. I have tried Commonwealth Bank ( current customer ) , ANZ , Westpac and none of these matched my experience with Citibank. Everytime I called the customer care of these banks the agents tried to rush and finish the call sooner - however with Citibank it was simply one thing at a time, trying to understand the customer which I greatly appreciate.Commonwealth has a great app however I know atleast 3 friends of mine who were victims of fraudulent transactions off their Commonwealth bank debit cards and they had to claim the money back from the bank.I see there are lesser layers of security on Commbank transactions and I have had to reinstall their app so many times on my iphone 5s !

I remember once when I was overseas and trying to book a flight ticket to Sydney. I was using my Citibank credit card for the purpose.Since I had been overseas for over a year I had basically lost my phone number which was linked to my Credit card. The transaction required me to enter the code Citibank sent to the phone number via SMS.I called the customer care while the session was live - on my laptop and the customer care literally 'okayed' that transaction and I got my ticket ! That's what I would call a customer service ! And mind you , it was 1.00 am in the night and I was talking to a 24/7 customer Service ! Simply amazing !

        • @amipatil:

I have had similar experiences with AMEX. They have always done the right thing by you and really actually try to be proactive in a nice way.

Never heard of the wife spending referred to as an insider job before..

        • That's the funniest comment I have read for a while. +10 if I can give it.

        • Funny, but not what I meant :)
She is a secondary card holder, so no need to steal my card :)

What I meant is that Citibank has had issues with their staff accessing card numbers.

    • +2

Cannot agree more. Hopeless bank with the shittest system.

  • +30

Most OzBargain veterans will already have the Signature card as free for life, but great deal for OzBargain newbies.

    • +1

At that time I was still a student. Hope this offer will come back again.

    • Is that card good for raising your credit rating?

i.e. just piling costs onto it and paying them off with your current standing cash?

I can imagine the more fee-free cards you have, the easier it is to raise/maintain your credit rating?

      • +3

Unsure where ppl get the idea credit rating really matters. And by that I mean just don't default. Banks really aren't looking at much else beyond that and enquiry patterns (which are adversely affected by card apps). Source - work for bank

        • -2

It does matter though. I don't use loans because I'm smart with money, but that doesn't matter if I want to own a house one day. Mortgages are required.

Credit rating with mortgages is important I heard? Having a credit rating would be ideal then.

        • +1

@StoneSin: what do I know, only work at a bank :)

        • @StoneSin:

Having a bad credit rating is bad. But good and excellent I dont think makes that big a difference as far as lending is concerned. Serviceability and LVR is more important for those in good standing

        • @drprox: So how do you think credit rating is irrelevant?

      • +2

The more active cards you have can now actually now negatively impact getting things like a home loan as you are at a bigger risk of getting into debt, no matter whether you pay them off or not.
Best having one active card and paying that off on time :)

        • Awesome.

        • It only negatively impacts you if you have large credit limits on the cards. If you had 3 credit cards with 1k limits each, a bank will not care.

But given banks want to max you out on credit limits with their cards by giving you 10-15k minimum, it is a problem when you get 3 of them.

    • Yep, it was around 2008 from memory

  • Yes, agreed with the signature card. I have one too but rarely use it, only keeping it for overseas travel insurance.
Are Signature card holders eligible for this offer? I want to rack up Krisflyer Miles.

    • +1

I had a close friend who had the platinum free for life, she applied for the signature (while still holding platinum) and got the bonus once reached minimum spend.

    • Hope they will come back. Missed out too

  • I wish the Signature fee free for life came up again, missed out last time!

  • -3

    That's $400 plus in Coles/Woolies vouchers..

Also Citibank doesn't charge overseas transaction fees. So far been happy with the card but the OzB in me is thinking of cancelling and re-applying sometime later..

    • I can't find the overseas transaction fees terms, is this correct?

      • No, they have outrageous fees on their CREDIT CARD. I use my Bankwest Platinum Card for overseas and the free travel insurance thing.

    • i think they do charge overseas transaction fees for this credit card?

