These use a hybrid dual sim so if you want to use 2 sims you can't use an SD card

    • +4

Not too many phones remaining these days that do the whole suite of dual SIM plus microSD, but yes still a good reminder.

    • that is the case with most dual sim phones, hence if you want to use 2 sims, but the phones with as much memory as you will need eg 64GB.

  • Anyone using the phone can tell how is battery performance and camera

    • here's one test on battery. but keeping in mind the other flagships are 2-3 times the price. this is great specifications for the price.

      • Cool thank you

    • +1

I charge every 2 days normally.
Depends a lot on use. When i went away for the weekend, used camera a bit and some navigation, didn't get through the 2nd day.

Camera, I don't have anything to compare to, but I'd say average.

    • +2

Battery is great for a phone of this size, and will last well over a day with moderate usage.
Can even stretch to 2 days if only light usage.

Camera on the other hand is mediocre, probably a bit above your general mid-end phones.
It will get the job done, but doesnt really stand very well against most current flagships.
HMD has been looking to update the camera app for a while now, but until then dont expect too much on the camera front.

    • If you plan on main the Nokia 8's camera, I would recommend a different phone until Nokia releases Pro Camera app. The built-in camera app has focusing & stability issues on my side. Like how others disappointingly mentioned, there other phones around this price range that has better cameras

I use the GoogleCamera-Pixel2Mod & Open Camera to get around my broken nokia camera software issue.

Other then that, the phone is awesome but I would highly recommend to avoid DWI because I got DOA Nokia 8 polished copper (Arab version) from them last Christmas :'(

      • Which one would you recommend under 500 budget i like xiaomi mi note 3 and its camera reviews are good also just hate the fact that it doesnt have 3.5mm jack i love my g6 but its front camera is like a camera from 2011

        • -1

Xiaomi mi A1. Great updates, USB C, similar camera all for under $300.

Is it worth the upgrade from my Nokia N97?

    • +4

N97, you’re joking right? Yes, this ten-year younger phone is better than the N97.

      • No joke. I still use my N97. Albeit as an alarm :p

        • Ha, they were always reliable for that.

My favourite Nokia from that era was the E71. Lastest forever on a charge and great keyboard.

Won't match with your dreamcast though.

    • No point, oldskool = koolskool. ;)

    • I'd hold out, there are new models coming out next year.

  • +1

    Does it come with Snake?

  • -4

Shame it's only 4GB… can't compare with mi mix 2

  • Is that Band 28 or The US version of LTE700? It comes from Hong Kong & just says 700Mhz…

  • +1

Happy with my Nokia 5 (~$230 or so), however the security updates have stopped recently. Also the phone was to get Android Oreo but who knows, all quiet on that front.

    • +2

It's coming to the 3, 5 and 6 shortly. The roll out has been going in waves apparently and they're bundling the security and the Oreo update together

      Source: https://www.androidcentral.com/stable-oreo-update-now-rollin…

      • +1

Yeah… That was almost 2 months ago. I've enrolled to the beta program as well but so far… Nothing. When I first got the phone I was surprised by the update frequency but since Jan that's it. No complaints really but it's been a long time coming "any day now".

        • Did you get your phone outright?

        • +1
        • +1

@decr: The phone got Oreo in quite a few countries over the last month and on the xda forums people are trying to go back to Nougat, so I'm guessing they might've halted updates for quality control but I'm not sure.

    • My dad's Nokia 6 is stuck on Jan 2018 too.

    • My 8 has had Oreo for a while

  • Great specs, and good price

  • Great specs, solid build, a clean Android build and fast updates and a respected brand. The only thing it doesn't have really is a 18:9 screen, if that doesn't worry you this is a great phone.

    • +1

Wait since when did 18:9 become a pro?

      • +1

Its all about the bezels, bout the bezels, bout the bezels.

  • Great phone.
I'm personally waiting for the Sirocco.

    • +1

Hah - I hope it will be better than my Nokia 8800 Sirocco. As an iPhone user I must say that this phone looks prettty good and it’s a great price.

  • +1

I went from an iPhone 6S Plus to this… and I won't be going back.

I LOVE this phone, it's taking me a while to get my head around Android but you will not be disappointed. The screen is GORGEOUS!

  • Does anyone know if both SIM work on 4G simultaneously?
    Thanks

    • I don't think so. I haven't tried it myself.

"This flagship handset comes with two SIM card slots Dual SIM Standby (One 3G/4G SIM and One 2G SIM)…"
      Source: https://buymobile.com.au/products/nokia-8-dual-sim-64gb-4g-l…

    • +1

      It can't

Note: On dual SIM capable devices, both SIM1 and SIM2 slots support 4G networks. However, if your SIM1 and SIM2 are both LTE SIM cards, the primary SIM supports 4G/3G/2G networks, while the secondary SIM can only support 3G/2G. For more information on your SIM cards, contact your service provider
      https://www.nokia.com/en_us/phones/support/nokia-6-user-guid…

      • I didn't know this. Thanks. I thought it was just the coverage causing it.

        • +1

It's not the coverage. It's actually the Snapdragon chips, there aren't any that have a modem which can do 4G on both sims at the same time

      • Thank you. Do you know if this will do 4G/3G simultaneously or 4G/2G like most?

        • As Nokia say the primary SIM supports 4G/3G/2G networks, while the secondary SIM can only support 3G/2G then I think you will get 4G/3G simultaneously.

As 2G is being shut down around the world I don't think new chips do 4G/2G as it would be useless.

