  • How do these compare to yesterdays 9020?

    • +1

This has a more powerful CPU (3rd gen i7, 4 core / 8 threads) versus yesterday's (4th gen i5, 4 core / 4 thread). Will be much better in multi-threaded tasks like video editing and certain games. Difference between 3rd gen and 4th gen are negligible so the hyperthreading trumps.

      • Will this 3rd Gen i7 be more future proof than the 4th Gen i5?

I won't be doing any editing, just general task and gaming.

      • Or will the 4th gen i7 be better aswell?

        like this one

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-9020-SFF-Intel-i7-…

        • Yes, the i7 should remain relevant for longer as programs / games start using more threads.

Both the 3770 and 4770 are close enough in performance (5-10%) you can just choose based on price.

  • Will there be any more 9020 (i5/SSD) stocks coming?

    • +1

      Not at the moment mate.

  • +3

Prior useful posts here, here and here..

  • +1

How would this go as a home entertainment PC? Just doing Netflix plus pulling movies from the network to play them on iTunes.

    • +1

This should be more than sufficient for doing that. You likely won't see more than 20% CPU utilisation doing those things.

      • OK thanks. Would the picture quality would be OK?

        • +1

What are you looking to connect it to? Picture quality has more to do with the monitor / TV because the i7 will easily do 1080p / 60hz via the integrated graphics.

4k playback is a different story as the output won't support 4k at 60hz.

        • @jeefbeef: That's perfect - I've got 1080/60.

        • +3

          @MJ1:

As someone has mentioned in this comment chain below, you may need to get a displayport to HDMI cable, since the PC lacks an HDMI output.

Something like this will do fine: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Displayport-Display-Port-DP-to-H…

    • My gaming PC has this processor, you'll have alot of headroom. Maybe pick up a cheap second hand 7950 then you can game :)

    • You'll probably need an DP to HDMI adapter or low profile GPU for HDMI.

    • +2

With the SSD, they'd be great. Should be right to go, straight out of the box. Bear in mind they don't have wireless networking built in.

You might need to add a cheap low-profile GPU for 4k playback.

    • more than enough.

I have no trouble doing that on an old machine running a Q6600 which is about 5 or 6 generations older.

haven't tried a lot of 4k though if that's what you might be aiming for.

  • 8GB DDR4 RAM?

    • 3rd gen i7, so it will be DDR3 RAM.

  • Can I put a graphics card into this unit??

    • +1

Low profile cards should fit fine. See GT 1030, GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti depending on your budget and needs.

      • I can get a GTX 770 build same price should I go for it. Will the older tech slow me down or will I lose anything not going with a GTX 1050ti.

They are roughly the same I think graphics performance wise but 770 has more power usage (+50W) and older tech.

        • The GTX 770 is about 20% stronger than the 1050 Ti so it is a worthwhile purchase for around the same price.

However, I don't believe the GTX 770 ever came in a low profile (half-height) variant so it would not fit into this unit. Even if there was a low-profile variant, the 770 would also require an external power connector which again, I don't think the powersupply in this unit would have.

  • I currently have a 2012 MBP - I have been thinking about ditching it to buy a desktop. You reckon this is an upgrade or will be a disappointment? I would not be using Windows.

    • Buy a refurbished dell latitude for $500 more. Get a docking station too.

      • The whole point is I don't want a laptop….

    • Depends, does your mbp have ssd and 8+GB RAM? If so, you won't notice much difference in normal use. If it doesn't, just upgrade your laptop and you're off cheaper.

Also.ask yourself whether you need an i7 processor. It's nice to have if you're doing things requiring lots of computer power, such as rendering or decoding etc. But for most average day to day stuff i5 processors do a good job

Also, pm me if you're selling your MBP 😜

      • MBP has SSD and 16GB ram (and the i5). Perhaps you are right…

        • Macbooks.make good pretend desktops imo, I'm using my MBA hooked up to a secondary monitor and apple keyboard / mouse, works great

You can even get one of those Hengedocks, just beware of overheating problems

  • Hope these don't get sold out before I go home

    • +1

      They did.

  • Have just bought one of your Optiplex 9010 i7-3770 3.4GHz 8GB Ram 128GB SSD Win 10 SFF for my kids to use, but a little concerned that the SSD may not be large enough.

Can I fit a spare 2TB hard drive in the case as is - is there a vacant HDD enclosure, or what would you suggest as an alternative?

    • This machine is too powerful for your kids to use

This is what you should be getting for them

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/359787

    • From comments by the seller in previous threads, if it has a SSD installed already, it should have the 3.5"HDD -> 2x2.5"HDD adapter installed. So you should be able to fit an extra 2.5" hard drive to that easily. Will then just need to hook up some cables, which may or may not be in there already.

If not, you can buy an adapter kit (with cables) for like $20-25 on ebay.

      • I am in a similar, but slightly different situation. I bought one of these PCs from another deal posted here a while ago, and it has HDD, so I wanna install SSD though I am not entirely sure how to go about it. I watched few YouTube videos of people upgrading them and one was cutting and soldering wires, whereas another had removed the optical drive and installed the SSD in its place etc. Can you please tell what kind of wires/cables (or other ideas/info) I might need to install an SSD on top of the HDD on these SFFs? For example, do you have a link for the adapter with the wires from eBay that you've mentioned above? Cheers in advance.

  • Warranty is 90 days - is that correct?

