    Is this safe?

    • Item description:
Built-in charging protection technology, it can help ensure safe use.

    • 30g for a 3A usb charger… no it's not safe.
It's cheap chinese rubish that no one should buy if they want to avoid having their house on fire one day, or get electrocuted, or just have their $1200 mobile burn to death.

You buy that $5 charger at your own risk, knowing your insurance would not help if you are in trouble.

It's a "travel" charger. It has a US/EU plug for when you go there. If anyone's house is going to go on fire, it's the hotel or whatever place you're staying. So why worry about it?

        • Just want to make everyone safe.
Eventually someone will die because one item will be faulty and will output 250V out on the usb output.
So yes, just use this as a temporary option when you travel maybe, but as a precaution never touch the usb output of those cheap chargers/power supply.
And if you care about your expensive usb device, just don't use it.

        • "So why worry about it?"
          Well burning to death hurts…
These kind of chargers are uncertified fire starters. BTW you won't receive any insurance if they discover an unsafe, uncertified item caused a fire

          @King Tightarse: Like I said, that's the hotel's problem.

Not yet tried mate, but ordered now.

Ebay is flooded with these bloody chargers

  • +6

This has hotel fire written all over it

Just stay on a low floor, or within jumping distance of the pool

  • Got one of these and it seems to be ok for 1.5 months in UK.

  • Great :)

There's a mental barrier for me that prevents myself from using a charger that costs a buck.

    • +2

Especially when you use it to charge a thousand dollar phone! (Or x3)

  • +3

Comes with a free fire extinguisher.

    US/EU plug, I'll pass.

    • "Travel" charger. You expect to bring an AU plug when you go to the states?

  • -1

We have Australian safety standards for a reason.
Cheap uncertified chargers from China are a great way to start a fire. 240v is not to be toyed with.
As a basic rule of thumb; if it plugs into the wall, get an Australian certified name brand product. There is too much potential energy with 240v.
Negging as I consider this a potential dangerous item (issue with product) no disrespect to OP

    • What are some Australian certified name brands? Not counting the ones that come with your phone.

      • -1

Any decent established brand that has met approval and has a reputation that they care about.
Alway OK with the big ones: Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Belkin, Arlec etc

Yeah but how many of them make 3 way USB chargers? I'm guessing Belkin might, but I don't think the others you named do.

          @lostn:
Really no idea. Point is the danger of the no-names. If you pulled a few of these down and saw the dodgy soldering, extra crappy parts, huge electronic mistakes such as missing protection diodes, millimeters separating uninsulated usb earth from live 240v, you would never even think about using them.

        • @King Tightarse: How about Blitzwolf? Are they AU certified? Or Aukey?

When you suggest sticking to Samsung or Sony, you're basically saying, stick to the charger that came packed in with your phone, which is no help if you're after something that can safely charge multiple devices. For traveling you don't want to bring one charger per device with you.

Max 2.4A per port, 3.4A total. So that's 2.4 + 1.0 + nothing, or 1.4 + 1.0 + 1.0. Not the worst but not super impressive if you want to charge 3 devices at a time. And if you don't intend to do that, or think you shouldn't do that, then there's no point getting a 3 port USB charger.

        • @lostn:
True, but at least it does what it says in the description (unlike cheap and nasty chargers) and is properly built. Not likely to burn down the house. Yes it's not superfast for 3 simultaneous devices but is quick enough for one device and good charger for 3 devices. I prefer this mostly due to the safety aspect and 3 charging ports.
