  • In before "but the Galaxy S8 & LG G6 is cheaper/has less bezel" dribble.

LOL I am gifting my 2 month old S8 to the wife and replacing with this Pixel. Everything Samsung tries to do with its bloatware is just a poor copy of the native Android/Google version. Also, Bixby.

      • +1

Wow, not waiting for the Pixel 2 XL?

        • +4

Not worth the extra $600++ over this deal IMO.

    • Got an S8+ for $700 last month and it's been running quite well. I have got Adhell 2 to disable packages / blocking ads as well as the built in power manager to combat background apps. All these are achieved without rooting which is quite impressive.

Pixel still has a better camera in auto mode and way better software update. However, everything else is in S8's favor.

Just a shame it has no expandable storage! With 32GB and one of the best cameras on the market… it's useless.

    • +2

Not at all, this phone comes with free unlimited cloud upload of all photos and videos taken.

    • +8

Useless? You’re nuts if you only store all of your videos and photos on the actual device. Embrace the cloud, Google Photos is an excellent app.

      • Ok let's say, I go away for a holiday, I have no wifi for a week. I take a bunch of pictures on my holiday, last day my phone breaks.. I had no time to sync my photos and the pictures are on the broken device. With the sd card, I just pop it out and I still have all my data.

EDIT: Not to mention with 32GB I am limited with how many pics/vids I can take in that time, given I have other apps etc installed.

        • +2

What if you forget to remove your SD card because unless you are psychic, you wouldn't know when your phone is going to break?

        • +2

@Lorindor: If the phone breaks I wouldn't see why the SD card would be damaged. Unless it is like getting crushed under a boulder or electric shock somehow wipes the SD card as well. Losing the device on the other hand is the worst of both worlds.

        • +2

32gb storage might be useless to you, but it’s not reasonable to say that it’s useless for everyone. What happens if your phone is stolen? Lost? SD card is corrupted or fails? There’s a lot of what ifs. If you only store locally, you can kiss goodbye every single photo and video you’ve ever taken with that phone.

        • @Lorindor: SD cars has much less chance of actually breaking considering how tiny it is.. even if phone gets crushed.

        • @aja12: Didn't say to only store locally (but temp) as per stolen etc, you can only mitigate so many things. I'm thinking 32GB with apps and games won't leave much room for HD pics and vids. Not saying it's not good for anyone.. at this price even I was tempted but just don't think it will fit my needs if I really want to use that camera.

        • @Tcm9669:

Right, you're always travelling with little to no Wi-Fi access, therefore you cannot guarantee the backup of photos/videos to the cloud?

        • @Lorindor: Yes most of my travels are out bush well off the grid.

    • +6

Have you ever heard of a OTG adaptor? Couple bucks, take some standard flash drives with you on holiday and simply plug in, transfer and there's that issue sorted.

32GB on a phone is enough unless you're a horder.

      • That is true. I guess I'm just used to have expansion slot as it makes it easier and not having to play around with USB.. but I am a picture hoarder TBH..

        • but I am a picture hoarder TBH..

If you are not already using Google Photos, get on it. Amazingly good.

        • @goingDHfast: does it compress them and lose quality?

  • +5

Surprised none has noticed that this would go well with the weekends "Google Daydream VR Headset" deals if you need full compatible phone :-)

    • +9

Yep. Hands up if you made a $28 (or slightly cheaper) purchase only to realise your phone isn't compatible, and are now contemplating forking out nearly $700 to complete your bargain purchase.

  • +1

pull the trigger or wait for Xmas sales?

    • +1

They'll just discontinued this as soon as stock runs out I'd expect

      • +1

my concerns as well, sigh… Hey, I've got a new phone!

  • +3

Price has now been upped to $750 - bastards

    • +4

      Such greed.
