  • Edited to removed extended warranty. Seems like it costs more this time around, $356 compared to $170 previously.

I was about to post this one and saw it's already posted. Comparing to my previous deal:

    + $4 cheaper!
+ Customisable! You can add that backlit keyboard for $50 extra, or change other configurations.
    - But it's no longer "ready to ship". It's now "Ships within 2-3 weeks".
    - Extended warranty is more expensive

    • What's your take on the below comment re "notebookcheck review they recommend the i5 because the i7 throttles so much and ends up same or slower"?

      • +4

When I looked into i5 vs i7 debate years ago, the performance difference was 6% and the cost difference was 30%. Only get it if you have money to burn otherwise get better warranty or screen or build quality, etc.

        • Damn. I paid like $110 extra for the i7 for my T580 ordered just a week ago.

      • +2

That's pretty much been the status quo for the last decade, but most consumers still think i7s are a huge step up from i5s, and are willing to pay for the "bragging rights", so manufacturers catered to them and now i5s are a relatively rare sight in laptops. Also often upgrading the screen forces you to "upgrade" the cpu to i7

        • 8th gen i5 has 6MB cache, where as i7 has 8MB - is the difference significant to the real-world performance?

        • +1

@sky blu: Only in very specific CPU-intensive tasks. (not games)

        • @xrailgun: Thanks. As said above I've already ordered the i7 for ~$110 more, can't go back now :)

Looking at the notebookcheck review they recommend the i5 because the i7 throttles so much and ends up same or slower anyway. Worth considering to save another $55.

    • +1

Not surprising - the difference in performance between i5 and i7 is really small compared to previous generations. I got an 8th gen i5 in my laptop, and it's great. I would never have considered an i5 for a previous generation.

  • How good is RX550 compared to 1050Ti or 1060?

    • 1060
      1050Ti
      …..
      ….

      ..
      RX550
      .

So in other words, trash tier, or equivalent to HD620?

        • It's a discrete graphics card, so it does offer some more graphics processing power than an integrated one.

I'm no expert, but I'd say the RX550's performance can be closely compared to a GTX 1030.

        • +1

@sky blu: That counts as trash tier.
