American Express Explorer $395 Fee 100,000 Bonus Member Rewards Points + $400 Travel Credit

1650

Amex today increased their sign up bonus from 60,000 bonus points to 100,000.

You will receive 100,000 bonus Membership Rewards points (in the Amex Gateway Program) when you apply online, are approved and spend $3,000 on your Card within the first 3 months of Card Membership. Please note, you must not hold an Amex (apart from bank-issued ones), or have held one in the last 18 months.

Membership Rewards points are well recognised for the great value they have when transferred to airline and hotel programs. For example, each MR point in the Gateway program converts to 0.75 points in the Virgin Australia Velocity, Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines Krisflyer programs.

It's especially good value to transfer to Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) at a rate of 2 MR points to 1 SPG point. Once in SPG they can be converted to many airline programs or used to book hotels - some great savings!

Benefits:

$400 Travel Credit every year to use on flights, hotels, experiences or car hire booked online with American Express Travel. You can use this credit to book travel for anyone you choose.

Earn up to 2 Membership Rewards points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases.

Smartphone Screen Insurance for up to $500 for screen repairs to your Smartphone when you pay for your phone or contract with your card.

Travel insurance, buyers advantage, purchase protection, and refund protection.

2 entries per year to the American Express Lounge at Sydney International (Kingsford Smith) Airport T1.

0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months — A one-off credit plan establishment fee of 1% applies to any balances transferred.

The $400 travel credit more than offsets the $395 annual fee.

If you have a partner/family member/friend and you both sign up for this deal you'll have enough points for a Marriott Flights and Nights package, which offers heaps of value (7 nights at a Marriott hotel and ~120,000 airline miles).

For example you could fly business class return on Cathay Pacific to New York with a free stopover in Hong Kong and then stay for 7 nights at the Fairfield Inn & Suites New York Queens/Queensboro Bridge (not particularly glamorous but a good base for a week of activities and includes free brekkies). If you can earn some more MR points through other promotions/general spending you can upgrade the hotel easily.

To make this redemption you'd have to convert your 200,000 AMEX MR points to 100,000 SPG points, then convert the SPG points to 300,000 Marriott points and ring their call center to redeem for a category 6 flight and nights package. In this example you would choose Alaska Airlines to credit the 120,000 miles and then redeem those miles for the business class flight at 60,000 miles each way from Australia to USA in business class. Alaska Airlines allows a free stopover on each leg of the flight.

    • I've done this for an upcoming trip, we managed to get United Airlines miles through Marriott and have 6 flight segments in business class through Asia for two people. Sadly United had a recent devaluation so now you'd need more points to pull this off :(

Wowee, that was one of the most detailed posts I’ve witness on ozbargain!

      • -1

Just copy paste from the last deal or on pointhacks, nothing new.

    • but you can't take your partner/family member/friend for this trip :p

    • +4

I don't get it but I gave + vote for the effort.

    • Wow that's a lot of work but amazing reward. Best part is that the transfer rate to SPG doesn't vary depending on Gateway/Ascent/Ascent Premium. So the Explorer would transfer to SPG at the exact same rate as the Platinum Charge. That's pretty impressive.
I wonder why that is the case though…

      • +2

The SPG conversion rate is also the same for the David Jones Amex cards, and the DJs cards have a separate "new customer" exclusion from the regular Amex cards, which makes them an easy way to pick up some cheap SPG points if they're offering a bonus points deal.

We used the (200k bonus trip) + (2 x referral bonus) + (life insurance promo [spend $50 and get $20k points- expired]) and purchased the Marriot Flights and Nights package for our upcoming Easter trip. I booked it before the United Miles devaluation (30 Nov 17).

Thanks to Amex we are flying business class to Japan and First Class Back home (Sydney) Via Thai airways + 7 nights at the Tokyo Marriott. I think i paid total tax of $500.

You could also upgrade your hotel tier once you have more points. Just need to call them up.

It's a winning card to me.

      • +1

Well done, enjoy the amazing trip!!

    • holy crap thats good value, compared to Qantas

    • +1

The SPG/Marriott deal quoted by red32 is indeed correct, however the issue is going to be trying to redeem Cathay Pacific flights to the US in business class. It's hard enough redeeming business class flights as an Asia Miles member, so the redemption opportunities for those using Alaskan miles is even more limited.

