  • Will do 4k, but will drop frames badly on high bitrate content.

I moved mine to the bedroom and replaced with ATV 4K which is a lot better (but sadly more than twice the price).

The xiaomi is great with regular HD content but it isn’t really a great 4K player

    • I haven't seen any drops what encode type of movie files were they and are you sure wasn't network issue?

    • Are you playing downloaded files via network or usb?

      • H265 and both network and usb

    • If I'm going to spend that much I'll buy a gen 6 or above NUC. That is in fact what I use (NUC6CAYS) but at the moment I don't own a 4K screen so am only going on other people reporting that 4K works well. Can personally vouch that it's great for FullHD. I haven't loved the firmware snafus though I now finally have a firmware that hasn't gimped USB 3 speeds and doesn't cause video drop outs.

  • LineageOS/postMarketOS support, or is the bootloader locked down?

    • +2

Bootloader is locked but it's important to remember this is running Android TV and not Android for phones/tablets.

    • there are cheaper s905x and also now s912 platforms if you re going to reflash ….. people tended to buy these in hope of fhd netflix , but they are wireless only so also need good connection. or wear the extra cost of a supported usb to ethernet adapter.

      • Cheers, I am daydreaming of a Linux box but with more RAM than a RPi.

        • lots of these boxes have 2GB ram, and a few of the new ones have 3GB BUT to run them as a pure Linux box with community support you would need all the libraries and drivers and that isn't the market they are designed for, it's hard to beat the RPI or an intel chip if you want a Linux box with broad community support and software.

  • -3

Dunno. Surprised they haven't dropped the price more on this yet - it's getting old. I think now I'd buy the vodafone android tv box before this one.

    • You can buy two of these nearly for one Vodafone. And there isn't that much benefit between the two at moment

      • So how to get this for $60 delivered?

  • +5

I have this, but would get the Vodafone model if buying now.

    • +1

      Are they $80now?

      • A stupid rhetorical question. The clear implication is that it is worth the small difference.
The other option, the Shield, is about $280.

All three are very similar as media boxes, but the Shield is far ahead as a games box.

        • What does it do for the extra that this doesn't do?

  • +2

the vodafone tv is infinitely better than this

    • how so?

    • -3

What does Vodafone have that this doesn't.

TV tuner with no way to record is pointless since all TV's do that anyway.

Ethernet at 10/100 is pointless when it's not gigabit. For the price it should of been

Are you stuck with Vodafone OS?

interested in seeing where it's worth the extra money, wonder if they last block it unless on Vodafone network like telstra tv

      • +2

ha ha. You clearly are clueless. ethernet interface and tv tuner is useless you say ? Then you took about vodafone os. ???? huh, what's that ? It runs android tv unlocked.

        • -1

I use usb to Ethernet adapter and that does 200mb and has 3 usb port expansion.

SD TV has issues with interlacing, only suitable for HD channels

Can't see any difference in OS?

        • -1

The OS is released by Vodafone and requires them to update it

        • 100M Ethernet moves a lot of data, it's full duplex and none of the wireless bloat,

gig Ethernet …. these little boxed don't have the architecture to utilize the bandwidth, they can do the clocking but not the utilisation. The architecture isn't even designed to get data off the flash and down 100M Ethernet fully utilized. These aren't PCs or servers, they are mobile phone chipsets.

    • I don’t know much about these boxes, would the Vodafone one support Foxtel Now app?

      • If the app has Android TV support then yes

  • This plays Netflix in 4k?

    • Yep, 4K Netflix is supported

    • yes as well as 4k youtube.

You need to have fast internet as well as AC wifi for this to be achievable

      • AC wifi is nice, but it also has ethernet.

        • Ermm no it doesn't.

