  • 4GX is it MF910V or 910Z ?

Possibly dupe https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/367987 w/ different retailer.

Can't be dupe, this deal is 50 cents cheaper!

Those 4GX devices are f-ing rubbish.

Have one as my primary (temporary) internet connection. Gets 17mbit. Phone, tethered, in exact same spot, gets 80-100mbit. Not even a new phone - an S6.

They're shonky devices - they're designed to look like they've got a display in them but they don't.

Hmm looking at the photo above, it's a black rectangle. I wouldn't expect a display on it - if it had one, you can be sure they'd be proudly showing it off on the box!

Maybe it's just me - but a big, black shiny rectangle with icons down the side, rather than in the middle, made me think it'd have a screen (as many similar devices do!)

      • +2

yep I wouldn't expect a display on the V (V stands for "value" model), there is another 910 with LCD dispay, costs double and is never on special.

    • check what bands your modem connects on, my modem does band aggregation and clocks above 80mbit in the right locations.

  • Just in case it interests anyone, Coles has the 4GX HD at ½ price - $64.50.

Out of pure curiosity why do people use these instead of their phone? Your phone, esp if it's a flagship, will already far exceed this device's capability.

If you're concerned about battery life usb tether it.

For me - largely, for the ability to have my Google Home and Chromecast on the same network as the device I'm casting from.

It's only temporary until Telstra hook up my cable though!

Personally, I used it when we’re holiday as a hotspot for the family, at home it sats in the car as a mobile WiFi to keep everyone happy on our share data .

    • +1

Ah right, both good reasons I guess! My hotspot only serves a pretty mundane use as my laptop's connection on the train commute.

@picklewizard if that's HFC NBN enjoy your inferior speeds, we switched one of our business sites from HFC to HFC NBN and the speed DROPPED. I couldn't believe it. Fraudband for sure. Might want it keep that 4g connection around … Haha.

      • +2

        Fortunately I'm on pre-NBN HFC!

        • +1

          Yay!

        • Hey picklewizard
Just about to move to a new house that is supposed to have HFC NBN connectivity up shortly.. I believe this is also 'pre NBN hfc' as well. Been doing fair bit of research in to NBN style, with relevance to what i believe the new house will offer.. can you clarify what you mean in your post, for my interest?
          Thanks!

        • @swampson: HFC to my property is delivered by Telstra (or Optus, both service the area but the latter I've heard nothing good about).

It's my understanding that NBN is offered over a lower frequency spectrum than Telstra broadband and that hasn't performed to expectations.

most phones now have sealed batteries, so you want to prolong the life of that phone battery, plus the phone runs hot, so not a 24x7 solution when on holidays.

Even with USB tethering it runs hot, and some circuit works by charging the battery, and battery drives the phone to ensure stable DC voltages regardless of quality of the charger.

    • +1

Good for overseas holidays if you unlock them. All phones and tablets have internet just shop for a decent pre paid with good data.

  • Also be careful as some models are dual band and others single

  • plenty of stock left at parramatta westfield. picked it up for a car wifi unit and does the job well.

this is still active - just picked one of the "Telstra 4gx Wi-Fi" (ZTE MF910V) up at Woolworths, Town Hall in Sydney for $29
