Free Bonus 5GB Mobile Data Per Month for Eligible Telstra Mobile Customers

3350

Happened to come across this last night. If you live chat with a sales representative they will be able to apply the bonus 5gb data.

Including my current plan and added bonus data, I'm now sitting at a nice 31GB/mth paying only $10!

"Bonus Data – Just to say Thanks"

We are giving you an additional 5GB of data, every month for no added cost – until you sign up to a new mobile plan. The offer will be added within the next few days and you don’t have to do anything.

There are no charges involved, we just want to thank you for being a loyal customer. You may still have some questions which may be answered below.

Q. Does the 5GB Bonus data allowance cost anything? Is there a catch?
A. No. We are giving you the 5GB allowance for free every month to thank you for being a loyal customer and to demonstrate that we value you as a customer.

Q. How do I know when the 5GB Bonus data has been applied?
A. You will receive an SMS to advise you of your new monthly allowance once that the bonus data has been successfully added on to your account.

Q. Will the 5GB Bonus data show in My Account or 24x7?
A. Yes. The 5GB Bonus Data will be reflected in your monthly total data allowance in the My Account & 24x7.

Q. Will it show on my bill?
A. The 5GB Bonus data will appear on the bill as Bonus Data Allowance – 5GB.

Q. Can I share the 5GB Bonus data allowance with other services on my account?
A. Yes. If you are on a plan that enables your data to be shared between devices, the 5GB allowance will contribute to the total bucket of data that can be shared across eligible services on your account.

Q. How long does the 5GB Bonus data allowance stay on my service?
A. You will receive 5GB Bonus data every month to use in that month, unless you decide to do any of the following:

move to a Data Share SIM
move to a pre-paid service
move to a new plan, or
disconnect your service.

Any unused data allowance expires at the end of each billing month.

Q. What if I exceed my included plan allowance as well as the bonus 5GB? What charges apply?
A. If you use your plan allowance plus the bonus 5GB in a month, extra data will be automatically added in 1GB blocks for $10 to use in that month.

Q. Can the Bonus 5GB Bonus data allowance be used outside of Australia?
A. No, your plan allowance and the bonus 5GB data is only for use in Australia.

Mod: As per comments, deal is targeted/invitation only. See here and other comments for more details and other user experiences. You will need to initiate live chat to ask if you are eligible.

      • I spoke to live chat and they said 5gb overall, not per service.

I hope you're right tho, we have 4 numbers, 20gb would be awesome!

        • You can get 5gb per number. See which one it applies to first then speak to another rep to apply it to the other number :)

    • +1

      Confirming I got 15GB extra….for 3 phone numbers!

  • Does this apply to mobile broadband plans?

    • Not sure but doesn't hurt to ask..

  • +3

Chat reps are so useless lmao

    • -6

I had to deal with those apes just yesterday so in a way I'm glad others are feeling my pain.

    • +2

They must have switched from Filipino to Indian chat reps last year. Before that I used to always get Filipinos who were so nice and really helpful. Soon after they changed to Indian reps who were less nice and not so helpful.

  • I just tried claiming this through live chat and got denied, I was told by Pallavi that he needed proof of me receiving an SMS or Email with this offer :(

    • Hahaha - wow some live chat reps are terrible!! Just send them the original link and ask them to apply it for you. If they don't have them call you to speak to someone who knows what they're doing..

      • Haha I was surprised I got denied so hard :( I started off the live chat by providing the link! I'll try again later.. I asked what would make me eligible to be a "loyal customer" as I've been with Telstra for approx 10 years, and his reply was "Surely you'll get the SMS or email then"

        • The SMS comes AFTER they apply it.. which comes AFTER you have to ask them to apply it.. lol. They are USELESS!! Good luck next time you try!

  • +2

Was initially put on with Codi - the bot, and then got transferred to Jyoti. Which made me a little less confident as that sounded more bot-like than Codi.

  • This webpage has been around for awhile. About 6 months ago i got a text for telstra saying 5Gb will be added and with the above link.

    • +1

Yes it is pretty old but as you can see, it doesn't look like they applied it to people's accounts like it states. Need to chat to a rep in order to get it applied.

      • +1

I got it back then automatically as did my wife and a friend who is with Telstra. I’m wondering if they’d apply a further 5GB if we asked now.

