Suntory Boss Iced Coffee 237ml/179ml Varieties $2 @ Coles

1470

This deal is back 8 weeks later.

My preference is the Double Espresso although I haven’t tried the Rainbow Mountain blend yet.

I was keeping an eye on the price as I'm heading to a weekend long music festival and this will be an easy get up and go.

  • @BradH13 Are these end of life? Context

    • +1

The Rainbow Mountain one is getting towards end of life, if not there already, not any of the others. I only have my rep at work's word to go on though.

  • +3

The double espresso goes hard yeah

  • +38

I really love these, but what makes them so wonderful in Japan is it costs me like 60-70c for one, I have a maximum of maybe 3 streets to walk down before I will find a vending machine and it encourages a 5-10 minute break from whatever I was doing. Here in Australia you have to find a servo, spend almost triple the amount with a dozen odd other options double the size for a dollar or so more.

Unfortunately they just don't make much sense in our country beyond the novelty.

    • +24

Same as the cost of alcohol in Japan… SUNTORY Strong Zero -196 Double 9% is like $11+ here, but they are like $2.50 in Japan. It's a joke, this country is a rort.

        • +22

Because the cost of things isn't the only reason to live in a particular country? What a silly question..

        • +7

Taxes on alcohol, taxes from councils raising, fees going up, cost of living up, wages stagnated, we aren't seeing money from companies raiding our countries natural resources like how Scandi countries do because politicians are in the pockets of big business.

This country IS a rort. But you can't fix it from another country.

          • +6

@TrafalgarSean: One man tried to fix it, tried to introduce a mining tax…. it was Rudd…. K. Rudd…. what happened to him? Got knifed in the back….

          • +6

@TrafalgarSean: Maybe - but it's also possible that the people of this country aren't very bright and fall for media propaganda. I can cite a few examples

Mining Tax - implemented by Labor. Media ran a scare campaign that all the jobs and industries would leave Aus, and so ppl voted Labor out and got the LNP in, who removed the tax.

Negative Gearing - Housing affordability is at crisis levels, largely in part due to negative gearing. People are screaming for reform on it. Someone tried to reform it in 2019, and again, the media ran a scare campaign and people ended up voting against their own interests.

Politicians have tried to do the right thing, and been burnt for it by our media. You can say they're in the pockets of big business, and I do agree to some degree. But they have also tried to do the right thing at times - we as voters have not supported them.

In summary, yes some blame on politicians, but more blame on us as voters.

          • @TrafalgarSean: It's not as simple as levying extra taxes on natural resources because they're making big profits. You need to consider the likelihood that mining companies take their capital and build mines elsewhere if you make taxes too high.

We tax mining companies here at rates comparable to global averages, so unless there's expert analysis that says we're for certain missing out by not taxing natural resources extra, I'd be inclined to let this issue slide.

Norway is not a good comparison, because their wealth is based on oil wealth. Oil is scarce - so the country that has the oil has the bargaining power to demand oil companies pay up relatively high rates of tax on extraction.

      • +4

The taxes are making you more healthy fine citizen 😉

      • +5

Price is actually closer to $1.50 in Japan if you buy from a supermarket. (140-something yen plus tax)
        They're also 500ml instead of 350ml.
        Australia — $11, 9%, 350ml = $4.42 per standard drink (10g alcohol)
        Japan - $1.65, 9%, 500ml = $0.46 per standard drink (10g alcohol)
        Almost 10 times the price.

        • You can get a 10 pack for $45 in Australia.

        • +1

I actually found the cans were about 140-160yen in the convenience stores but I could get them for around 50-70c AUD per can in the supermarkets in Osaka.

        • Lower sales volumes in Aus leading to lack of economies of scale, higher taxes, additional cost of air freight from Japan. It shouldn't be surprising that it's more expensive here than in Japan.

      • +2

no population to support volume selling.

    • I totally agree, but imo they do taste a lot better than most other iced coffees. I could be wrong, but I think the sugar content is a bit lower as well.

    • Well they don't make much sense if you ignore the fact they're just a nice cheap tasty ice coffee in a can. Love me a Boss, simple as.

      • They don't make much sense even if you take the product itself into account, thats what I am saying. I love these things and i am glad I can pick up a can when I am feeling nostalgic but as soon as you take literally any other aspect into consideration they don't make any sense in this market.