  • AMA I have the Nokia 8.
There is no unlocked bootloader or root available for this phone at this point, however Nokia are looking into it… since late last year.

    • If you don't mind me asking:

If you play mobile games, how is the gaming capability of the phone in practice?

Heard pretty mixed things about the camera - I read an article saying it's good for general use, it loses in darker areas and in the detail of the image itself. How has your experience been with the camera?

      Thanks mate!

      • +1

Like some have already mentioned, the phone is very smooth and responsive in general.
As you might already know it has the SD835 CPU and 4GB RAM but the phone is also 99% stock Android so there isn't anything unnecessary in the background slowing it down. Games like Pokemon Go, Ingress, Pinball 5 and Pokemon Revolution have worked flawlessly for me. The 1% is Nokia's camera app which is like you said, good for general use but poor in darker areas. The XDA community for Nokia 8 isn't very big for now but they do discuss a lot about tweaking the camera link to XDA Nokia 8.

Edit. I would also like to add that Nokia are looking into replacing or improving the camera app.

I came from a Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and I'm happy with my Nokia 8. A price worthy Finish, European phone for me.

        • +1

Cheers mate, glad to hear that. Thanks for the reply.

      • +1

        I have a Aus Nokia 8 (TA-1012).

Personally dont game much, but gaming capability should be top notch, as with all Snapdragon 835 Phones.
Theoretical it may even have an edge on other flagships, due to a bare Android operating system.
As Ragoon mentioned, the phone is extremely smooth and responsive to use, and generally will not struggle with majority of tasks.

As for the camera, yes it is almost useless in lowlight (because in default photo mode it will hunt for a good 5 seconds for focus).
I found if you must snap pics, try using manual mode, it'll focus as normal (but is PITA because you have to change it everytime you open camera).
Also in terms of picture quality, its about what you would expect in a mid-end phone (if not slightly better), but definitely not flagship level.
Also on the camera, one thing I had recently is the "camera vibrate" phenomenon (may have started due to multiple drops). A little bit annoying, but give it a shake and all goes back to normal (Possibly something knocked out of place in the camera module?).

As for unlocking bootloader/root, I highly doubt Nokia will ever make it available, as even some other big companies have stopped making it available.
I wish they would though, and also release factory images like Nexus/Pixel :(

All-in-all i feel this phone is just for HMD/Nokia to get their bearings, test market and self capabilities etc. So dont expect too much more then a fairly barebones flagship performance phone with an awesome build, great screen, and an awesome price tag to round things off.

Edit: Almost forgot, NFC placement on this phone is horrible. You will definitely struggle to use passive NFC tags (but cards are ok once you know the location). Active NFC like eftpos machines are ok once you learn the location (make sure you try at Coles/Woolies first so you dont make a fool of yourself ;P)

        • Thanks for the detailed information. I rarely use NFC but I'll definitely keep that in mind!

    • What's the OS like? Bloaty or close to stock android?

      • +1

99% stock android. 1% is Nokia's camera app.

DWI is pretty terrible though, I would avoid. I've had to deal with them for warranty, took over a month and many messages just to get a response from them. And then they denied warranty for an issue that the manufacturer acknowledged as a known fault (cracked part). Didn't even consider it, and I had to go around them to try to get it fixed up directly from the manufacturer. End up spending many months with a broken phone and extra hassle for what should have been a fairly simple issue.

    • +1

100% agree with you…DO NOT BUY from DW…i had a problem with my lg g6 and after 2 months of trying to get them to reply they determined from the photo i sent them that the fault us due to physical damage ! They are so ridiculous that you wont believe they are real and not having fun with you !

    • Did you report them to the ACCC?

My experience with DWI is that they always have good pricing and ship incredibly quickly. Never had to do a warranty return though.

      • +1

Yes and ACCC is to protect you from Australian businesses not some online retailer.

    • I had warranty work done for a lens, no great drama, no cost.

Bought a few things from them.

    • Yeah, I got broken Nokia 8 Polished Copper from DWI for last Christmas that was Arab version. It had broken headphone jack & dead pixel in the middle. Unfortunately, this caused inconveniences for my plans as my ASUS Zenphone 3 I got from DWI 2016 had dead rear camera right after warranty finished. Thankfully, I got my $$$ after an month later when I brought it.

Well it's nice that they picked the DOA nokia 8 but honestly you're much better off with a ebay reseller that makes you send the phone to Sydney address to forward it to Hong Kong in my experience if you must get international stock as there isn't AU stock of Nokia 8 Polished Copper

this one is 499.99, TA-1052,dual sim. I got one just 474.99 (ebay 25 bucks discount), shiped from Taiwan by DHL

Buying from DW is no different to buying from someone in gumtree who has just became member with fake contact details…deals from DW should have been banned from OZBARGIN long time ago

    • I've bought heaps, no problems.

      Mobile phones
      Compact camera
      Lens
      Photo accessories

        • Ah… Facebook. The ultimate source of truth

        • @bmerigan: you seem trying too hard to defend DW Digital ! if you are affiliated with them pass it to them that they suck ! if not then let it pass and have the warnings be heard by potential buyers …you had good experience with them ..cool story .some did not !!

        • @dondiego: just providing balanced reporting.
I've personally had 5 good purchasing experiences and 1 good warranty experience. How many bad experiences have you personally had?

  • Buying from HongKong like I did? Get yourself a Blitzwolf Quick Charge 3 charger as well. Using the supplied travel adapter sucks.

  • If you want to avoid DWI try eGlobal for $437.40

    • +3

eGlobal and DWI are the same company.

      • figures! :)