Aus-US business class reward redemptions are rare as hen's teeth.

    • Doing a little research…

convert your 200,000 AMEX MR points to 100,000 SPG points

What I've read twice now, the transfer rate is 3:1, so 200k, to 33.333k

      • Are you looking at the transfer rate for Amex MR to SPG or Marriott Rewards to SPG? Note that MR points are not Marriott Reward points. Amex MR to SPG transfers at 2:1 (I did so last week), so 200k MR = 100k SPG. Then SPG transfers to Marriott Rewards at 1:3, so 100k SPG = 300k Marriott Rewards.

    • The package is for one i assume. :(

    • dupe

  • Does this work with referral? If someone who already owns this card and refers me, will I get the 100k points plus 60k bonus?

    • Check their referral link

    • You, as the new applicant will get 100k and the referral will get 30k points (if your application is approved)

      • It's not possible to get the 160k points total then? Its either 100k or 60k?

    • AFAICT the referral links haven't been updated with a higher bonus yet. You'll only get one bonus in any case.

  • Previously enjoyed the 100k bonus points and cancelled the card after one year which was December last year.
I recommend this card! If wish returning customer can have the bonus too, I know it's not going to happen…

  • Any recommendations on what to use SPG points on?

    • Convert to Marriott Points, and book their 7 nights travel packages, which give 7 nights stay at a Marriott Cat 1-5 hotel, and Airline miles.

  • Does anyone know if you could apply for one if you had held supplementary card only?

  • +1

I saved almost $400 on 2 explorer cards from last Sep to Dec thanks to the statement credit offers

    • +1

Haha I don't even want to think about calculating the amount I saved (spent?) over all my cards from last September to December, the number will be outrageous!
Gosh I love the AmEx Statement Credits :)

      • I didnt calculate…i just clicked on savings button on the account for this card

        • Haha just did that… and got $691.07 on Explorer and $1056.50 on Platinum Edge.
The annual fees have paid for themselves multiple times over (2.96 times, which is almost 3 times)!

        • Where is that button? Cant find it.
Is it on the website or in the app?

        • @MathNerd: do you think it is worth paying $395 annualy?

        • @expert626: Yeah, it certainly is. Awesome points earn and other benefits :)

        • @MathNerd: Thanks for the reply.. Which one is better to earn more points? Explorer or Platinum Edge?
Are we able to apply for the Platinum Edge once we got the Explorer?

Also, how do you normally use the points? For flight tickets? Anything else?

Sorry, I am new with American Express.. Not sure which one to get. There is also the David Jones one, right?

        • @expert626: No worries.

Which one is better to earn more points? Explorer or Platinum Edge?

The answer to this question depends entirely on your spending habits. If the majority of your spend is at supermarkets or fuel stations, then the Platinum Edge is a relatively cheap winner.
However, if your spend is all over the place, then the Explorer is the better choice.

Are we able to apply for the Platinum Edge once we got the Explorer?

          Yes.

Also, how do you normally use the points? For flight tickets? Anything else?

Personally, I'm saving up the points for a few first class tickets as I can't stomach paying the asking ticket prices for them.
You can use the points to pay off your statement balance, or use it to buy gift cards as well.

      • Spend more save more…:p

      Especially the Harvey Norman deal!

  • So which is best. This offer or this one;

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/358371

    • +2

They're best in their own ways. Best differs from person to person. Do you fly Qantas exclusively so have a use for QFF points? If so then get your linked one. If you rather fly another airline, get this. Pretty simple :)

    • Both offers are good. Qantas points can be used for Emirates, which is awesome too.

  • @OP

Amex are opening an international lounge in Melbourne soon which will be available to Amex explorer cardholders: https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/credit-cards/memb…

    • Any word on date? I can only seem to find early 2018. I'm heading overseas in 3 weeks, hopefully before then.

      • Yeah can't help any further sorry it was supposed to be late 2017 and they pushed it back to "early 2018".

  • What’s the best way to use the Amex travel bonus. Can you use it on gift cards?

    • +1

Can you use it on gift cards

If that was the case, every OzBargainer would be doing that, rather than using it for their own travel or selling it in the Classifieds.

      • I just meant like a related travel gift card. Like flight centre.

