P5OZZIE

Have been looking to upgrade our Apple TV and this was the best price I could find for the 4th Generation (HD only, not 4K - don't have a 4K TV so am happy with HD only). Don't forget to use Cashrewards.

The good guys have it for $189 https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/apple-tv-4th-gen-32gb-mgy52xa
Pricematch with officeworks to get $179. Did this yesterday.

Argh - bummed I didn't see this. Oh well - thanks for sharing. Officeworks price match definitely the best way to go.

      • Is that you in the photo, you look like someone just introduced you to Tightarse?

    • +7

And you didn't post it here for us?

    • Would it also be in store today for $169 with the $20 off $100 deal?

      • The code excludes Apple as far as I can recall

      Pretty much good as new

Why would you pay $179 for a refurb 32GB when you can get one brand new for $189. Just asking because it doesn't make much sense to me.

      • Because it's apple, It's not meant to make sense 😎

      • -1

$10.05 saving for something that is just as good IMHO

        • Refurb is just as good as a brand new never used before and opened?.

        • @hollykryten: I believe so, comes with full warranty as is good as new. Bought lots of refurb stuff from the Apple store.

      • Doesn’t make sense for an Apple TV, however every single iPhone I have owned has been swapped for a refurb at one point or another so it would make sense to buy refurbished to begin with. I don’t think they generally sell them though.

  • Worth getting the 4k one? Is the only difference the ability to play 4K?

    Price is $249 from Apple

    • And better for general running of apps and games.

      • Ok thanks

Anyone seen the 4K model on sale?

      • Hahaha thanks

    • I think it’s worth the extra for future proofing, let alone the better processor for apps etc.

      • Yer I’m gonna wait for a sale on the 4K

I'm not sure how many games will be made for it. 4K apple TVs are a small subset of all Apple TVs which are a tiny fraction of the gaming market.

If you want to make a proper game using a controller you are looking at an even tinier fraction of that market.

What the extra power is good for though is being able to decode almost anything you throw at it. My Apple TV 4 would struggle with some shows served up from my NAS (which can't transcode to save its life), but the aTV4K takes it all in its stride. I've just set Plex to serve up the shows in original format and away it goes.

      • Thanks for this info.

I hadn’t considered the Plex side of things and whether the previous gen was capabke or not

  • Is the remote for this really as bad as what I've heard?

    I've heard it's terrible.

    • I've found its alright, its just a lot of swiping.

You get used to it, I'm not sure why reviewers etc hate it so much tbh.

      • You get used to it. But you also should take full advantage of the Mic button. Just asking it to Play what you want and it searches for it in all your apps! Awesome.

I will just walk up and say "Movie X" and it brings it up.

Plus the Remote App on your phone can also do it, and when you do have to type something in the keyboard pops up making it easy.

    • I quite liked it to be honest. Plus it’s the exact same on the phone so once you get used to one, it’s easy to transition

    • i wouldnt say terrible,
the main complaint is that in the dark it's just slightly difficult to work out which way is up,
having said that it is faaaaaaaaar from terrible

Just a word of warning for anyone that buys this to connect to their own itunes library of tv and movies.

Do not upgrade to tvOS 11; it’s bloody awful.

Just downgraded the firmware on both my v4 to 10.2.2 as 11 just kept crashing when playing movies, amongst other issues.

Haven't seen that at all… both my 1080p and 4K version work fine.