          Ports
          HDMI: HDMI 2.0a x 1 port (HDCP 2.2)
          USB: USB 2.0 x 1 port
AV: SPDIF Out / 3.5mm audio output x 1 port
          Power: 1 port

I have owned one since they were released. You can get a usb to ethernet adapter but AC wifi will be faster

        • @garvani:

Oops, was confused with Voda-TV thread.Sorry. I have the Mi Box too. No 4K though.
What is limiting the USB ethernet speed? Drivers too slow?

Netflix recommends 25Mb/s for UHD. N-wifi not good enough? 100-wired certainly is enough.

        • @manic: The limiting factor for ethernet is that the usb port is only usb2.0 not 3.0.
Your mileage will vary for wireless N and Netlfix 4k, sure some people will be fine but for others they wont have the bandwidth. I can see around 40 different wireless networks in my lounge and wireless N wasn't cutting it due to all this interference. Wireless AC solved this issue instantly and now i can stream netflix 4k as well as high bitrate x264 without problem

  • What kind of timelne for postage from these guys?

    • There is a shipping calculator under the Add to cart button that'll tell you how long it typically takes after dispatch.

I have a couple of these in my house and absolutely love them. Very easy to navigate (missus friendly), the Bluetooth remote is minimalistic and feels nice! Having a Chromecast inbuilt is handy as well. Also received a software update recently which is great.

Only little quirk it has is that it goes into sleep after about 15 minutes of inactivity so I couldn’t Chromecast without waking it up first but I have overcome that by installing “Photo Gallery and Screensaver” app and choosing this option to run from "Daydream" setting. It keeps my device active at all times which is what I needed!

    • Can you confirm how you managed to do the software upgrade the device

      • Just go to "About" section and there is an option that says "Software update". Before you try anything, you might have to go to Play Store first and update all the apps, then only the software update would work.

  • +5

I still love my Mi Box, however, having used the Vodafone TV over the past week, I am leaning towards that over the Mi Box at this time (for an extra $36), due to:

    • Ethernet
    • Better remote (dedicated app buttons / tactile buttons / more buttons in general)
    • TV tuner
    • 2 year Australian warranty
    • Android TV 7.1.1
    • +1

And the fact that you can go instore and pick it up today, would make it worth it for some.

      • +3

True, and they have free express shipping if bought on their website too.

      • Maybe when it's same price

    • Netflix supported device

    • My kids can use the Mi box remote with no issues so can't see how the Vodafone remote makes it better

Unless it's gigabit Ethernet there is no benefit there

TV tuner doesn't record and has interlacing issues with SD channels, so better sticking with TV for TV broadcast

So many vodafone trolls roaming ozb today.

    • It feels like Android users in an Apple deal

      • sometimes people over analyse these thing or focus on hardware bake offs …. reality is most people just buy one, plug it in, use it, and hope to get OTA updates ….. and if they need support a shop or phone number makes it easier.

Some people aren't into tech and chasing the firmware or reflashing, or hacking, they just want to use stuff, come home, watch a movie, have a beer and eat some pizza.

Same with android vs apple, some people don't root phones or load customer roms …. they just use a phone as it comes, load apps they want and hope for OTA updates and if there an issue there is a shop or phone number for support.

If your time is valuable you don't waste it stuffing around with this stuff, heck people are too time poor to get a takeaway food (use uber), move their lawn (use jims) or clean their house (use cleaning service) last thing you want is to hire someone to mod your phone firmware or TV box.

        • Doubt the average consumer cars about OTA updates.

some people don't root phones or load customer roms …. they just use a phone as it comes, load apps they want

You don't have to root phones, load roms, and can load apps they want on either ios or android.

  • I was going to get one, then I just decided to save up a bit longer for the Shield.

  • +1

Mi box works great with Cec as well can control the whole unit with Panasonic TV remote

  • Does anyone use a game controller for games? I've got old xbox 360 remotes. Not sure whether to buy a usb dongle receiver or get a new cheap controller which is compatible…

  • How does this go with playing content straight off an external hdd?

Also how does it go with downloading cover art for TV Shows and Movies? - My father uses an oldschool WDTV which is having problems.

    Thanks for any advice
