It's back. Apparently for 10 days only, no ABN required.

Hold my beer
You probably wouldn't be holding a beer once you are done with that data
Of course… he got someone else to hold it before he started.
You're not even trying.
- Tether your Xbox One and download 1/4 to 1/2 a large game.
- Download a 38GB astronomy catalog (that unzips to 148GB) for your star map software - https://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/news/ppmxl_catalog
- Download a large Linux distro.
- Watch 4K Youtube.
- Upload your photos to a stock agency en masse.
Those are just some of the options. No need to even bother with illegal stuff.
your star map software - https://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/news/ppmxl_catalog
900 million starsOMG… Thanks !!!
Awesome resource but be aware it's not 100% accurate.

Clearing 148GB for it is a bit of a pain too.
There are a few other smaller catalogs you should check out on the download page.
And a few external catalogs that aren't quite as big:
https://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/news/ucac4_catalog
https://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/news/usno-b1.0_catalog
https://www.ap-i.net/skychart/en/news/urat1_catalogRequires some knowledge of FTP and archiving software, but the instructions are pretty good. Love the Vizier service.
Oh and two more that aren't astronomy catalogs….The Apollo Flight Journal and The Apollo Lunar Surface Journal:
https://history.nasa.gov/afj/
https://www.hq.nasa.gov/alsj/And a nice moon map (globe) program for you. (Much smaller)

I'm paying $39 for 20GB direct with Telstra.
Wow! mind share your story?
$39 with 15GB is easy as pie. 20GB shouldn’t be too hard. They also have their own low price retail reseller as well, check them out.

$39 for 15GB
asked the person I spoke to for a 'data sweetener' and received another 5GB per month.
Although one person who asked for a sweetener only got an extra 2GB.I tried to hook that up just now and they're not budging on the 5gb sweetener, told me it's only for existing home internet users. so best they are offering me is $39 15gb. Are you a home Telstra internet user?
20gb at $49 a month here. best i could do.
What plan is this?
The '$39 for 20GB' plan ???
Jules baby, you always crack me up and then someone goes and negs you for it.
Something a little more helpful than jv's response:
15GB Data.
Unlimited standard national calls and texts.
International day pass included to manage your roaming costs overseas.
No international calling on this plan.
All Tesltra Sim only plans can be found here along with the Critical Information Summaries.
All plans include live sport. Data-free. Watch every AFL, NRL and Netball game live and data-free this season.
Watch every AFL, NRL and Netball game live and data-free this season.
How many games are left?
@jv:
Well there is a lot of Netball played around the world, so you'll probably have a heap of those to watch.
How long ago was this?
about a week.
Thanks. I'll give it a try tomorrow in store
This is $33 per month for 12 months after $200 discount
It's not a discount though is it? It's a voucher.
If you're planning buying stuff from them anyway then yes it technically would be 200 back in your pocket to pay your phone bill.
Shame they sold out of $29 Google Daydream's today or you could have bought 6-7 of those and sold them on Ebay for profit!
use it off an iPhoneX
do you want to buy my voucher from me for $200 to make your statement true?
There will be people willing to buy may be at some discount.
good deal if you want 20gb/mon. it is $6 more than the Kogan 16gl/mon deal when its 40% off. you are essentially forced to spend 200 at jb hifi, probably not hard
Kogan use the Vodafone network which isn't really comparable to the Telstra network.
i switched from telstra $40/mon to kogan. after 6 months, see no differece.
Funny thing is I actually find all three networks in inner Sydney to be about the same, they all have their black spots in different areas and none are perfect. Telstra is truly overrated, at least for metro Sydney. Rural areas might be where Telstra shines.
In regional areas Vodafone isn't a viable option, it's fine for the city though.
@donkcat: wow that sucks, how far out before you loose signal?
I switched from Optus to Telstra and am having a terrible time with signal strength. Optus was so much better in Sydney CBD. I can't get any reception from my bedroom and I live a few hundred metres from Central Station. Optus was previously fine.