  • +3

i love these, kind of underrated among the aisles, do try the black

    • They're good when you can't get access to fresh grind but, at the end of the day, it's still canned coffee and it has a particular taste to boot. Still, it's convenience if you're caught sans caffeine!

  • +3

    This is good stuff

@jv have you seen this persons display picture

    • +4

      Rent free

    • +1

Congrats, you’re the first to mention it. Although I haven’t been posting many deals since changing it a few months ago. Inspired by the OzBargain rule of not allowing display pics that are attempting to imitate others.

  • +7

Coffee snob here. These are good.

  • -1

People consistently overrate these cos of the Japanese link. They're overly watery but at least they aren't sickly sweet. A tier above the sugared up, milky alternatives like Dare…

    • +7

Anyone who expects these to be like a real cup of barista coffee are set up to be disappointed. That's not what they're intended to be and everyone who loves them knows this. Just like how everyone knows Dare is the coffee flavoured milkshake.

Plenty of good canned coffee brands around. Not just Boss. Thanks to Suntory AU they have good availability here.

    • +4

      Dare is bottled diabetes.

    • +2

Think you need to reset expectations really. It's not going to be as good as a good barista made coffee. I like to keep these in the fridge for days when i'm too busy to make my own proper coffee. They're not bad, and I prefer them over a maccas coffee.

    • +1

It also seems difficult to be able to buy local packaged iced coffee in anything other than enormous bottles.

I don't need nor can my body handle two thirds of a litre of milk in one sitting.

  • +5

    zoomies after the double esspresso

  • Wife loves the long black, thanks OP

    • +14

      Not your skinny latte?

  • +1

I still can't bring myself to spend money on the miniscule Rainbow can. At two bucks maybe I'll try it. That's like, a buck a sip, I guess.

    • +4

Its the only thing I have bought here knowing I am actively getting scammed. Its legitimately two average mouthfuls and its done. I only ever buy to close my eyes and pretend I am in the Japan office instead of the Sydney one.

      • I tried one back-to-back with a Latte can and it is nicer than the latte.

I tried the Long Black for the first time too and it'd be great if they made one like that with no sugar, but with milk. I don't like sugar in my real coffee and I'm not a huge fan of black coffee either, but the black one is the only one without sugar in it.

        • Yeah you know the utlimate frustration, they have every thing you want over in Japan, they have milk coffee without sugar, in fact they were my go to because taking the sugar out they actually tasted really damn good it surprised me quite a bit, you actually had somewhat of a coffee taste that was enjoyable rather than just loaded with sugar to try and get caffeine into your system lmfao.

          • @doobey1231: Yeah, they're all too sweet except for the long black — especially the double espresso.
I still think Hunt & Brew is the best iced coffee over here, though it's not as good as it used to be. They made it weaker a while back, unfortunately.

    • If you mainly drink espresso/short black, long black or macs, then this little rainbow special edition can won't hit the spot. Too mild and too sweet (sugar). Nothing memorable about it to justify it's premium in their range. Tried it once, and regretted the purchase. Had to go and grab another coffee straight after.

      • FWIW its not actually a premium option, the packaging looks like that only because all of the canned coffee over there looks like that, its pretty standard amongst their range. There are vastly better options, you can find some in Asian marts but it all still pales in comparison to whats over there.

  • Rainbow Mountain blend is good. also agree with OzB constituents that Double Espresso is a winner!

  • Taste is great but would not want to take extra "ingredients" like artificial sweeteners 950 etc, better iced latte from local coffee shop in Aus, I know I know cost per cup is now nuts. (I had hard time finding in Japan… and when I did the cup cost me $9 kangaroo dollars..)

    • +3

      It's pronounced Dollaridoos

  • +1

Iced latte is awesome, not too sweet either like most RTD iced coffees. 6g sugar 😎

  • Anyone know how to do an order of more than 12 of one type with Coles Online?

    • You'll have to go in I think as they most likely won't even have that many. However if you go in you can take them out of the 4 packs as they have individual barcodes same SKU

  • +1

I can't imagine Suntory boss having too much trouble with the ladies big handsome mustachioed hunk that he is
