  • Amazing

  • $34.75/TB cf $38.00/TB for 2000 delivery.

  • Can they be used in a NAS?

    • Any drive can be used in a NA, just attach it to a network and it become NAS.

    • There was a very recent post for 4tb red @$150 which are great for nas use.

    • +1

I wouldn't, desktop class drives dont have the error correction/fault tolerance for RAID setups. These drives tend to fall out of the RAID more often, than drives with specifically designed firmware for RAID setups.

  • Maximum Order Quantity: 1

  • Which enclosure fits this?

    • Good question - some of them only take 2TB max.

      • I look forward to someone's reply.

        • The Orico 3.5 enclosures are pretty good. I'm using one at home

  • $11.95 to Perth
    $16.95 with insurance

  • Sorry if this question is silly, but would this be a good choice for game storage?

    • +1

Yes, these drives are usually bought for the same reason

WD Black is best for gaming.

WD Blue is best for general-purpose.

But unless you're high-end, Blue also fine for gaming.

      • +9

A SSD is best for gaming if you can afford it. It cut my Fallout 4 load times from 40 seconds to under 10 seconds.

        • You don't even need a "good" SSD to reap the benefits for gaming to be honest. Even a cheap 120gb one will do if you want to spend as little as possible.

  • +1

Great deal but $9.25 shipping to Sydney 😌

  • Would these be okay for CCTV systems?

    • They were used quite often in HDD video recorders - I got my last one out of an LG - so I'd imagine so.

Id go a purple for 24/7 writes, but never hurts to have a punt.

For about $30 extra I can get 7200 rpm (compared to this models 5400) and 3 years warranty compared to 2 with the Toshiba DT01ACA300

I used to be a big WD fan but the past 3-4 years WD drives has left me somewhat underwhelmed although they are very reliable. The current WD Blue more or less are what WD Greens were a few years back and the three different tiers of performance was logical (Green, Blue, Black) now it seems you have to choose either low performance or high performance (blacks) with nothing in the middle. Now a 3Tb Black for $95 and I'd be all over the deal like a bad rash.

3Tb Black for $95 and I'd be all over the deal like a bad rash.

      Me too.

    • Your comment was voted up because it is right. Nuff said

    • The current WD Blue more or less are what WD Greens were a few years back

The drive id gives it away (WD30EZRZ). This is the SAME drive that used to be the 3TB Green 5 years ago. Nothing wrong with it, particularly if you are going to hang it off a network.

If you are looking for a data store drive inside a PC, it will also work fine.

If you are worried about speed (say for OS or current games) then an SSD is indicated over a black drive.

      • While there is nothing wrong with the WD Green's as such I would be hoping the firmware on the blues has been modified to not park the hard drive every 7 seconds as per the original WD green firmware (Which WD later released the tool WDIDLE to allow users to set a different time out because Green drives in NAS arrays were increasing their head load/unload cycles excessively)

  • R2-D2 hard drive?

  • Silly question, but how can I use it as external HDD??

    • By shunting it into an enclosure like this or this.

      • +1

That is the answer am after. Hmm the enclosure itself is jacking up the price. Perhaps bang for buck getting the plug n play external hdd.

      • Thanks!
so I will have to use a power source all the time. Anything to make it portable? and USB3.0??

        • By getting 2.5 inch HDD self powered via USB

        • +2

The larger 3.5" disks (in an enclosure) require a separate power source.

To avoid that hassle go for something like this 2.5" external HDD, where the USB provides the power required. They're USB 3.0 so should be quite fast provided you have a USB 3.0 port on your PC or whatever. I've got a couple of them and they're fine.

  • Only 5400rpm so will be a slow drive.

    • +2

Slower… These drives have 5400 which means they use less power and don't heat up even with heavy usage. Transfer rates are quite good and of course reliability is great because of lower rpm. I use these as secondary drives and no complaints at all.

  • Would this fit in a "Dell Optiplex 790 SFF Intel i3 2100 3.1Ghz 4GB Ram 320GB HDD Win 7 Pro Desktop" I bought from a deal here?

    • +1

Yes. There are 3x SATA ports, and enough room for 1x 3.5" + 1x 2.5", or alternatively 2x 2.5". The third SATA port is taken by the CD-RW. Source: Manual.

Note if you stick this one in you'll lose your existing (most likely) 3.5" 320G HDD.

  • I have a few of these drives for storage and they're great. 5400rpm is fine for media or larger files, plus they're super quiet.

  • +1

    Too late.

  • +2

Stock has been restored (not sure how much)

  • Thanks OP!! Needed a replacement 3TB for my dying 1.5TB HDD. hehe (Yup old random size)