My handset does not support band 28 and I'm hoping getting band 28 will help.
True story, went on a holiday from Brisbane to past Cairns and you know what, I was on Telstra and every time I wanted to make a call I had no coverage but my friend on Vodafone (of all networks) did so I used her phone, Man was I annoyed… Seems back in the day Vodafone got a lot of money from the government for highway coverage… Now a decade has passed and now vodafone use optus towers for additional reach, again Im hard pressed to say Telstra is any better… Yes if you head inland they are but even telstra coverage is spotty at best and only in major towns
The fact is you need a sat phone… if this is a real problem
I was up north of Cairns recently and had 4G virtually everywhere I went. Maybe your phone is missing a key frequency band?
The Telstra coverage map shows it's coverage should be quite strong up the coast as far as the Lower Daintree/Wonga Beach.
No international roaming on Kogan.
Telstra also give you 6 month Apple Music Membership ($11.99 value p/m = $71.94)
Isn't for existing customers? or is it?
Port out and then port back in
My brother works for Telstra and says that JB hifi cannot tell when someone ported out of Telstra.
At the end of each month JB get a report from Telstra showing commissions and they just get a lower commission for customers who just ported back into Telstra
Thanks Chum
Easiest way to port out?
Head to another Telco and get set up on a cheap pre-paid sim (usually $2 or less), but don't top it up.
JB / Telstra will see you as a new customer - Just make sure you're not in contract when you do it…
@SteveAkaKnoxy:
Thanks. Do you mean we can’t be in a Telstra contract when we port out?@Nitrous: Oh no, you can do whatever you want. :)
It's just, if you're locked in a contract, you're going to be getting a nasty bill for exiting the contract early.
If you're currently month-to-month (contract end-date has lapsed) or on a pre-paid, you'll be fine.
@SteveAkaKnoxy:
I see. Yes, will check out the exit fees. Cheers.
FYI: JB can tell when number is ported out. Source - I can tell and I work there.
Do you know the date they ported out?
Good to know, thanks. Do you have a strict policy of not giving the deal to Telstra customers? Do you and other staff even care?
Thanks for the heads up.
Would you be able to comment on whether I would be able to port out, then drop in to a JB store the next day to take up this offer? Will the staff have reason to deny me the offer based on the fact that I've just ported out?
@Ozkek: trust me no one cares, the more connects the store can get the better it is, all most stores care about is numbers on the board for their meetings with their bosses
@chumlee: we can see the date of the port out, yeah. It'll have service disconnection date on the account. With some deals it's a strict written "Must be away from Telstra for minimum 3 months", others it isn't. It depends on the offer. If the offer is applied incorrectly the store gets the contract reverse and some people may have the discount removed - it's always a gamble, but a friendly chat to a manager will clear it up.
@shake: if it's against our T&CS for this deal then yeah it'll be an issue. Chat to a manager though!
Yeah my mate who works @ JB said the same thing but everything went through fine. Ported out with Voda took around half an hour then ported back.
Confirmed - was able to port out to Vodafone and port back. Contract paperwork sent to my email includes the $10 discount.
No international calls with this plan
Just signed up with same deal last month at JB but didn’t get any voucher :( I asked and they said the offer was finished.
Half serious question - can I recontract to take advantage of this offer? Considering when I signed up they said that the gift card offer had “finished last week” only to bring it back the next month seems a bit of dodgy sales tactics.
Obviously it doesn’t meet the port in requirement but I feel I’ve been a bit done over as I was acting on reliance the deal had finished - obv if it would be back the next month I would have waited.
You have to payout the exit fee as you have to port the number out and back in Telstra to get this offer. Not worth it imo.
Can I 'port' in from Boost (already kinda Telstra)
When I joined Boost I had to port out from Telstra first. Not sure if the same applies in the opposite direction.
Spoke to a JB Hi Fi rep from the wagga store and he said yes.
