Tabasco Sauce 1 US Gallon (3.8l) $19.97 at Costco (Membership Required) - Originally $69.99

1420

Okay so what are you going to do with 3.8L of genuine Tabasco Sauce?

No, who'd ask that? This is ozbargain. Buy now, worry later. I figure I go through one of the large (200ml) bottles per year, so this gives me enough for 19 years.

And it's a bargain.

If you've been in a box and don't know what Tabasco Sauce is, this from their website:

Since 1868, TABASCO® brand Original Red Sauce has been handcrafted with just three ingredients: aged red peppers, Avery Island salt and distilled vinegar. This simple recipe produces a unique pungent flavor that works with just about any cuisine. Gluten free, with zero calories and less sodium than other pepper sauces, Original Red is sold in over 180 countries and territories worldwide.

This was at Costco Marsden Park. There were about 3 bottles left after I purchased mine. Not sure if it's at any other Costco store.

great…ive also been looking for a 19 year supply of tabasco sauce. sorted! :D

    • +6

You'll be laughing when the zombie apocalypse comes, well the first 19 years before you run out of Tabasco.

      • +13

And when the zombies do break in, they'll probably be quite grateful that you laid on enough Tabasco for them to be able to douse you and your entire family in it before they chow down :D

        • No it's zero calories, you'll starve anyways.

    • +8

I think a small bottle lasts 19 years.

  • +2

Did you notice if there's a 'Use By' date on the packaging?

    • +4

      That's a spicy meatball!

Tabasco/hot sauce doesn't "go off" does it, I've had lots of hot sauce past it's use by day and it's been fine - just like Vegemite :)

Top tip: Hot sauce is awesome on pasta

      • +7

It doesn't "go off" per se but the oxidation makes it a nice red colour to the murky brown

      • +15

Tabasco/hot sauce doesn't "go off" does it, I've had lots of hot sauce past it's use by day and it's been fine - just like Vegemite :)

Invalid comparison: Vegemite is off from the beginning.

      • +1

        Wrong.

Australian law requires a use by date if it goes bad.

A best before date is the one you can go past. It's not as good to consume, but still safe

        Source: tertiary nutrition qualification

Why this would go bad? No idea. Don't know what's in it. Id trust the manufacturer not to be wrong though. They typically try to extend not reduce shelf life. Botchelism? :p

        • Source: tertiary nutrition qualification

I don't doubt you, but an appeal to authority isn't a valid source.

I'm interested to see a valid source from the Aus Gov. Do you have one?

        • +2

          @Scrooge McDuck:

This is the full story with the variations and details:

          http://www.foodstandards.gov.au/consumer/labelling/dates/Pag…

The full Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code is in the link at the bottom.

        • @justtoreply:

          Thank you!

        • +1

It has a lot of sodium and vinegar in manufacturing process, doesn’t become an issue with botchelism, just loses its color and taste with time, but is still edible, is better left in fridge, like tomato sauce should be.

        • +2

Claims to have tertiary nutrition qualification but can’t spell botulism correctly. Something doesn’t add up here.

        • @cityofsydney: yeh he sure botched that one up :P

        • Without looking, I would say ingredients are:

          Chilli
          Vinegar
          salt

Not much to go "off". :)

      • +1

No, it doesn't go 'off' but they do have a 'best' before date, which is usually around a year after it was manufactured, I've got about 10 litres of the 'Chipotle' version I imported from the States, it's amazingly delicious!

    • +3

It is already fermented. They salt chillies and leave them in Oak barrels for a year in the Louisiana heat. Then they add vinegar.

It is unlikely to go off via bacterial or fungal action, but might oxidise like opened red wine.

      • +2

Mmm, sauce that's been oxidising for 10 of the 19 years it's been open. Yum.

        • +2

          Read that in Homer's voice

      • +3

Except red win oxidises into vinegar, tabasco is already half vinegar.

      • Any onion or garlic at all in the recipe or ingredients list?

  • +14

Use by 19 Oct 2018. Great buy!

    • +16

That's about 4 teaspoons of sauce every day. Crikey.

      • +24

Two on the cereal and then 1 for lunch and dinner.

        • @ryanek, @jake cheers for the laughs 😂

      • +8

When you put it like that, it's actually not that much. I think I could get through that pretty easily.

        • +9

Skip a day and you have to do 8 tomorrow. Nah man, too much pressure.

      • +2

There's so much chili sauce math going on in this thread

    • +10

Now for a deal on Super Soakers!

