Surface Pro 12" Core i5 / 8GB / 256GB - $1499 @ Officeworks

260

Hi all,

I've been recently looking around for an ultraportable laptop and was considering the 12 Inch macbook 2016 512gb for $1499 at OW but I'm still on the fence when i noticed the surface for that same price it's only got 256gb of storage but it has a core i5 7300u instead of the underpowered core m5 in the macbook, you don't need usb c adapters unlike the Macbook & It's about the same weight. I do like Mac OS though….strokes chin

Edit: As the eBay deal has ended I revert this post back to the original deal through the Officeworks website for $1499

I read that as surface pro with 12 cores, didn't think i5 came with those specs.

I was wondering when Panos released the Surface Pro 12.

If you are going to purchase this, it's slightly cheaper on their eBay store for $1424.05 Shipped if you use the code P5OZZIE. You may change your deal to this if you wish :)

Any ideas how one could get some extra warranty on this?

Officeworks is usually great with any product faults IME.

    • +2

If you buy it through the Officeworks website you can purchase extra cover for 3 years $169.00 but you won't be able to use the eBay code so the cost of the Surface will be $1499.00 + $169.00 extra cover.

Thanks man. I'll call up and see if I can do this in store separately. I know they have, when I had to replacement my fitbit.

I've heard a metric shit tonne of things go wrong with the surfaces, so rather not chance it.

        • +3

Why are you paying for warranties and insurance, have you not heard of ACL?

        • +1

          @Diji1:

          2 years I thought, which isn't really enough. I'd like 3.

Check the reddit threads on the surface pro.

    • If you have a fancy credit card, it may offer automatic extended warranty…

      • +6

If you buy in Australia from an Australian business, you automatically have extended warranty. Companies legally have to warranty these for a 'reasonable period' which is easily 3 years for a device like this. Buying an extended warranty is a waste of money for something like this.

Can u give me a link to this thing Bargs?
          Is it easy to claim?

        • Sure and then you tell them and they say no, then you say I am going to the ACCC and they say ok, the 12 months later you hear back from the ACCC becasue they are understaffed and overwhelmed and by then you forgot about it because you needed a new laptop… or they say the manufacture reported back that it's life in the small print is 24 months, not the 36 months you assumed and on and on it goes.

The extra warranty isn't for anything aside us lazy folk who can't be bothered being made to jump through hoops like a trained monkey. I am well aware that is business intention in the first place and I am "being played" but then they all seem to do it. I had a SONY Amp in warranty for 9 months being "fixed" some years ago. I think they had to start from scratch and have some small child mine the materials in the DRC before having it refined, and the part manufactured. I rang the ACCC and my local state based authority, they never did anything and said nothing they could do becaseu Sony said they were having trouble sourcing parts and were attending to as quickly as they could. On the flip side, I took an "extended warranty" with Dell once, a week after it expired my monitor stopped working, they replaced it witin a few days.

On the upside, I had a Surface Pro 3 i5 since launch day and had no issues aside from needed to replace the charger, I know several people with them (2014 and SP3) and they have never had an issues either.

          @aljafari:

Easy ? what he is describing is the difference between fantasy and reality… It involves you being passive aggressive or threatening the importer, they typically are polite and say no, then you ring your state based consumer law office and/or the ACCC, worst case you need an appearance and need to explain why thy are wrong, best case you get an enforceable undertaking, they then proceed to ignore and they hope it goes away, in 24 months when you still persist and shill your self to the paper and TV and social media, they say there was a mistake and the paper work got lost and they were sorry and will have to modify their procedures so it never happens again :) which is of course just bullshit as this is their procedure :) … and by then you have purchase a new one because well.. you needed a working one :)

        • @aljafari: https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

I haven't had any issues getting someone like Apple to repair with this, though they always act like they're somehow doing you a favour instead of meeting their legal obligations…

        • @ruprectaus: Honestly, I know people who've had the same issue even after paying for extended warranties, they wanted to offer a pitifully low replacement value to make the problem go away rather than properly repairing or replacing. In the end that was only sorted by having the local franchisee who sold the warranty in the first place (who was still in business, luckily) giving them (the third party company that provided the warranty service) a kick up the backside.

Don't think by buying an extended warranty you in any way get things dealt with 'easily'.

        • @ruprectaus @ruprectaus @Bargs Thank u guys for making it clear :)

Microsoft warranty support is NOT like apple support, even though you are paying apple prices.

The one exception to this is if you have access to a Microsoft store, in which case it comes very close.

No Microsoft store nearby and you are going to be mailing your device in. The ONLY fix for a hardware problem is a refurb replacement, there are no repairs, and if it is out of warranty then the ONLY fix is going to be paying the full cost of a refurb replacement - $500-$1000.

      • Yeah, TBH, this is why I went back from a Surface Pro 2 to a Macbook. Showing up in a store and just basically going 'fix it'. Is an A+ warranty experience. Only improved upon by companies that do on-site services.

Good price. Payed $1600 pre Christmas and I thought that was a good price

  • +3

Surface Pro or XPS 13 8th Gen (2017) for a similar price? Thinking XPS as it has much better processor and more ports.

    • yep more ports and a higher pussay rate

      • You put extra 'a' in the second last word by mistake?

        • +1

Lol… what do you guys think of the new XPS 13 8th Gen 2018?

Careful of the repair costs - https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/4023535/surface-cra…

Extended warranty may be advisable else up for $596 from above.

i've heard that for 'warranty' they just hand you a new computer, most of the time with no questions asked.

    • That's accidental damage, not warranty. The extended warranty (may not / probably does not) cover that.

But yeah, repairing these rather thin and light notebooks / tablets these days is nigh on impossible. Apple never even repair their watches, they just bin them and get a new one, it's cheaper for them.

Lenovo seems to be one of the only exceptions, where you can fairly easily source parts and do a replacement yourself. Which isn't bad because it seems to be hard to find a physical store that sells them that you could take it back to easily.

  • I believe registering them on MS website gets 2 years warranty?

  • Any deals on surface pen and keyboard? Also, do you get a tax invoice for TRS?? Thanks

    • +1

I ordered via eBay and still got a Tax Invoice directly from Officeworks.