        • +1

          Doesn't hurt to ask :)

    • yep, There's a Whirlpool thread back in July
      https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2645562

  • Does anyone have names of Reps that applied the 5gb? I also got Sangita who said it was an automatic process. I’d rather try rep roulette again to get this properly confirmed.

    • Sonal was the one who applied it for me.

      • I got Kunal from billing, he was nice and polite. Absolute champ

  • "…the eligibility criteria is [a Telstra customer] for more than 2 years…." ~ Manish, Telstra 24x7 chat (1.20pm AEDT 24Feb18)

    • Don't take that as gospel. Another person I know has been with them less than 12months and got this deal. The reps will say anything and you just move onto to someone who know's what they are doing and will apply it..

      • The quote marks were left there for a reason ;-)

        • +1

hahaha - yeah I knew what you were saying.. just didn't want others thinking they'd miss out.

        • @Tuhan: ;-)

  • You can add Aditya and Pratik to the list of chat consultants who have no idea what they're doing.

    • -2

and pooji… should have known by the name..

  • Wonder if I’ll get it again. Myself, a friend and my wife all got 5GB bumps in around October last year. Didn’t have to apply, was automatic.

    • +3

Yes you should. I have had bonus data applied (starting out at 5gb in my original plan) and now have 31gb!

      • +2

They said they'd apply it to our two plans. Takes our combined data to 47GB (paying $90 for the combined services) :)

  • +1

marialina applied mine for me straight away.

i'm now on 17gb for $30/mo, trying to get a bit more discount applied to bring it down to $25

    • +1

Good job! It helps if you have had issues or can complain about something which gives them incentive to give you a discount /mth

      • How does one get such discounts? I'm on the $40 a month go plan, 5gb of data, $1000 worth of calls - Literally every time I try on chat I get nothing. They wont offer me anything, any discounts etc. So frustrating

        • +1

Issues - mobile drop outs, black spots, being told one thing and then being told something completely different, etc… Ultimately you be polite, but stand your ground on wanting, 'compensation' and if they won't you ask to speak to a supervisor/case manager… That's what I have done. My current bill is still $700 in credit because of this. I think I have paid only one mobile bill in the last 3-4yrs..

        • +1

          @Tuhan:

hahaha mate you have too much time on your hands to be talking to telstra 24x7 all the time! i try every time they increase the data plans or optus etc increase them, im happy with my deal right now tho

        • +2

          @sktzr:

haha - yeah you're probably right! But it has paid off for me :)

      • +1

yeah i just play the 'loyal customer' card everytime i've chat to them, i think im on the $60 plan paying $30.

been with them for a little over a year :P

        • +1

Nice work! I love seeing others get good deals!!

        • +4

          @Tuhan:

yep, they put on another $10 monthly credit,

          $20 for 17gb now :)

        • +2

          @sktzr:

          :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D Well done!!

        • @sktzr:

How did you get the $10 credit? Are you on the same plan as Tuhan?

I'm BYO $70 plan and got $30 credit so it's $40 for unlimited calls and 12GB/month. No matter how many times I've contacted Telstra I could never get a discount on $40. It's so frustrating!

        • @nongshim:

~2 years ago i got the MX 50 plan for $10 (online only) anyone could of done that. i think it was 5gb but you could get a bonus gig or something. Then half way thru my plan i asked for more data so they gave me another 2gb or so.

Then my contract lapsed, and optus etc had 15gb for $30-40 i spoke to a few different telstra reps and managed to get my $40 plan to $30 and a few more gig.
Few months ago i got another few gig put on to make it 12 gb. Then today i just said i've been a loyal customer and i want that 5gb bonus and if its possible to get some more credit.

          so voila, $20 a month with 17gb.

        • @sktzr:

So basically all you had to do was "ask" for some extra credit and the Telstra rep gave you $10 just like that? Sounds so easy. I've spoken to countless reps and they won't budge… saying $40/month is the best they can do. Even taking into consideration I've been with Telstra for 8 years. I guess I'll just have to keep on trying. Probably the luck of the rep you get too.

      • +1

This only works if they haven't already maxed out discounts compensating for legitimate billing mistakes.

For reference, rep claimed max system lets them give is $20 x2.

  • chat operator very vague yet familiar enough to call me "Mate"

    • +2

Hahaha - I'd start getting worried if they call you 'love' or 'darling'…

  • Was told I have been given extra 5GB previously signing up to the BYO plan. Would've been nice to have an extra 5 GB but barely use up my current allowance anyway!

