Nokia 2710 'Navigator' Mobile Phone $87 UNLOCKED at Harvey Norman!

330

Nokia 2710 Navigator edition for $87 unlocked!!!

Comes with a brilliant GPS mapping system with free lifetime updates provided by Nokia, an awesome little camera, great battery life. Can surf the internet on it etc etc etc…

I have one of these, I purchased mine for $99 through Virgin and have some remanants of Virgin branding on it…but this $87 one is unlocked!

The ONLY downside I've found with the phone is the internet works at 2G speeds, other than that, it's a wannabe cops best friend :) The amount of evidence I have sifted through on this phone is awesome.

For example, I can take a photo of a suspect, MMS or email it through to a 'friend' and have that person arrested by dinnertime :) Sorry, I'm going on, this is one awesome awesome phone! If I didn't already have one I'd buy another!

  • can you tell me if i can just throw the virgin card away and use my vodaphone card with no issue and all will work ? sorry not up on all the mobile phone stuff ( im old ! )

    • +3

That's what unlocked means. You can use any SIM card you want.

    • +3

Throw the virgin card away? It's unlocked :) It doesn't come with ANY cards, you buy the phone, that's it.

It has 'Virgin' in the specs because it's lazy work on Gerryatric's part

      • +1

I spoke to one of the staff at Harvey Norman earlier today, then mentioned that they'll rectify the "Virgin Mobile" listing when retailers pay GST for online overseas goods :P

If I use it with Just prepaid can I still get GPS function? What is the difference between this and normal GPS device?

    • +2

This phone has a proper GPS chip inside it (most phones do anyway). So it will function like a normal standalone GPS.

You do not need a data plan (internet access) to use the GPS, although if you want to use the A-GPS function or traffic updates etc. you will need to have data allowance in your plan.

Nokia lets you pre-load maps and voices onto the SD card, just use the Ovi Suite application to download maps.

      • Thanks, will it speak out direction like normal GPS? How about map update?

Sorry I am new to GPS.

        • It does 'speak'. Map updates are provided through Nokia software provided with the phone

        • +1

          re: map updates

Whenever an update is available you will get a notification on your Ovi Suite software. Just hook your phone up to your computer to get the latest updates.

Map updates occur about 3 or 4 times a year, sometimes less. It's also free for lifetime.

      • Be careful! Mobile phones can be very slow (20 minutes or more sometimes) to get a GPS lock without a network connection. So you really need A-GPS, ie a SIM, but the amount of data used is very small.

        • This does it in about a minute. Less if you've used it before in that area

        • +1

My Sony X10 takes about 20 seconds :-)

        • Yeah it took me at least 15 minutes un-assisted.

    • GPS is a LITTLE tricky but once you get the hang of it, it's a beautiful beautiful system, heck, I can enter the 'GPS mapping' WITHOUT a GPS signal, punch in an address and pull the map up to find out where it is! It's pretty damn accurate to with-in a few metres. Not bad for a cheap mobile!

      • You're getting confused with maps and GPS. They are two different things. Maps stay local on your phone and are always available. GPS is a signal that communicates with the satellites. You dont need a signal to use your maps, however you do need a signal if you want directions from A to B.

  • But why would you want to be a cop ? :/

    • +3

Because I enjoy being spat on and abused…

      • +1

I thought it was the other way round?

      • +1

Wouldn't a donut deal be more useful to a cop? :)

        • -3

          I'm not one yet :)

I prefer to think I'm a new breed. Fighting crime with 1's and 0's. I like a good donut but all those excess processed carbs sorts of slows you right down.

Thanks for all the info, I saw it yesterday on HN site but posted on Whirlpool but nobody answer my question.

Seems like a very good deal most over $100 found here http://www.shopbot.com.au/m/?m=nokia+2710

Just need another basic phone for my kid, I can give him my $19 Nokia bought from HN last time and I will get this myself.

    • +3

The phone isn't without it's flaws. I mean, what phone isn't. But for the price/value you'd be extremely hard pressed to find anything better…anywhere. I thought it was a steal at $99!

        • What is it with people on ozbargain today…DUH it's $87, if you read it properly you would of seen I bought mine for $99 and thought it was a steal…

  • This is not a 3G phone, thus you can not use Three sim card with it.
Plz correct me if I'm wrong

    • One would assume it would 'drop' down and use 2G.

Damn…just checked, looks like 'Three' don't like people using their sim card in non-3g phones :(

      • That's the annoying part of 3, together with their epic fail network. Can't wait until my 3 contract end. 3 & Vodafail is never again for me.

        • I sent 4 SMS to my friend 3 mobile, none of them get through.

          weird.

      • +1

Can't believe this phone doesn't support UMTS. Only GSM! In this day and age……..

        • We can't win all the battles. Does everything else though…I think the reason why it doesn't is because Nokia probably has a model with a higher profit margin with all the features but with UMTS :)

    • 3 Networks only work on 3G, however if you stick a 3 card in it, it will still probably work…. however you will be charged excessive rates since it will be on roaming 24/7.

  • +6

    I've got this phone too.

Only issue I have with it is that when you have it paired to a headset/in-car bluetooth device, the GPS stops giving you verbal directions. So I can't use both hands-free and turn-by-turn GPS at the same time.

Mine came with a free car mount, but I paid ~$150 at the time.