Ok, so I had to port to vodaphone. Did it on the weekend for two mobiles under the same name, got the $400 in vouchers.
I tried last promo they had but they said Boost is considered Telstra and couldn't do it. They use the same billing system.
Nope, that's a Pre-Post upgrade.
So just to confirm (I'm with boost), you CAN'T get this deal porting from boost at all? Also, whats the deal if I break contract before 12 months with this deal? Thanks!
You can't get it from Boost - nope. If you break contract there's ETCs (normally around 50% monthly charge X months remaining)
@Chiselhendrix: Ok thanks man, one more question then, can I effectively port out of boost to VF and then port in from there for this telstra deal? Can JB see I've ported from boost like they can Telstra? Thanks!
@featherplucker: it's Possible but harder so give it a go I guess!
Yes, thats the go, I did it on the weekend. Try to port to VF about 90 mins before porting back into telstra.
Previous deal for the record: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/331294
That $200 GC could be handy towards the XboneX.. Just need to see if I can port "in" from Boost
Any tips for porting out of Telstra and back in quickly?
Buy a Vodafone Sim, port out, then port in
Do you know how long it takes to port out to Vodafone? Is this something I can do easily on my phone?
Was thinking of doing this and then walking into JB HiFi 30 mins later to port back to Telstra. Will that work?
In my experience VF has been the quickest. It could theoretically work that quick, but plan for a longer wait. I've ported within 30 mins before but I've also waited just over 24 hours
@jasong:
Good to know, thanks. Will port tonight and go to JB tomorrow then.it took me a few minutes, to get signal on new sim.
@jasong: Have you successfully done this and got the $200 gift card? Thinking of doing this but i'm a Telstra customer out of contract.
Worked for Telstra for 7 years, I definitely recommend waiting at least 24 hours between ports. We used to do it for customers all the time to help them get deals, and would port straight away to Optus or Voda and back. Now whilst 99% of them go through fine, there is 1% chance of it screwing up. Which resulted in people losing access to their number, 3-5 business days stuck in limbo. Once we employed a 24 hour wait it never happened again.
Took 5 mins to go out to VF, then hours to go back in to T
Trying to decide whether to buy iphone x out right and go byo or should I just go on a 24 month plan with about 60gb on it lol.. costs are pretty similar iguess except you are locked in for 24 months
Got money to burn mate? Hehe
Can you get a data share sim with this plan?
Right now I pay $34/month for 10GB with Optus and it lets me put another sim in my iPad that shares that.Yes.
From what I remember, Telstra has a $5/month Data Share Sim - JB can provision/activate those as well.
How much to Optus charge you for that second sim?
i asked about this recently and they wanted me to take a $15/month plan for 3gbTry simply asking them for a 'Data Share Sim' with no contracted data allowance, just sharing capabilities.
Tesltra can do it, the other guys should be able to.
Tried and they don't.
yes, they have a $5pm data share sim.
NOTE HOWEVER, unlike Optus….the Telstra Data share only works on broadband devices and tables. If you put it in a phone…it will not work.
Can someone please confirm - JBHIFI uses Belong which uses 4G Telstra network
If you were to sign up directly with Telstra, you would be on the 4Gx Telstra network?I believe you sign a contract with Telstra, not jBHIFI so you will be on the 4Gx network
JB uses full Telstra 4GX
Im currently on 8gb $50pm telstra with 8 months remaining on my contract. Any suggestions on how to get better then the rubbish plan I agreed to?
I've got 5 months left of contract for $105 with 5gb per month haha
Don't get a plan. The value of data is dropping so rapidly.
If it is a BYO plan(no phone attached) You can recontract with no fee to the $59 20gb option.
Can someone confirm, you pay $49 per month then after 12 months you start paying $59 per month?
Correct
Not what I was told by JB when I signed up, it stays at $49 until you exit the contract.
Not sure I could get through the 20gb in 10 days…
