Picked up the red 4 slice equivalent yesterday, wanting to match the kettle before it went outta stock.

  • +12

I don't get the science of this thing. The range starts from $20 to $200.
it's just two pieces of heating element with a timer.

    • +2

And you can toast over an open fire for free…..

Toasters are different when it comes to how well they toast.

Simply put things to look out for are

Toasting evenness and how well they toast each side
      Toasting consistency cycle after cycle

      • +8

        this guy toasts

      • How do you check those things? Just trust that since these toasters are really expensive they must do these things well??

        • Choice tests for these, and yes the higher the price does not always equal the higher the quality. This Toaster scored 70% overall. See Angrychickens post below for link

        • @RockyRaccoon:

Note that the highest rated one is 82% at almost twice the RRP.

You'd think toaster science would've been well done by now, or maybe it's just companies and marketing keeping the good stuff from us

    • +2

I empathise - some of the pricing is likely aspirational and more to do with the label, but some are also very well made to last while others are merely made. The fact the (admittedly fallible) Choice backs it probably means this one is ok…

      • +2

I can confirm DeLonghi is gold, we've had ours for 15 years and it's running and looking like new!

    • Its an ART .. toasting and toaster both :)

    • -1

A car is just a hunk of metal and four wheels as well.

      • +3

My failed experiences using the car and the radiator to make toast are not worth mentioning.

        • +3

          Mmm engine black eggs

    • +3

yeah it really must toast the bread.. removable crumb tray???!!! woahh maaaaadness :) :)

      • (jokes aside, the look of the toaster, how much you spent, how solid it feels, will all actually adjust the perceived taste of the toast.. and design does affect performance.. but I would rather read actual reviews to determine this rather than the sales pitch.)

    • +5

Tbh I think your correct. Paying $200 for a machine that does the same thing as a $20 machine is just madness. The perfect toast does not come from the toaster but the bread you put in to toast. As most toasters all heat and eject the bread at the same time.

      • +1

        Finally some senseful comment.
It's about the bread, not the toaster.

For $200 I would expect the toaster to be able to make a calligraphy art on the toast.

      • You'd think so but we've had toasters that cook inconsistently or cook cook one side more than the other.

    • Yes, the Delonghi may do a better job and it certainly looks a lot nicer than the $20 one, but that mark-up still seems hard to justify.

I wonder where the best bang-for-buck price point is - what do you have to pay to get a toaster that will do a good job for good length of time?

Recommended by Choice in April 2017.

Thank OP - after 20 years it's time to throw that old Breville fire hazard out.

Postage is $8 whether you go via their dedicated site or eBay - at least for feral Sydney…

    • yeah.. thanks for that mate :)

    • Thank you for posting the Choice report.

    • looks like the breville is better value.

      disclaimer: I hold shares :)

  • Great deal but wont let select 'pick up' for some reason?

    • no problem..
pickup is working.. do it slowly click pickup and wait for 10 seconds ..pickup option will appear ( bit slow when u toggle between delivery and pickup)

      • Cheers, still didn't work on Chrome but did work with Edge. :)

        • That's a first.

    • +1

I can't use pickup if I use Chrome to checkout. I have to use Microsoft Edge. Try that.

      • +1

heh, beat me by 'that' much. :)

  • How much is 4 slice?

  • I wonder how do you guys clean a toaster

    • +3

I can confirm from personal experience that full immersion is not the way to go…

    • +3

Take it outside, turn it upside down, shake it like hell

      • I like to take it out, wine and dine it then turn it upside down and gently rock back and forth. Once when I shook it (the toaster) like hell it died. Lucky I had a back up on hand.

  • +1

Do these leak crumbs from the bottom of the toaster? Our current 4 slice Sunbeam is such a mess when moving it cause spills crumbs all over the counter as you move it. I’ll jump on these if they’re don’t make a mess.

  • +1

No crumpet setting though. You'd think a toaster costing $200 would have this…

    • Block-quote No crumpet setting though. You'd think a toaster costing $200 would have

yep a must have for me —- a muffins setting

    • Yep, ordered one this morning and stupidly made the assumption that it would a crumpet setting.

Oh well - looks like it will be burnt crumpets for me

      • +1

Life is too short to live with burnt crumpets for years on end.

      • +1

Can't you just set the dial to right temp? Like '4' for examples or does it have to have 'crumpet' written on it?

        • +2

The 'Crumpet' function turns down one side of the cooking element.

This is handy as the bottom of a crumpet cooks a lot quicker than the top of it.

        • +1

@lovesabargain77: Oh right, I didn't know that. Cheers (explains why my crumpets always have burned bottoms. :) ) It IS a good idea.

Thanks op. Ordered the 4 slice one from The Good Guys. Tried to price match it at HN via live chat but they refused saying that they don't price match 'clearance' products. Such a silly policy !! The nearest Good Guys that has this in stock is 1 hour of drive from my place but I am still happy with it though :)

    • cheers mate .. +1up delivered.. ;-)

    • HN … don't price match 'clearance' products.

      God you're hopeless Harvey.

Some of those retailers are kidding themselves with the price they are charging for this toaster.

Delonghi themselves are selling it on their website for $109 + $9.95 delivery

This toaster looks like it's collapsible.

  • 4 Slice toasters > 2 slice

  • In black, it looks like Darth Vader's helmet with a few chromed accents!

    • +1

may the DeLonghi be with you ;-)

      • I saw the toaster with my eyes closed. The Force works in strange ways.

  • My last delonghi wasn't deep enough, didn't toast the top of the bread! Also like most - 1 was browned toast and - 2 was the depths of hell. Don't know what 3 4 5 and 6 are used for.