BTW try to price match anywhere but Harvey Norman. Gerry Harvey wants me to pay more taxes, so I want him to go broke.

  • Do the maps extend to NZ?, was thinking about getting this for OS?

    • -2

      And…and…and…and…and…and…and…and…and…and…and…and…and…and…and…

I just went through mine and I don't think there is a country it DOESN'T cover!

Still, just make sure it doesn't get stolen by an orc or stepped on by a troll

      • What are you saying bro :P

        • The country coverage in regards to GPS maps is enough to get you out of trouble almost anywhere in the world. I think it even located a few drug dealers in Colombia (yes, it has maps loaded for Colombia!)

      • The people who negged this must be from NZ

    • That's the good thing about Nokia. You can download any map you want, worldwide.

I loaded my E71 with maps of Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, and they all worked fine.

  • thanks for all the info just went out and picked one up

  • +1

I personally think just the sheer addition of a decent GPS system to this phone is worth the $87! I mean, where else can you get a portable GPS system for that? Tell us what you think of it :)

    • These type of phones with gps are great when you at some places without a map/gps on hand. I have a Nokia 6720 and installed several maps on it. It helped me few times with direction in Auckland,NZ.

Only annoy thing about Nokia's software Ovi is the address input enter one line. Ie, if you want to go to , said "1 Georges st, Sydney" then that what you have to enter. Yep, enter the address in one line , instead breakdown to suburb+street name+house number like regular GPS devices.

    • I have tried various gps units (tomtom, garmin and igo) and from my experience tomtom and garmin are tops. If you need a reliable and affordable gps, big w has the tomtom start gps for $98 :)

      http://www.bigw.com.au/electronics/GPSNavigation/IncarGPS/bp…

      • I bought one months ago at that price (I always get lost) best thing ever

  • +1

The screen is too small for proper GPS, I think :(

    • +1

Mate, it's a phone - what did you expect?

  • can you install Garmin Mobile XT into this phone ?

    I hate Nokia's software :(

    • Did on my 6110 navigator back in da day.. No problem.

      • This one is not a Symbian phone. Can you install anything except java apps on an S40 phone?

        • I thought GarminMobileXT got the axe? I don't see it on the Garmin shop anymore.

When Nokia and Google announced that their phones would have free lifetime turn-by-turn nav, Tom Tom and Garmin stopped selling their paid for apps. The only one Navigation app they sell now is the one available on the Apple App Store.

Anyhow, this phone uses the S40 operating system — not a smartphone. GarminMobileXT only runs on smartphones.

  • If someone has brought this phone and has 5 minutes to spare could the please contact me. I need to know if a piece of software works on this phone first.
    Cheers

    • The software must be a Java application.

i.e. file extension ending with .JAR or .JAD

      These are Not compatible:
      .SIS
      .SISX

These are symbian installer files, and won't work on this phone's S40 operating system.

      • Thanks for pointing that out, I should have been clearer.
The application i need tested is a Java application.
I would be ridiculously grateful if someone could test for me.

  • Doh, I just bought the Nokia C3 for $99, what's the best to get rid of it?

  • those who want to join the virgin network might also want to consider their online deal on the Nokia 2710, $79 with $150 talk and text credit and with free postage.

    http://www.virginmobile.com.au/Shop/ProductSummary/9156/Noki…

  • Does anyone know if these GPS navigation maps come with warnings for
    Red lihgt camera
    Speed camera
    School zone ?

  • Is HN provide code to unlock or the phone already unlocked from Nokia?

    • +1

      already unlocked

      • Ta!

      • I bought this mobile y'day @Harveynorman Mount druitt, but it is locked to Virgin network. But you said it is alerady unlocked. Is there any process to unlock it? or Am I missing some thing here. If it is locked to Virgin, it is not a bargain as I need to recharge minimum of $80 to get it unlocked for free.

        • Take it back. Tell them to unlock it as per their ad:"Product Type: Unlocked" under the specification tab.
Print out the page to show them.

        • they must have sold you the pre paid one not the unlocked one mine works fine —take it back—

        • RC144, how much did you pay? If $87 then you get the wrong one.
They also have $79 locked to Virgin.

        • The 1 I bought unlocked too.

    • Hi Chris McMahon, Thanks for the suggestion. I took it to the shop and got replaced.

@POWERevolution, I think they have two offers for the same model one is with locked to Virgin for $73 and the other for $89 unlocked. Sales person @shop mistakely gave me $73 one. But when I took it back to them, they replaced the virgin locked mobile with unlocked one for the same price. Good for me as I got it for $73 :)

Folks, this is great value if you really want a GPS phone.
But keep in mind that otherwise it is a bit basic. No 3G, no Symbian or other smart OS.
Something like a Nokia 6120c would be a lot better except for the GPS and navigation license.

BUT, most people rarely use one except in their car. And a $99 3.5" touchscreen might be worth the small extra cost.
Only get this phone if you really want a miniature GPS.

  • Sold out in HN Melbourne City (QV Complex) :(

Fellow said he has had a few people asking this morning.

  • If anyone here has brought the phone and has a spare 5ish minutes could they test a Java application for me?

  • Got mine today. Had to ask directly as it is not advertised and listed as $156 in the cabinet. Its $87 on their computers. Nice phone.

  • Picked up one from HN Chirnside park (vic) not a bad phone and a nice upgrade from my old pos.
    Thx.
