What's the purpose of this cable? It's only 10cm long…Wouldn't it be easier to plug the HDMI cable directly into the port?

You get wear and tear on a 76 cent cable, not a port built into a $150 - $5000 TV. You also get a "stand-off" where the only spare HDMI port is too close to the monitor body for an accessory, and you don't want to reprogram your remote/parent/grandparent as to what port is attached to what.

      • Why the hell are you constantly unplugging your HDMI?

Because I test and configure things for other people. I also move laptops between sites and rooms.

    • Who knows. Maybe that 10cm could make a difference.

    • Only potential use I can think of is if you are using it to connect some sort of dongle or adapter, so that they are not connected directly to the TV/device (to prevent leverage on the hdmi port).

Or, if your HDMI cable is 10cm short… :P

Edit: Actually, I thought of another use: if your monitor has an HDMI port on the bottom at the back, this would allow the port to be accessed more easily from the front to plug something in.

If your cable is 10 cm short of reaching its destination, then your have your purpose.

What I do is, if I need to keep changing devices, I keep the cable permanently connected to the TV and just swap the other end with whatever device. If you are moving one device between multiple TVs, I would keep the cable connected to that device and only remove it from the TV end.

There will still be wear and tear on one end no matter what, even if you use this "extension". Unless you are using the extension on both ends of all of your displays and all of your devices.

I keep the cable plugged into the monitor at all times. Only the other end gets swapped.

  • I can't understand the purpose of this cable unless your HDMI cable fell short by 10cm and you predicted that future issue and buy this cable now.

    • You get ports that are too close to the body of the monitor for some accessories that you don't want or need to be running a cable too - e.g, chromecasts and TV sticks.

    • May help for devices like Chromecasts which suffer from overheating or bad reception from being too close behind the tv. I know Chromecasts already come with a cable which look pretty mucht he same as this item.

      • Exactly. Chromecasts come with it in case the layout of the ports on the TV prevent the Chromecast from plugging in. That's where this can be useful. If you don't know why you need it, then you probably don't need it.

        • The original Chromecast that is. The 2 and Ultra have flexible HDMI connectors built in.

    • I bought one to replace the cable I was using to connect my Chromecast 1 to the back of my amp. Over time the amp had slid back and split the plastic on the cable that came with the Chromecast.

  • Good for vertical hdmi ports at tv rear, like sony use.