    • I can see they charge a transaction fee of 3.4% from this link: https://www.citibank.com.au/aus/static/feesandcharges.htm.

    • +2

No overseas transaction fees is for their debit card.

  • -2

How do i get QFF from this?

    • +5

      You don't.

    • Use points to buy gift cards, sell gift cards in classifieds, purchase Qantas points :P

      • Or, wait for a Velocity transfer promotion, transfer for ~54,000 velocity points, sell them on here for $540+ and use that money to buy flights with cash (or if looking for business flights, use to buy Qantas on here)

  • Thank you op. Applied just now. Now it's time to close Westpac card from the previous deal.

  • +2

never for me again with Citibank. they rejected me twice with no reason.

    • True, be careful as it may impact credit history

    • I was rejected once too without reason.

Also they hit my credit file twice on the same date which can affect your rating. Trying to get them to remove one of the checks was way too difficult due to their terrible offshore customer service…never again.

I have a basic debit card for fee free transactions overseas and that is all. No issue as long as you never have to deal with customer service.

      • How does one apply to remove credit checks?

  • Can I just also say they’re app is horrible. Always make you enable touch id after a few months and sends you 2 sms and 2 emails for a money transfer.

  • +2

I have the Citibank Signature free for life and will never cancel it, but I'm finding less reason to use it since they reduced the points earning. I collect Velocity so $1 = 0.5 Velocity points. Starting to migrate to the Coles cc especially for items I can claim price protection on, and ANZ Travel Rewards which is $1 = 0.75 Velocity points.

    • Me too since signing up for an amex explorer. Earn rate bit better and the travel credit covers annual fee. I plan on using the Citi card for a free bottle of wine soon! First time ever..

      • +1

Awesome! Unfortunately the restaurant selection for that in Perth isn't as good as Melbourne.

  • +7

be warned - citibank's online banking, app, and service are appalling. I have a free for life card and thats the only reason I'm sticking around but their technology and processes are absolutely stuck in the 80s.

    • I used their app few weeks ago and it's much better now. Only issue I find is it takes ages for any transfers to update in the system (app and online)

      • 2.1 stars on the Google app store and with recent reviews of how absolutely terrible it is.

        https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.citibank.m…

I can't overstate how crappy their app is.

I'd never recommend Citibank, both for their service and technology.

        • +1

Agree but I'm here for the 100,000 points grab and run

        • i just used to check balance, other functions didn't even try. I guess its better but still below standards vs other bank apps

  • so this is different from what some ppl have (the free of life) and now called "infinity" card? (means i can apply for this eventhough i have that infinity card).

bit confused because they keep changing my card name.
actually at the very beginning, my card was platinum. then become signature, then infinity.
    is that right?

  • +1

For the churners, just FYI Citibank also does Qantas Premier and Virgin Money, I didn’t realise and applied for both before they politely rung me to tell me to cancel one.

    • Yes and from what I've read,to not apply for this if you have applied a citibank or affiliated card within 6 months, as you will get rejected.

  • Ah well, good deal OP. Not sure if I'll get approved as I already hold a free Citi Prestige card with them ($30k limit) along with couple other Platinums from other institutes I got recently. Hopefully the offer stays longer.

    • +1

Why did you tell us your credit limit?

      • +1

        because he CAN.
actually 30k nothing special about it….

      • That's the minimum limit for that card. Nothing unique or special in that. But the card itself is pretty awesome. Tonnes of benefits. Big fan of Citi :)

        • Citibank is insane with credit limits, they give you massive limits in the hope that you spend and never be able to pay it back.

  • Can I ask my fellow Ozbargainers, Doesnt it adversely affect the credit score when you keep jumping from one card to the other from various credit providers ??

    • +1

It might, but why do you care? Unless you are applying for a homeloan in the near future. Credit rating is a sham regardless.
Like many Ozbargainers, I have been taking advantage of these deals every now and then, and at a rate that I have ran out of applying for cards with major Banks. And I applied for this instead.
My credit rating went from excellent to below average and has climbed back slowly but I don't care to be honest.