    • +1

I was given an extra 5gb here and 5gb there over the last 12months including when I signed up to my original BYO plan (was given a bonus 5gb in the beginning) but still managed to get this added as well.

      • +1

Maybe I should try again and hopefully get a nicer rep, or has Telstra caught on and being stricter with this offer?

        • Yeah try again til you get someone who will do it. There are plenty of good reps out there but a lot of useless ones too…

  • +1

Just got rejected by Live Chat (guy called Damien) as he said my existing 5GB bonus that I have is the same offer.

For reference, I signed up to the F&F $59 plan back in November (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/342769) and got a sales rep to add 5GB back then, which made it 20GB for $59.

Had a feeling they would do that as it shows up on my bill saying 'bonus 5GB data'.

    • +1

Look at my linked comment above (near the beginning posts) - You'll see I have a multiple bonuses applied each month. Don't let them tell you they can't apply another 5gb cause they can.

    • i have the same plan ($59 family and friends) and managed to get 2x 5gb bonus data so now get 25gb per month.

  • Im on telstra and so is my partner, can I share my data with her?

    • +1

Yes - you just need to be on the same bill. Then you ask them to make your data shared between the two mobile numbers.

  • Abhijit told me "This offer is for telstra loyal customer,If you got message related to the same then you will definitely get that within 48 hrs."

  • +1

    Worked for me:

    VAIBHAV: Hello1
    Jason: Hello
VAIBHAV: You are asking about 5 GB bonus data, correct?
Jason: I'm looking to take advantage of the bonus data offer
    Jason: https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans-and-rates/bon…
    Jason: Yes, it's 5gb
    VAIBHAV: Yes, that's correct.
It will get added into your my account and you will also get email confirmation for this.
    Jason: Excellent thank you
VAIBHAV: You will receive an SMS to advise you of your new monthly allowance once that the bonus data has been successfully added on to your account.
VAIBHAV: You're Welcome, Is there anything else I can assist you with today?

Jason: That's all, thank you :)

"Thank you for chatting us regarding this. Yes that's right. We're actually receiving a lot of chats regarding the 5GB bonus data.
Our customers say that this link was posted in some of the Australian forums like OzBargain.

I just want to set your expectation that the 5GB bonus data is an invitational offer only. Customers must receive an SMS notification first before they can get the offer."

To all the retards out there thanks for ruining it and mentioning ozbargin. Jesus Christ

    • +1

That sucks!! I never received any SMS notification. My Brother came across it via the website and then got all of us who i know on Telstra post-paid plans to get it. I'm glad I got on it before it became ozbargained… However, if you really want it, just go to a different telstra rep.. Eventually you will get someone who will apply it.

      • You already have the extra data active?

        • +1

Yes - applied instantly and received an SMS confirming and showing up on my telstra account

    • Someone do us a solid and post the text message you received, they ask you to quote it. Legendary if you can!!!

      • +3

telstra text message received "Just to say thanks, were giving you an extra 5GB of data for no added cost, every month - until you sign up to a new mobile plan. The best part? You don't have to do anything. We'll send you an SMS by 10 October, telling you the bonus data has been added and your new monthly allowance.
Go to http://telstra.com/bonus5gb for more info."

        • We'll send you an SMS by 10 October

          What the shit?

    • Although it helps not to have mentioned OzB but a simple google search would have exposed this thread regardless…
Not saying I've done it, but I think OzB has made reputation in recent years.

    • FYI, whilst you can't discount idiots are telling Telstra reps they've seen it on OzB, any web statistics that Telstra do will also show a large amount of traffic coming from this site. Even if everyone kept quiet about it, Telstra would have easily been able to see where everyone was getting their information from - though granted, the individual rep would not have that information on hand.

  • Just chatted with Jyoti who said that it would be automatically applied and that I wouldn’t need to do anything. So I will wait and see if I get it in the next few days.

  • +1

I successfully added it to both mobile numbers listed on my account (had to live chat to different people), but both times it only added 4GB to the account, not 5GB. It went from a joint 15GB to 19GB, then to 23GB. Anyone else have a similar result? Is this normal? Thanks

  • +2

Easiest way to see if you can get it is to log into your my telstra account on your phone or pc and look for the bonus data added tag like in the link provided https://prntscr.com/iizudi

Then go onto chat and get it added, this message appears on your account at random times, keep refreshing the page until you can get a screen shot of it and then go onto chat.