        • +2

Nah, no gift cards or anything of the sort. You can get only airline, hotel and experience tickets.

  • already have 3 AMEX cards.
    cannot have more than 3

    • You can't get the bonus points anyway, if you have even a single Amex-issued card.

Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.

    • i.e. 2x Credit Cards and 1x Charge card?

  • Can additional card holder on some else's AMEX apply for this a still get 100,00 bonus points?

    • Yep they can.

    • 100,00

      100,000, fixed it for you.

And yes, if you're an additional card holder without a primary account then you can get the 100,000 bonus points.

      • Can the supplementary cardholder apply using the primary cardholder referral to get 30,000 referral bonus?

      • What would be the best way to keep my current explorer points?
I signed up as a primary cardholder a year ago and my partner is supplementary cardholder.
Now i would like her to sign up with my referral and close my account to get the extra 100k+30k pts, but not to lose my 220+k pts. How to do that?

        • You can transfer up to 50k per calendar year, so that still leaves you with 80k.

If you don't want to lose it, your options are probably…

          • Transfer it to a Rewards program (e.g. Singapore Airlines, Asia Miles) and look for a way to use it due to expiry
          • Transfer it to Starwood Preferred Guest (can sit there for a while due to no expiry)
          • Spend it on a gift card/to offset charges
        • @illumination:
Thx. Probably SPG it is. They might devalue the points, but at least it is a flexible pts program

        • @illumination:
How do i transfer them between amex accounts?

        • @maiuspala: There's a form you need to fill in. If you google it you should find it. "AMEX Membership Rewards transfer form" or something

  • I just applied American Express Velocity Platinum Card yesterday that gives you 100k and got it approved today. Can anyone tell me if this is a better deal than the Velocity platinum?

    • Pretty much the same I think. You got more Velocity points (this is 75k worth), but these points are 'generic'

  • Seems like a great offer! Personally, I'm worried about not being able to spend the $3000 in 3 months and the surcharges making it difficult to use everyday. Any good tips?

    • +1

      Buy egiftcards

      • Sorry for the question but I am a dumbass.

If I go to Woolworths and buy some Wish giftcards or JB Hifi Gift Cards etc - will AMEX recognise these purchases as groceries and count it or will they see it as a cash advance and not count it?

What about purchasing gift cards through ebay or paypal? Will amex recognise it as a valid spend?

        • +3

Buy wish egift cards through cashrewards 5% off, get 2 points per $1 spent (even better if you apply for platinum edge after getting your explorer card, plat edge 3 points per $1 at major supermarkets). It's an eligible spend.

  • Wondering if anyone tried applying as a Temporary Resident (Partner Visa) and getting approved? Hope someone can answer and help.

    • You don’t have a credit file here, so they cannot verify the info you provided.

    • Worked for my wife and me. I am on her 457 skilled temporary visa. I have my own business and had a hard time getting any other credit card in oz without a certifieds accountants statememt. Was a supplement card holder for a few months and then applied myself. No income statement needed by amex.

      • Thanks, precisely what I'm after. My partner is the TR, and she has her own business. She also has a joint mortgage and this credit check has been done on her credit file. Hope this works for us.

  • How does this compare to the 'business' version? https://www.americanexpress.com/au/content/business-credit-c…

    Looks the same to me?

    • Business has no travel credit of 400 but has 50k loyalty points if you spend $100k in 12 months. I don’t think it’s worth it to get the business version especially u get nothing if u don’t hit 100k spending and also 50k bonus points are worth around 19k velocity/krisflyer points which are not worth the 395 annual fees

  • Wow I got the amex velocity yesterday… damn haha, $400 travel credit > domestic return flight with virgin australia. I just received it and yet to activate, I can simply not activate and sign up for this card, correct?

    • Nope, they've approved you so you're not a new customer anymore. Even if you don't activate the card.

    • Honestly I reckon the Virgin card is on par (or better, depending on how much you care about Velocity).

You get 25k more Velocity points, and the free flight is better than the $400 credit IMO.

Even if you were to transfer out to KF you'd get about the same amount of points (1.35) = 74k.

  • Do we get both the 100k QF points & $400 travel credit once $3000 is spent on card?

I recall with one of the other cards that offered similar, the travel credit comes on the anniversery of your card opening, i.e. you get the $400 credits after the 12th month, which you would have then incurred 2 lots of annual fees being $395 x2 to get the $400 credit.