      • Do you lower your existing card credit limit before applying for new ones? Recently applied for virgin they gave insane >$20K credit limit, which i definitely dont need. Before that i applied for westpac they rejected without seeing my payslips. Not sure why i got rejected

        • I try to go for the minimum credit limit, I always specify or tick the box for minimum limit. And as soon as I get the points and lounge invites I cancel the card. I don't keep them for long.

    • Yes it does

      • I thought the new credit system only looks at how many lines of credit you currently have? That should mean that if you close a card, it no longer affects your rating? I am not sure of course.
The previous credit record system only kept track of your credit applications, regardless of what you closed or what you owed.

        • correct.. however not all the banks have started reporting existing cards (was due 1 July) so the intended effects are yet to be seen.

  • ok just done the online chatting:

for people who own "infinity/infinite" you still can apply this platinum and get the bonus (if approved).
    they are 2 diff cards.

    • If you already have a card, depending on limit the risk of denial is high with Citi. Depending on your circumstances you may or may not want to risk your credit score.

      • I thought it will be easier to apply for another card from the same bank

  • If I pick the points and also have a Balance Transfer with the application. Am I correct in assuming I will have no interest free days for any new purchases. So in order to make the required $3000 purchase I will need to pay them off asap?

    • Yes, doing this works. When you pay, pay slightly more as you get charged interest immediately on the day of purchase.

  • +2

Citibank is fine if you never have an issue because their customer service is just terrible. Worst i've ever experienced. Only reason i keep my platinum card is because its free. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

  • "Prepaid Gift Cards worth <$500"

    How much less?

    • You can get them from about $50 up if I'm not mistaken.

  • just fyi
    https://www.citirewards.com/cms/sites/globalrewards-au-eng/i…

    AUD250 COLES PHYSICAL GIFT CARD
    Starting at 52,100 points

    COLES SUPERMARKETS $500
    Starting at 104,200 points

    • so, not much less then! To be honest I just put down <$500 because it is not the best use of the points and I therefore couldn't be bothered looking up the gift card rates.

      • what is the best use? (but i dont fly often so i dont need hotel, travel, flight, etc)

        • +1

If not using for business class flights, or upgrades, then selling the points on here is the next best value.

        • @endolphin: oh wow didn't know can transfer point like qff. Learn something everyday

  • -2

So.. what are the best cards to sign up and abuse for the free gift cards etc? I presume all the ones referenced in the OP are expired. I'm looking to reduce our cost of living in the short term while we tackle the new mortgage as fast as possible.

How many can you do before your credit rating tanks and you get refused credit (which I assume is then going to cause massive problems)? We've already applied for a home loan AND refinanced it AND increased a credit card limit (which I'm told is treated like a new credit card application) within the last 18 months.

We don't have issues with annual income or paying off the cards every month, if that makes a difference to recommendations.

  • +1

They are still active, check ANZ, Westpac, St George. There are several with the first annual fee waived.

  • May be a bit off topic, but does anyone recommend a credit card which give points for ATO payments and QFF points, ideally Visa or MC?

    • Yes, everyone does.

      • Any recommendation? Thanks

      • +1

I'd like to know the answer to this too. Thanks

  • +1

Applied and approved within four hours after uploading payslips.

    • i couldnt get to that point and now i cant upload them, they asked me to provide, but no place to upload or no email to send. They have just rejected my application and asking me to POST a request with any docs so they can re-review! 80's bank indeed!

      • Well, some got approved some don't….
You can just send email with attachments, don't forget put your application reference number to:
        [email protected]

        • Yep agree. I just got approved. Submitted application Thurs night. Looks like it would have been approved Friday but the payslips I had submitted were too old. Called up, straight through, provided with that same email address to send latest payslips too and the lady said she would check back personally in 10 minutes to check if the email had come through, and forward to the review team. Got a text with approval 30 minutes later. Too easy.

Note I also hold a Virgin Money card (citi as well).

      • You should have received an email to check the progress of your application, which allows you to upload your document. Fairly straight forward to be honest.

        • Agree. Not sure why he got so pissed at citi
