Qantas Premier Everyday Credit Card - 40k Points No Annual Fee First Year w/ $2000/Mnth First 2 Mnths

290

40 000 Qantas pts+ some insurance cover and some other small perks with no annual fee is pretty good. EXCEPT..

It's with Citibank/ Qantas. I applied for their 75k product ($149 annual) 1 month ago. Still waiting..plenty of info on ozbargain about that product. Prepare yourself for a plethora of calls asking for the same thing over and over.

They say no exclusions on bonus spend, but plenty on normal spend (they want you to cancel after 2 months it would seem!)

*Note $2000 per month first 2 months required. $35 min income. No lounge passes as with the 75k Premier Platinum product.

**Hire car excess reduction cover is only 3k, not the full 5-6k of others.

  • What's the minimum credit limit one can apply..

I applied for their 75k product ($149 annual) 1 month ago.

I got declined immediately. I have a good credit rating and enough income. I'm guessing because I had a citibank card last year that I closed a few days after getting my bonus points. They probably keep track of unprofitable card-churners.

    • Based on the credit reports they see I doubt that is the reason.

The same thing happened to me. I then got accepted for the St George and ANZ Black cards the next month so I have a sneaky suspicion Citibank have marked me for what I am - a serial churner - and now have me blackbanned (in their defence, I churned their Virgin Velocity card 3 times before they cottoned on). Cest la vie as they say in the classics.

      • I've been waiting for them for a month. I think I might play their own game and withdraw my application (better not appear on my credit rating).

What does everyone recon? This 40k points 4k spend no annual deal vs 75k points 3k spend, lounge passes $149 annual fee?

        • Lounge passes can be sold for $40 each. I assume the 75k also comes with a $50 off voucher ($100 min spend) @ Epicure. With those two things you've almost got your money back.

I went for the no annual fee and with it a lower credit limit.

  • Why not just get the Anz deal? Is it because annual fee is lower on an ongoing basis?

Probably because we are all in the 12 month waiting period!

    • Why not both?

That's what I'm thinking about doing

0.75 Qantas points per $ is to the higher end of the Visa/MasterCard rewards programs. Some of the black cards and most of the good American Express ones are 1 for 1.
The min spend is a bit rich for the amount of points you get tho

    • Check t&cs. There will be a heap of Un-eligible spends for 0.75:1. Bonus point spend should be free game though.

Just going to put this here:

Eligible Transaction means any purchase excluding (but not limited to) Cash Advances, Balance Transfers, Special Promotions, BPAY payments, purchases of foreign currency and travellers cheques, transactions made in operating a business, payments to other Citi accounts, bank fees and charges such as interest and ATM charges, transactions made using Qantas Points and government related transactions. Government related transactions include transactions with government or semigovernment
entities, or relating to services provided by or in connection with government (for example but not limited to transactions made at Australia Post, payments to the Australian Taxation Office, council rates, motor registries, tolls, parking stations and meters, fares on public transport, fines and court related costs).

Please note that whether or not a transaction is an Eligible Transaction will be determined based on information provided either by the merchant or the relevant financial institution (including information about the type of business conducted by the merchant). This means that, for example, spend with certain merchants may be characterised as spend with a government related entity and therefore not an Eligible Transaction, even if that merchant is not in fact a government related entity.

Just to add to the above. I was told over the phone direct that none of the above apply to the bonus spend requirements, only for regular points acquisition. Would I believe them, absolutely not. Get their name, receipt # etc. I'm currently in a FSO situation with them (but Virgin version of this) for this exact issue. They said I have made the required spend over the phone, but now wont give me my points (paid RAA insurance and Teachers registry which they are now claiming is excluded).

The usual Paypal loophole to pay bills is 100% a no go with this card.

It's the motor registries/ semi government that get you. Then if you call up they will say insurances are excluded as well, even if they aren't listed on the T&C's.

So, even though I posted this deal, be very careful. If all spends are shopping/ holidays etc you will be fine. If you think you can pay rego, water, electricty, council rates etc look else where (semi government spends and the Paypal loophole wont work). If you want to get the bonus points then leave, you MAY be fine as these SHOULDN'T be excluded, but if you chose the Virgin option, then these spends 100% are excluded from the bonus points promotion and the regular spend.

      • Looks like I'll just purchase wish cards.

Applied for the premier platinum card for the 75k points.
Quite a tedious application process having to provide scans of drivers license and Medicare or passport along with the usual proof of income and employment. By the end of the process kinda wish I hadn’t bothered given the number of documents requested.