    • You get the $400 travel credit as soon as you are charged the annual fee which will be in your first or second month I believe.

  • Sorry if already answered but will you be eligible for the bonus points if you have a DJ amex?

  • I am after a new amex card for my wife and I - should we be signing up to this EACH separately and get 100k points each, or just sign up once and use supplementary card option (do you pay a yearly amount for this too?)..? For info, our credit card spend would be about $60k a year combined, but we do very little travel. Cheers

    • Supplementary card is 4 free

      • Cool. So if i sign up individually, i can claim 2 lots of 100k points, then close one (or both) before the next anniversary of the annual fee. Can you transfer points to others (to combine the points under one account…?)

        • Cool. So if i sign up individually, i can claim 2 lots of 100k points, then close one (or both) before the next anniversary of the annual fee.

Correct. maiuspala didn't really answer you.

Recommend you sign up separately to get the 2x 100k points.

Can you transfer points to others (to combine the points under one account…?)

          See here

      • You should apply one after the other so that the first one can refer the other and get the 30k referral points but make sure they update the link first as its only 65k at the moment. Also make sure you can spend the $6000 in a short period of time.

  • Anyone know why the referral link hasn't updated to 100k points for the referee? It is still showing 60k

    • It had been updated now!

  • I've always wondered why people don't rave about the AMEX Business Accelerator card (https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/american-express-…). It has a $160pa annual fee.

TWO Velocity/Kris/Asia/etc points per $ spent. Sure, it never has a good sign on bonus however you could get the Explorer (for the sign on bonus) and the Business Accelerator for ongoing spend earning 2 vs 1.5 FF points per $.

If you spend $50k through the card per year that's an extra 25,000 Velocity/Kris/Asia/etc points each year for $160. After the first year you would then get rid of the Amex Explorer and it's $395 yearly fee.

It says you'd need a business but it's free/easy to get a sole trader ABN for those who don't already.

    Thoughts?

    • +1

2 Membership Rewards per dollar up to 100,000 points earned each cardholder year

So it's only good for the first $50,000 of expenses that you churn through it per year. After that it's pretty much just a regular AmEx earning 1FF/$.
As a guide, $50,000 of annual expenses is $4166.67 per month. If you spend less than an average of $4166.67 per month, then this card is more value (due to lower annual fee). If you spend more than an average of $4166.67 per month, then the Explorer is more value as it has no points cap and will keep earning at 2 pts/$.

      • Yes, OK. Well, just for apples with apples comparison it will be earning 1.5 FF points / $ (= 2MRG points). However yes it is uncapped. For personal use I can't imagine many spending over $1k per week on a credit card, but I suppose those people are out there. if you have business expenses to put through it, then it makes sense. Thanks.

  • Does Amex BMW Card considered Amex directly issued card (hence not eligible for the bonus point)? Does anyone have any past experience?

  • I was a bit scarce on my earlier post which got downvoted to buggery!

The best combo credit cards is the platinum edge and explorer card.

Make sure you signup to the explorer first to get the points then the plat edge.

The explorer is on a different rewards program to the plat edge.

Explorer = 2 points per $ spent (works out to 1.5 frequent flyer points per $)

Plat edge = 1 point normal spend , 2 points for fuel and 3 points for supermarkets. (1 to 1 transfer to most airline programs)

After you have had the 100,000 points posted - call up Amex and ask for the two cards to be linked.
This will automatically put you on the ascent rewards program for both cards.

Hence you will earn 2 points/$ when you use your Explorer card and it will transfer at 1:1 to airlines, therefore effectively earning you 2 airline points/$ for all spend.

    Our setup is fuel/supermarkets = plat edge (2 and 3 points/$)
Everywhere else Amex is accepted = Explorer (2 points/$)
    No Amex = anz black

Hope this makes more sense and helps out anyone who ends up going down this path!

    • So keep all three cards permanently? and Pay the yearly fees for all? Looking at a new card combo for us (about $50k credit card spend per year) Cheers

      • Many people with 'premium packages' on their home loans can get the highest level bank issued card fee free, so I suppose the 3x cards is the option for these people.

Otherwise you'll have to do the maths of yearly spend vs points value to you.

    • I thought they fixed that loophole?
