  • Thank you!! Bought 4 for $608.40

Nice one! I could only afford 1 right now, even though my NAS is 99% full :(

I've spent a fair chunk of my day going through and doing an Xmas purge of all unused media/files! Maybe give that a shot?

        • I keep doing that, but it hurts everytime. I have 14TB in my NAS right now, with 8 open slots, so i'll eventually fill them up.

        • @Mochaka:
          14TB with 8 open slots!? I'm jealous…

        • @Xebozone:

Yep, bought a 12bay Dell R510 upgrading from a microservrr. So worth it!

        • @Mochaka:
Nice! Power requirements are going to be much different, though! XD

WTF do you need 16TB for?

      • It probably is only 8Tb. They are in raid format where two mirror each other. This is one of the best back up options.

      • I've got ~8gb of fan recorded, and tv-rip proshot, concert recordings alone plus I slowly add to the that over time. Then you can't put all your eggs in one basket either so you need at least one backup. Preferably two for an offsite in case of fire/flood/burglary/acts-of-kid. That's 24tb before we get onto my lossless music (more concert recordings). Then there's my harder-to-find movies and tv shows which are smaller than 8gb but it adds up.

Thanks! I bit the bullet after being tempted to buy a couple more of these for a while.

  • These guys have pretty good prices even before the discount. Best of all no price jacking.

  • How well do these guys package the HDD's? I remember reading people buying from other sellers having only a couple of layers of bubblewrap when shipped.

    • Ordered 5 of these from these guys last week, the box seemed pretty well packed. bubble wrapped as well as paper to fill any blank spaces. It was pretty snug.

  • Can these be used to host a media server? Thinking about seeing a media server up using a raspberry pi but these might do the trick

    • +1

Yeah these are built for going in a NAS for serving files and such. They are made to run 24/7 in something such as a media server. I've got a few running now.

      • So do I still need a computer or something? Can it just directly connect to the WiFi?

        • These drives are just optimised for use in a NAS device - you'll need your own device for them to go in. Here's what this store has for them - https://www.computeralliance.com.au/nas

I've got a WD MyCloud EX4 that has 4 x 3.5" HDD bays I've filled up with the HDDs in this deal. It just hooks up to ethernet and has software/server running on it's own CPU / RAM.

I will probably go pick up in store, rather pay a little extra and get them straight away instead of waiting till new year for delivery

  • Apart from the fact that these spin a little slower, is there any argument against using them in a standard PC?
    Would they be more reliable?
Warranty seems to be 3 years, which i think is the same as their normal ones.

    • +2

There's no argument against using them in a standard PC other than the one you have made - they will be a bit slower latency wise. Not really an issue if you're using a SSD as your boot and apps disk and using this just for data..

You'd expect them to be more reliable and also generate a bit less heat - but with hard drives it does seem to matter more in the environmentals (heat, vibration etc).

As long as you have a good enough backup routine then really you are paying around $50/year for 4T.. so if you factor in this dying after the 3rd year and you are still prepared to keep paying $50/year.. it might be easier to think about it that way..

      • Thanks.

Actually thinking of putting this in a Dell Optilex 790 USFF i've got running constantly - it's currently set up to record TV but i really want something close to a NAS/backup device.

        • Hang on, what am i talking about? The USFF only takes a 2.5" disk. Oops.

  • Any recommendation for a barebone NAS? I’m currently using the WD my cloud so just a novice. Looking for something easy to use

    • hard to go past the usual suspects if you want 'set and forget' - qnap, synology.

they are simple and have a number of apps that are very useful.

if you wan to build your own then xpenology is worth googling - basically build anything with ZFS…

    • IMO your best bet is a HP Microserver with UnRAID running on it. Pretty trivial to setup and easy to manage!

Computer Alliance have had a few good deals from this sale - I picked up a Gigabyte AORUS 1080ti for $916 delivered - was $60 cheaper than MSY before the 10% discount.

  • They've just added $15 shipping.

    Now $169-10% + $15 = $167.10.

    • +1

      New price $185-10% + $15 shipping = $181.5

      • Like a bad movie.
Never ended up actually buying one…

Quote from Computer Alliance email inquiry "We are backlogged by about 1000 orders right now"

    • Does that mean they oversold?

      • Very good question. Basically i emailed them about pickup cause i live just down the road from their store. Got an angry long stress filled reply, and amongst all that was included what i quoted above lol.. Guess they didn't plan for it to happen, musta just unknowingly discounted just before sale n got subsequently hammered?

        • +2

          Hi Guys,

No we haven't oversold (we still even have more stock) but we were closed on the 25/12 and 26/12, to which when we came back to work with over 1000 orders from the eBay 10% off promotion (which they didn't mention to us before hand and started on the 24/12). So we are all working overtime to process everyone's orders to be able to ship them out as quick as we can.

I ordered two 4TB drives on Boxing Day, shipped next morning, received my order before 12pm today. Both of the HDD came sealed and sufficient bubble wrap around it. Thanks for the good deal!

  • Bit annoyed if missed this. I run 12 of them already in my ceph cluster and need another 6…. will have to wait.