    • yes

  • Any major differences between Optiplex 9010 SFF and Optiplex 9020 SFF?

    • 9010 SFF has a more powerful CPU (3rd gen i7, 4 core / 8 threads) versus 9020 SFF (4th gen i5, 4 core / 4 thread). Will be much better in multi-threaded tasks like video editing and certain games. Difference between 3rd gen and 4th gen are negligible so the hyperthreading trumps.

      Plagerised from jeefbeef above.

  • Rep got anything with 16/32gb ram? Mrs needs a more powerful graphic design machine.

    • +2

      Add some ram?

    • You need to add a better GPU for design work instead of more RAM.

      • The current Quadro I'm using is a very good card and I'd put that into the new machine. Looking at ram prices atm I'd rather buy something that's already loaded with enough. Guess could always look into second hand memory.

  • hi wondering which one should I get this DELL i7 or the Lenovo
    i5 4590 3.30Ghz
    8Gb Ram + 256Gb SSD
Quadro 410 Graphics Card (more useful than a potato)
    Win 10 installed

I will use it for LR/Photoshop, AutoCAD.

    Thanks.

    • If you upgrade to an SSD on the DELL i7 it should give you better performance over the Lenovo. I would also consider throwing in another 8GB stick in there since Photoshop/AutoCAD use up a lot of memory.

  • Sold out of the SFF. Listing now changed to Desktop format

    • +1

Any plans on releasing the Optiplex 9020 SFF with i7 before the end of the promo?

      • No stock available at the moment :(

        • I guess I'll have to wait until next promo =/

        • @RichardL: Promo still has some time left, who knows what might land in.

I do have a few hundred of the 9020/9030 i7 in AIO's though.

        • @Calmago: What's AIO?

And why's is there so much influx of the refurbished Optiplex 9020's lately? Are all businesses upgrading their PCs at the same time???

        • @HarveySpecter: AIO are "All in One" computers. Refer to this

        • @Calmago: Not a fan of AIO. Looking for something I can "upgrade", such as adding a Graphic Card.

        • @HarveySpecter: All in One.

I can't comment on your influx questions sorry mate.

        • @RichardL: ahhh thanks for that

Yeh nah, I need to add a graphics card into mine so AIO aren't for me :(

        • @Calmago: awwwwwwww

    • +1

Can the desktop format fit more drives??

  • +1

AU $219.00 with 250G HD plus AU $25.00 delivery here
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-9010-opliplex-sff-core-i7-3…

    • That's an awesome deal

Is there one for for 4th Gen i7???

      Found one here: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Optiplex-9020-SFF-Intel-i7-…

is that a good deal? but its pick up only :(

      • The one he linked is also a 3rd Gen i7 but with 250gb Storage.

        • I'm after the 4th Gen i7 :P

        • @HarveySpecter: Personally, I'm waiting for this.

It has 4th Gen i7, 16gm RAM and 256GB SSD.

        • @RichardL: ahh i c

so an extra $200 for an extra 8gb Ram and 256gb ssd upgrade. Not bad!

        • @HarveySpecter: The cost of another 8 GB RAM + a 256 GB SSD, will probably amount to similar prices.

        • @RichardL: ahh ok

Yeh the problem is for me is that I already have a spare 500gb SSD so I'm hoping to find an Optiplex 4th Gen i7 with a crappy HDD (or no HDD) to lower the cost.

        • @HarveySpecter: That would make more sense for you, since you already have the SSD. I don't have any spare SSD.

  • How many hdd’s can fit in the desktop case?

    • How many Irishmen does it take to change a light bulb?
One. He is drunk, and he tells the bulb to screw itself.

However in your case their are 3x SATA ports - if one is taken by the DVD-Writer, that leaves two, with physical space for 2x 2.5" or 1x 2.5" + 1x 3.5".

Mind you that's from memory and i'm getting old.
Why don't you check the manual and get back to us?

  • This is the model of my work PC! I do have 8Gb and the minitower though! Alas Win7 as IT treat upgrades as separate projects, not acknowledging change is BAU. (And I have a non W10 app.)

    • edited.

  • This is pretty great. Just chuck in a 1050ti and you are good to go.

The next tier up for a 1060 and a step up in most parts will probably cost 300 AUD extra minimum.

    • You can't fit a 1060 in a SFF…

      • The deal was changed from the SFF to Desktop, which I'm assuming can fit the 1060.

        • fair enough

        • It's the desktop version, not a tower.

  • Did the original listing account for the SSD and hence more expensive or was it included with this price ($278.40)?

I have a Dell XPS 13 9343 laptop (i5-5200U, 256gb SSD, 8gb ram, intel HD 5500 GPU) that's currently hooked up to a mouse and kb. Would it be better to grab this desktop deal or connect my laptop up to a monitor?

I mainly want to do my work/browse/watch videos on a larger screen.

    • +1

Original Listing was for the same specs and price but with a 128 GB SSD. They ran out of the 128 GB SSD model and was replaced with the 500 GB HDD.

    • +1

Also changed from Small Form Factor (SFF) to Standard size.

      • Thanks mate. Would jump on this if it had an SSD :/

    • Yes but you should be aiming for $200 for the 1050 Ti, not $299

      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/342519

      • yeah, after 20% discount it's still $240, but I just want to check the correct model that will fit. Thanks

        • +1

          Yes that's the correct model.

      • Unfortunately prices of GPU has risen due to supply and demand for Bitcoin Miners.
