Ring is pretty neat, but the fact it needs an ongoing paid subscription kinda put me off of it.
Irks me somewhat that places like Harvey Normans don't make note of this on the product description.

    • +1

You only need the subscription if you want to access recorded videos. I have the normal version.

      • For that kind of price they should allow access to recorded videos. Otherwise a modified xiaomi xiafang and standard doorbell may do the same thing at a fraction of the price, and still allows you to access recorded video through memory card.

  • Appears to be no stock in any the Perth store's

    • was in at Harvey Norman OConnor yesterday and they had a couple left, might be worth a call.

  • I thought about it… but then, my postie just takes whatever fails to deliver to the pickup point down the road… The number of times something like Ring would be useful for us… once a year maybe? Have CCTV and alarm already…

    -G

  • Is this compatible with HomeKit?

    • No but its IFTTT compatible which is pretty cool

Not sure what you want it to do with homekit though.

      • Thanks! Just so that everything can be controlled in one app, as all the sensors and cameras around home are already in homekit so it makes sense for the door-bell to be too (so that we can get the alerts, etc… as well as view the camera in real-time through homekit.

        • Yeah i know what you mean. But homekit really is about switching devices on and off right? This is a video feed. It will notify you on your iphone. Basically comes in like a text message (using notification API) you click on it and it goes straight to the video feed.

Not sure i know of any homekit aware door bells yet.

        • @unifex: I think it was announced to be coming but I get confused with which version compatible and when…
          http://appleinsider.com/articles/17/06/19/ring-ships-apple-c…

But the video feed is very useful when unified into Apple's Home app, we have 4 D-Link Omna's around our house with alerts of activities if we are away from home; super useful.
So long story short its a lot more than just switching things on and off (although obviously the switch is an important part to HomeKit).

      • I've tried the Ring Doorbell with IFTTT (to trigger Hue lights) - not sure if it's Ring, or IFTTT, but there's often a very long delay/lag, sometimes up to 10 minutes before the 'then' action is triggered.. so, yes it does work - just not instantaneous.

        • ive had the occasional delay on my IFTTT for my wemo maker on my garage (opens the door when my car is approaching the house). 99% of the time its reasonable (eg a few seconds)

I really don't like that IFTTT doesn't do boolean expressions

          eg if (x) and (y) then z
Would make it infinitely more useful

Eg if 8am and no rain forecast turn on sprinklers for 10 minutes.

this product is almost useless here unless you order takeaway 3 times a day 7 days a week. Postie don't even bother touching your doorbell, if gate is lock and no car in sight, card left. Door knock once, no response within 5 seconds, card left. Shoutout, no response, card left. The rest, you don't even know it's been delivered to your local collection centre.
TLDR, before you even manage to unlock the phone to open the app, postie already off to the next street. A modified $20 Xiaofang does the remaining tasks 100x better.

Aren’t thieves supposed to ring before breaking in tho ;)

I find it hard to hear current doorbell so having ability to have phone ring sounds better or if possible google home telling me there is someone at door

      • then invest in a louder doorbell, plenty of options available at a fraction of the price. I got the one from aldi that powered by household power source and my neighbour could here it too. Most smartphone nowadays have volume softer than an old Nokia, let alone comparing to a doorbell

        • +1

Unless you have owned both those devices you are not really able to make a good comparison. Ive had a number of different IP doorbells and the Ring Pro does a great job. asa79 the phone ringing is quite handy.

My postie knows I have the ring will ring and will ask me if I want it left (even with signature). If I do I open my garage door and he puts it in my garage for me. So its good if you have a good delivery guy.

    • when they see the stairs they have to take to get to front door here, they don't bother just leaves the card (or sometimes no card at all!)

      laughable.

  • Anyone know if you can use google mini as speaker for chimes for the doorbell?

  • I got one and found the postie now rings the bell. Where the old wireless doorbell in the same spot was never touched.
Video does not work all the time prob 85% of the time..

Is it worth the $ prob not.. we have a CCTV which is a lot better

    • Do you have the Pro version? I think the video quality from my Pro is better than my HD camera's. I looked at the non pro version and the video is not very good.

      • Have the pro version and the Chime Pro. Just now something went past the door.. could not bring up video and I am on the same wifi sitting next to the router.
So had to look the old fashion way off the chair. Noting there. So check the video that recorded.. 30 seconds of nothing. :) I mean black screen nothing

We tried there spotlight cams spent a weekend swearing at them and took them back. motion would not activate for people just ghosts.
They have two way audio, spotlight and alarm.. So would of been nice to get them working. $329 each though.
Gave up on the so called tech support and brought a Hikvision setup.
Quality of the 4MP camers is so much better then Ring and the 8MP ones a lot better :)
You have to remember they might be 1080 although once compressed as work via WIFI the frame rate and picture is not great.

        • Just out of interest is your router set to auto switch channels? I know the rings don't work on channel 12 (not allowed in the US). Perhaps your having that issue. Try setting the router to a channel see if that works.

What speed internet do you have ?
Not sure if the ring will route the video directly to your phone or it will send it out to the ring servers and back again so might not matter if your on the same the network.

        • @unifex: tried different settings.. switched through a few channels. bridged the router to another wifi router
Tried two different brand extenders I have also have the Chime Pro Wifi I have for doorbell
I am on 100mb Telstra cable.
Pretty sure it sends it via their cloud and back.
When having problems with the spotlight camera it still was not working 30 cm from router. The doorbell worked the camera played up.. Think there Beta as was just released.
It did not work next to the Chime Pro as well or extenders.
The Ring cameras where a bust.

I was testing a Hikvision before buying the NVR setup never a problem connecting, this was setup into a wifi extender via cat6 and a 12v power as cannot cable to where it is easily.
This camera comes up every time and running 4mp not the 1080HD.. Although not via the Ring Cloud.

Reading reviews of the same problems seems hit or miss.. I think they like certain brand routers.
I have the Telstra and my old Airport I bridged to to see if it was better.

          Help is useless :)

doesn't bunnings do 10% on pricematch?

  • +1

I want to like this product but cant. The fact that it relies on wifi kills it for me.

    • +1

This. Can't more people make poe video doorbells?!?

  • Bunnings will pricebeat by 10%

  • i've got a couple of jb gift cards that id love to use up.
door bell needs some attention; ive tried changing batteries but it is no good.
maybe try get jb to match bunnings 10% off price (or better of course) and use up these gift cards i have.

in my OzB spirit… my aim to to get my dafang camera up and running.
the cameras have been sitting around for 4months now. (i failed to set them up first attempt and gave up in frustration after spending an hour)
an el'cheapo wireless doorbell will be all i need if i can get this dafang up and running to an old tablet.

  • What a terrible idea. Let whoever knocks on your door know that you're not home.

    • It also acts as an intercom. Suppose you encounter a ring doorbell and speak to someone through it, how do you know for sure they are not at home? They may be too lazy to get up and answer the doorbell..

      • +1

actually makes it harder to know when your home because they don't know where you are when you answer.

        • Also has motion so if someone comes near the door it is supposed to go off.
Although I must be a Ninja as sometimes I can put things in the outside bin and come in and nothing :)
Motion is hit and miss the doorbell works everytime

  • Showing as $398 for me?

  • Looks like the price has gone back up
