lol, OP not sure if you have bought one, but you can update the post to add the code "PENNY5" for 5% off to bring it own to $248.90

    • yes, i did but now cancelled and re-ordered with the coupon. Thanks for the update.

This is a very good deal. Unless you really need this thing to reach the extra 2m and are too stingy to buy a $10 repeater, then the US and AU versions make no difference. Your router picks the least used channel anyway.

The cheapest Australian stock is $322 (30%) more.

However, I don't think this router can connect to the internet….no ADSL ports.

  • I was just about to post that! Also can be had for $282.75 from sydneytec (with eBay plus) Aus stock. I just purchased it from sydneytec seems to be the recommended router so I'm hoping it will sort my shitty wifi issues!

How? I just went to their site and it says that it's $384.54?

      • bit late to the party, sorry! mine arrived a couple weeks ago, paid 282.75 and working great, no more wifi issues!

  • I imagine it is necessary to flash the Australian firmware so as to avoid breaking the RF laws. Can OP confirm?

    • Don't think that's the case, I have never heard of region locked routers or illegal routers in different regions.

      • Different countries have different laws governing RF equipment, including home wifi routers. This includes frequencies and transmission power limits.

Probably not a big deal for a low powered RF device such as a home wifi router. However, the law is the law.

    • Doubt you'd need different firmware, just change the locale settings, which will take care of transmission power.

    • Can recall the precise details, but @ 2.4GHz AU WiFi rules are more favourable than US / EU rules.
We have chan 12 & 13 that the US doesn't have, and i think we're permitted more power than EU.
Not sure about 5GHz bands, but for 2.4 you're usually better choosing AU in the settings.
Usually no need to flash firmware in most AP's I've encountered, the chans and power levels are usually just a region option.

  • I had a friend purchase this from the same store and received a US model.

Note it says this on the eBay description too:

This is an Asus RT-AC88U Dual Band Wireless Gigabit Router from OEM channel with US power supply (and universal travel adapter), please refer to the photos for more detail.

As far as I know, you CANNOT change the regions regardless if you flash AU firmware on these devices.

You can change the region if you flash with Merlin under the Professional tab in Wireless

    • Oh if it's oem it may have aimesh disabled. You may also not be able to update firmware using the software update functions - you may need to update by placing the router into firmware update mode losing all previous settings. Not sure if this applies here model but that's my experience with TM OEM versions.

  • Thanks! This will go great with my ADSL2+

  • Lol, what's up with the latest routers and modems looking like something from outer space???

They should've stuck with the look of the AC-68U, it had a nice pattern.