It has been appearing on my account for the last 2 years showing randomly every time i log on, I have managed to get it added three times via chat over that time using this method.

Please note it has NEVER been automatically added like they say in chat.

    • Could it be that the bonus data is only offer to people with multiple service?

  • +2

Diksha did it for me. Applied 5GB bonus.

    • +1

      Top job Diksha!

    • Was it applied instantly or over a period of time?

  • Jiya at 14:17, Feb 24:
    Jiya
I've checked and found that your number is eligible for this you will get the 5Gb bonus data in your account.

  • Got told it would be 4-5 days before I actually get it
Jiya said it needs to be manually added.

    • +1

Mine was added on the spot, received a confirmation sms before I even closed the chat window.

  • +2

Persistence pays off - just got my plan increased by 5GB to 25GB. Just have to find the right staff member. Was told it would be applied in the next few days and I mentioned that I wanted to ensure it was applied now. So they did it.

    • +1

Well done!! That's what I like to hear :)

    • Don't you mean 5gb to 10gb? How did you get them to increase your data by 15gb?

      • Sorry - was on 20gb. Am on the $49 plan from JB HiFi.

        • +1

Ah, I misread your comment. That makes more sense!

  • I have tried 4 so far without luck.

Melodi, Komal, Jerome and Angelica all say no…

    I will keep trying.

  • +1

I had Sanjay. No help. Very vague and said it will be Automatically applies. I asked the eligibility criteria and he said there wasn’t one and it’s just random. I asked if he could check my account to see if I was one of them. He said there is no way to tell -.-

  • +1

Thanks OP. Been with Telstra on a 12 month SIM only plan since October and they confirmed the data will be credited within the next 24 hours.

  • I usually have good experiences with Telstra chat. Today, however, I spoke to someone who seemed to be answering different questions to what I was asking.

  • -1

Talking to Tesltra chat, 'It is only for selected lucky people'… I have been on a Telstra plan for 5+ years!!! but out of 'good will' will give me 2gb to my plan. What the hell? dont honor the promotion then try to say out of the goodness that you will give me something less than what im meant to get. DATA DONT COST YOU ANYTHING TELSTRA! if it werent for recpetion needs i would be rid of this scummy proivder

    • Data does cost. Spectrum, bandwidth, backhaul, etc isn't free.

  • Just get a new plan guys.

  • They told me that it will be added automatically over the next few days and an SMS will be sent to notify customers of the increase in data. Thanks OP.

    • I just got the same - thanks for being loyal, will get SMS notifying of the 5 GB increase. We'll see…

      • +1

Check your account. You can see it added. Mine already added.

  • +1

Hmm no luck so far. The rep didn’t apply it for me, but I asked them to confirm it would be applied to my account. They responded it would definitely be added to my account in 24 hours. I took a screenshot and I’ll use that in 24 hours to say “I was promised this and it hasn’t appeared”. Hope that works!

  • +1

Michael: Hello Shraddha, I hope you are having a good day. As a multi-year loyal Telstra customer, I'm enquiring about getting the 5 GB bonus data please: https://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/plans-and-rates/bon…
Shraddha: I am doing well thank you.
    Shraddha:
We are giving you an additional 5GB of data, every month for no added cost – until you sign up to a new mobile plan. The offer will be added within the next few days and you don’t have to do anything

    Shraddha:
There are no charges involved, we just want to thank you for being a loyal customer.

    Shraddha:
You will receive an SMS to advise you of your new monthly allowance once that the bonus data has been successfully added on to your account.

    Michael: ok thank you
Michael: is there anything else I need to do now to confirm it?
    Shraddha:
NO, your details are saved with telstra so it will be added, you do nothave to worry at all.

  • Just spoke with Ragini and got 5gb bonus for both Telstra numbers with a confirmation and ref number. Thanks o.o.

  • does this STACK for people who already got +5GB bonus on sign up plans

  • -2

Spoke with a consultant named Narendra - really really unhelpful. Told me the bonus was applied randomly which is extremely misleading based on the website. Wouldn't let me speak with a manager. Lodged complaint with TIO.

  • Judith said NO :(