      • +7

My eyes! The goggles do nothing!

    • +2

Lol that's like having a used by date on salt which is millions of years old.
Pro-tip: vinegar is a preservative; it doesn't go off.

      • +1

Yeah but it does become stronger if you keep it too long, however if it's in a fridge it shouldn't be too much if a problem.

        • When you say stronger… do you mean more chillier?

  • Which Costco?

    • -1

      All Costco’s there’s a sale on

      • Auburn NSW doesnt stock this for example.

        • +3

It’s okay there’s no bacon in Tabasco.

  • Anyone know if this is at Docklands (VIC)?

    • I'm a fan of tabasco, but even I wouldn't buy this big of a jug - no storage for it in my tiny pantry

  • +2

What to do with a gallon of Tobasco Sauce?

Only one thing you can do https://youtu.be/bKxJKXA1LxM

  • In the past 3 months I've been to Marsden Park costco 4 times and it has always been a bit higher than this price (usually around $24) Everytime the Mrs asks me if I want it and each time I tell her how it takes me a year to go through a small bottle.

Still tempted to get it just for the glass bottle. I've only ever seen it at Marsden Park though. Never seen it at Casula or Auburn.

    • Is 24$ the full price of the gallon of tabasco? If so is the expiry longer? Also thats so cheap compared to usa foods au

      • No idea on the price but that's the price I've always seen it at.

In regard to expiry, I have two bottles of Tabasco sauce (buffalo style and normal style) and neither has a used by or best before date.

Personally I know I've had a Tabasco sauce bottle sitting in the fridge for 5 years and it has still been good. Cupboard should be alright too as long as it doesn't get too hot or get direct sunlight.

  • +7

    hot deal!

  • +3

    Bloody Marys anyone?

  • +6

Looking forward to 19 years of chili-induced diarrhoea

    • +5

From Tabasco sauce? You might need to add a teaspoon of concrete to your huevos rancheros :p

  • +1

as much as i love tobasco i feel like i'd be sick of it by 1/4 way through the bottle

    • +8

You're not meant to drink it in one sitting!

      • +1

        Thanks for the tip.

      • +1

not MEANT to …but you can right?

  • +1

This is good but I prefer Franks Hot Sauce instead. It comes in 2 massive bottles @ Costco for about $15

    • How big is the franks hot sauce bottles

    • +2

Franks tastes good, but it's not hot enough.

      • +1

I agree, but that makes it more versatile. I love tabasco on my pastas and the like, but I can use Franks to marinade steaks, ribs, etc.

  • +10

Surely storing this much in the house is against the Geneva Convention?

    • +9

I think 3.8 L is just under the critical mass.

  • +1

Now time to bathe in sauce.

    • Put some on your genitals, I dare you.

  • Was $9.97 about a year ago at Costco Ringwood

    • And I don't think they stock it now. Otherwise, I'd get it.

  • A good deal (even if i won't be getting one), but most importantly entertaining thread.

  • +3

4 litre demijohns cost almost as much empty. Useful for small batch winemaking, though it would need a little bit (lot) of washing out first.

    • I'd hope that you're washing out your equipment pretty well anyway. Glass shouldn't hold much taste if you use a decent wash.

      • “Shouldn’t hold much taste” ever tried re-using a pickle jar for anything other than pickles? lol

  • Lunch sorted?

  • Can you buy half gallons of chipotle Tabasco at costco?

  • +3

    🌶️ hot deal

  • Good deal… Might just be a little difficult to pour

    • good deal if two people buy it and you decant it into a 2lt milk bottle

the 53c for 100ml is kind of depressing

colesworth want like $3 for 60ml or some shit?

  • +1

    Officeworks price match?

  • +1

Best hot sauce I have tried in my life.

I need dis but no access to costco or car :(

I wonder if I can ebay it lol.

    Coles and woolies is about $5.33 - $5.83 - $8.00 / 100ml

So this is ten times cheaper than usual small bottles.

    Nice.

Grabbed one of these at the docklands Costco a couple of years ago for $10. Probably the best purchase I've ever made from there. I've refilled one of the smaller bottles a couple of dozen times now and it's barely made a dent in the gallon.

I also drank a shot of it as part of a game of shot roulette and it gave me, by far, the worst and most persistent case of the hiccups I've ever had.

    • +4

Awesome, by the time you die your inheritance will be half a gallon of Tabasco sauce.

  • +1

Is membership $60? If you buy this you're almost there in savings… now just add one of those giant toilet roll packs and membership has paid for itself.
