  • Sorry for my ignorance but in case I add more ram and change the ssd, will I be in trouble with the normal and extra warranty?

    • +1

I believe there's an FAQ on ThinkPad's site somewhere, I am 99.9% sure you can change the RAM, no worries. Not sure on the SSD. I have a ThinkPad myself and wanted to change the RAM a while ago - haven't got around to it yet as it's a bit exxy - and looked it up.

P.s. if you find cheapo 8gbs RAM for one of these, let me know! haha.

    • +2

Looking at Lenovo's own forums I'll say no, it won't void the warranty (at least for adding the RAM). Obviously it will not cover the faulty SSD that you swapped in. Normally Lenovo provides hardware service manual to help you to take the laptop apart to upgrade parts. Here's one for E580.

    • +1

Talked to cust rep and said i can add myself ram as it is pre configured and if you request to customize will take another 3 weeks ro deliver as it needs to come from China.

Delivery takes only about 3-4 days in sydney

      • So RAM is fine, what about the internal hard drive (SSD)?

        • +1

It comes with ssd plus there is a spare slot for hdd

  • Is 8gb of ram enough, with this?

Usage: several browser tabs, remote desktop work, office suite, Netflix FHD.

    • +3

Plenty for you, more than enough.

I have a similar specced ThinkPad with 8gbs RAM and it only slows when I have fullscreen games open and multiple tabs in another window. Just the multiple tabs and it has zero concerns.

    • +1

      Yes.

    • +2

      Yeap. I have a 16GB E570P and I don't think I have ever exceeded the 8GB threshold.

      • Same here, it's a one happy laptop and boots into KDE/Plasma in like 10s from cold boot (POST takes 5s or so…). As for warranty and service I got hit by the Intel NVMe XFS bug with the drive it shipped with, they replaced it with a Samsung one, on-site even though the warranty was return to depot. It's my first Lenovo but very happy so far.

    • +2

      Easily enough for the above.

    • +1

      Thank you all, much appreciated!

  • Good price, especially considering the 3yr onsite warranty is only $170. (Although personally more excited/looking forward to E485/E585) =D

    • Don't know how soon they will be here. I don't think E475/E575 sold well here as they were based on under powered A6/A10 and not much cheaper than i5/i7 counter part. Ryzen will make a difference but it's still up to Lenovo Australia to decide whether to bring the models here.

      • I hope they will (Lenovo UK and Israel already have the E485/E585 pages up), with rumours that they'll be available in other markets in April.

If there is a demand for 8th gen i5/i7 + MX150 machines then naturally there is demand for Ryzen Mobile. Unfortunately so far Ryzen offerings in Australia has been almost non-existent (and forget the overpriced Harvey Norman exclusive Ryzen equipped HP Envy x360 15).

Considering they are very capable hardware at very affordable prices (e.g. Inspiron 15 5575 www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-15-5575-laptop/pd $999, before UNiDAYS 15% off), I feel that they just need more consumer exposure and they'll have more sales.

  • I rather swap out the graphic card for a total of 16gb of ram. Plus it is cooler without graphic card.

    • +2

I would disagree. You can easily upgrade ram later but it's not the case for graphic card. And when it runs, you have an option to use Intel GPU to save on energy and reduce heat.

      • I didn't know we can do that. How do we choose that option?

        • +1

It's often auto so you don't have to do anything. Normally if the laptop is on battery saving mode, it switches to on-chip GPU. Otherwise it uses external GPU when it's on high performance mode.

Be sure to check the system configuration if it matches your order. It's not uncommon that Lenovo sends you the wrong one…

Happened to me a few years ago.

  • does this one has backlit keyboard?

    • I don't think so. E580 can be configured to have backlit keyboard, but this offer is for this particular pre-built model that does not have backlit keyboard.

I've been using my E580 since Christmas, and have been pleased with everything bar one detail.

Be aware that the lid does show up oils from fingerprints extremely easily. Even after touching with recently washed hands, it can appear quite grubby.

My solution was to purchase vinyl wrapping for the exterior lid. Around $15 from eBay, and I found it easy to apply with a craft blade to cut the excess. The added scratch protection is a bonus. http://imgur.com/a/FbdB8

    • I bought the E480, and have experienced the same thing.
I found some for the e480 on ebay for $20ish. Was the wrapping easy to put on?

      • +2

I didn't buy specific Thinkpad wrapping as there weren't any available at the time.

I chose a large (perhaps 1200mm x 800mm) for around that price. A heat gun made sure the corners wrapped around without too many bumps; I'm sure a hairdryer would do a similar job.

        • +1

          ahh thanks for the tip

    • Edit: never mind

    • +2

      Dang, that looks nice!

  • Bought this in the previous sale. Can't fault it.

Super quick, handles some light gaming and pretty decent battery time.

  • Got a L470 today from work to replace my aging T420. It's only i5 with 8GB & 256GB. LENOVO has it $1299, not as good as this.

  • whats the factory RAM configuration? 2x4 or 1x8? how easy for diy upgrade?

edit: what do you guys think of this

    Dell 15.6 FHD / i7-8550U / 16GB ram / 2TB hdd / Radeon 530 / Backlit keybaord / DVD drive
    $1139
    http://www.dell.com/au/p/inspiron-15-5570-laptop/pd?oc=a5110…

    • Physical drive and amd graphics, could be better

    • +1

Radeon 530 is much weaker than AMD RX550, it's based on a much older architecture and using 28 nm GCN.

  • What’s the best laptop to replace a 15” MBPr 2013 that died in January?

    • +4

Any laptop would be better than a laptop that died in January 2013.

Thanks clown, real helpful. Next time the circus is in town I will recommend they get in contact with you

        • If they use business laptops for sure I can advise them, too.

Dell xps 15 - has discrete graphics but wait for 8th Generation CPU
Lenovo X1 Carbon - light and long battery life but no discrete graphics
Microsoft Surface Book 2 15 inch - when money is no object

      • Thanks Austechguy!

      • The Dell XPS 15 looks nice, is this the 2018 version? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5idqkky9Mpg

        • Yes the xps 13 eighth generations are out the xps 15 is coming out soon, there are some good deals in thr xps 15 seventh generations though

        • @Austechguy:

Good news, put my MBPr 15" A1398 logic board in the oven for 8 minutes at 180C

Cleaned it with IsoPropyl Alcohol and re-applied new soilder to the CPU/GPU

No more black screen or need for a new laptop….#winning

  • Does anyone have this? How is the battery life (website says 13hrs but it's usually less IRL)?

  • Do these laptops overheat a lot?

  • NvME support ?

  • Anyone else getting 1299?
