Visitors do not have to pay the surcharge of US$ 40 per person per night and US$ 30 each for two persons.

Wow, so we don't have to pay literal bribes to the Government any more. How generous.

Bribes? Taxes. I’m pretty sure these payments just go into Bhutanese consolidated revenue, you know, just like the visa fees we charge people coming to Australia.
Bhutan might not be the destination for you.

Better off with a Spray bhuTan?

Mate, I have been to Bhutan for 3 weeks. It's a wonderful country, and these costs are not BRIBES it's the fee. Similar like an Australia Visa fee, like we charge other people like around 5k for a PR.

I strongly recommend to visit this country. Even though it's an Asian country it is completely different from others around it….

      • Interested to know if you travelled around by yourself for 3 weeks? I am a very experienced traveller and been to most places around the world but have not been to Bhutan, so any info you can give would be great.

I travelled on a motorcycle mate, started from Westside of Bhutan and exited from the east side. It's beautiful country with low Himalayan region. Everyone follow road rules (not like India) and is a secure place even during the nights.

People are friendly too, couple of times I was invited to their home after meeting them on road for couple of minutes. Best place to visit and do Hiking, Trekking etc., but bit expensive though - worth it

          @sii:

But don't you have to book everything in Bhutan through a tour operator? How were you able to travel on your own with a motorbike?

Hope I'm not asking too much. I've just always wanted to visit Bhutan, but didn't want to do it with an organized tour group. Any details/advice would be great! :)

The "per night" makes it a bit different to the once only Visa fee surely?

Anyway they are both simply gouging IMHO and any money to any government will be misspent.

      • +7

they have free health care and free university to any citizen. I bet you wish Australia did this.

        • -6

Indeed I do, if the services are good (have no idea), still doesn't alter my distrust of any government….wonder if they have a government mismanaged….woops sorry…..mandated broadband scheme LOL

        • +9

you wish Australia still did this.

Seems like a good idea, tax the comparatively wealthy (if you can afford to jet around the world you have more than most locals in Bhutan I suspect) to help build services for both locals and visitors. This is not some shifty border guard demanding 'a personal fee' to help you fill in the paperwork for a visa.

    1) Your link isn't even to the announcement.

    2) T&C should be in YOUR DEAL POST:

I was going to upvote this deal because I've previous heard that Bhutan is expensive. But according to lonely planet

    LOW SEASON
    (Jun–Aug)
Monsoon rains and leeches put an end to most treks.

So it sounds similar to offer people cheap accom in Darwin, in October & November.

Yeh I’m going last day of August for this reason

  • So, if I understand that correctly without such offer any visitor has to pay $200 per night just to be in the country? As without the offer, the visitor may then NOT choose not to pay…..

    • From what I have read the ~$200p/n is to pay for a tour guide, accomodation, transport, and food. So the money isn't just a tax, which isn't too bad.

      https://www.lonelyplanet.com/bhutan/money-costs

It does seems like a restrictive way to get tourists to travel a country.

Thanks for clarifying that. Guess I won't be going to Bhutan soon as I will not support such compulsory policies.

        • Consider that the reason the policy exists is because they are cautious of having too many tourist visitors, so they are seeking to both limit numbers (there used to be a set number of visas annually) and ensure that visitors bring a significant economic benefit.
I guess they are very happy to avoid tourists who place burdens on their community and infrastructure but who only spend very low amounts.

    • $200 a day is the visa fee

  • So what's the minimum you need to pay (ballpark figure) for flights, connections, hotels, food, fees and anything else that is COMPULSORY. Not including stuff that you can get at the local rates?

    Thanks!

  • Fact: Bhutan is the only carbon negative country in the world. And yes, it is a beautiful place

  • I believe the Singapore - Bhutan flights are probably not as crowded / popular compared to the Thailand - Bhutan flights.

I had booked the Singapore - Bhutan flight for my trip about 5 years ago. That flight into Bhutan was cancelled a handful of months before I was due to depart and I had to make alternative plans.

  • This is a fantastic discount. I travelled solo during this period and at the full rate + surcharge and still felt it was good value. Had a guide and driver all to myself. 3-4 star accommodation and a perfectly customized tour.
