where does it state this on their page? I can only see the standard $59/month giving 15GB

    • +4

Confirmed over chat by Telstra Representative : Currently, we are providing 5GB Bonus Data plus $10 discount for new customers on porting number to Telstra on $59 BYO Plan.

      • +4

Maybe just add that to the description - because simply signing up via the site kind of implies $59/month @ 15gb

      • +1

Signed up last night after confirming via chat as well. Rep was great - confirmed +5gb and $10 discount/month making it $49/month @ 20GB.

        Thanks OP for this thread.

        • Does the $10/month discount per month end after 12 months?

        • +1

          @MrBear:

Confirmed in the chat that the +5gb and -$10 per month remain even after the 12 months

        • +1

@spikiii: Thanks. I just confirmed and signed up with the same deal but on the Mx plan.

  • +3

why you do this Telstra… Why

    • +1

why would you say this overlook… why

  • +17

Got the jb hifi deal for this the other day with the $200 gift card. First time using Telstra, came from Optus. Gotta say, it's much much faster.

    • +2

Depends entirely on area and device. Locally on Optus I get ~60/40 and ~50/25 on Telstra. Both serve their purpose perfectly.

Only ever had problems with Optus in Darwin, seems their 4G can get a little congested at times up there. Worked fine for me in Melbourne in Adelaide.

Edit: Note when I had problems in Darwin Optus barely managed 2mbps down, Telstra managed only ~4-5. Not sure what the issue was, but both were pretty crappy. Also note I didn't have B28 back then.

      • +1

True, it will depend on the area. Consistently though, over the last week in the city, home, on the commute, the office, shops and elevators I'm experiencing load times close to twice as fast as what I've been used to over the last 3 years on the same phone. iPhone 6. I won't be going back.

        • iPhone (especially like 6) will generally works better with Telstra and Vodafone's network than Optus. If you have a Samsung galaxy 7 and later, in metro areas Optus can be faster with TDD CA.

    • -1

Metro Melbourne here, my experience is worse from Optus. I am more often than not on HSDPA or 3G.

      Hopefully changing phones improves.

      • Do you mean worse from being on optus or worse from transferring from optus to Telstra?

        • Worse from transferring. Whilst on the train, when I was with Optus it would hold a 4g signal. Now from a certain point it locks onto HSDPA and stays there until I walk around the city.

  • +4

damn new customers only, I just renewed my plan today, so the rep pretty much just gave me this offer but on the Mx plan. So I got 15gb for $39 a month. Still happy with that. Was paying $45 for 12gb before.

    • Ah man. I just did a recontract on the M plan $59 pm with 20gb (15 + 5).

      • Yeah to be honest, I don't always use up all my 12gb, but just thinking for the future since it is a 12 month commitment. Furthermore I am paying $6 bucks less, and getting more, can't complain!

    • +1

I just tried with Telstra live chat, and they said the $10 discount only applies to the M and L plans, not the Mx plan. Looks like you scored yourself a ripper deal mate.

      • +2

Yeah he fits offered me 15gb on $49 but I said that wasn’t a good deal, here is what I argued:

        • long term customer
        • have broadband and home line with them

I’m sure many of you guys fall under this potentially

Then I laid out the competitions offers:

        • Optus 15gb at $50
        • Vodafone 17gb at $45

So then he came back and offered a further $10 discount.

        • +3

I did the same lol, then he came back and said 'Telstra has superior network, so we don't price match because we provide better service blah blah'. So I kinda just left it. I'm paying $40 for 14GB and $1000 with calls for the moment. I don't mind the data (only 1gb extra anyways) but the cap on calls is kinda stupid :(

        • @epicttiimm:

Ah… yeah well I mean the good thing about Live chat is it's easy to close and reopen to find another person.

I had to upgrade my parents on a plan on Virgin Mobile, and what one person offered another couldn't, they said they had a different manager, it would be the same. I mean if you have time, playing this game of telstra chat roulette wouldn't too bad.

        • @epicttiimm:
Same kinda experience 12 months ago, so I left and joined Optus
But how could I refuse to come back given the jb hifi deal

        • You did really well, I just had to renegotiate a phone plan for the mrs. I didn't realise she was out of contract so they had reverted her to the $50 2gb monthly plan. I hit them with the deal Optus are offering for which is $40 for 15 gig, the best Telstra would do was 15 gig for $49 bucks.

        • thanks for your details… just got this great deal too :)
          awesome!!!
          Cheers,

        • @squaredonut:

I tried again today, and said the same thing expecting the supervisor to say something different, but she started saying 'I can see that my colleague has explained to you yesterday that blah blah blah, so we can't offer you this again'. Lol looks like Telstra chat roulette is dying.

        • @epicttiimm:

          Lol gg! That sucks

        • @Trendyk:

Yay for you! :D hopefully others get it too. $39 for 15gb is quite reasonable on a good network to me

I wonder if we got the same guy?

        • @squaredonut: my guy was called Gordon and wouldn't budge on the internet, phone and Foxtel plans, but quickly offered deals on the mobile plan :)

    • Was this via live chat?

      • Yep. Live chat

        • what time of day was this? I heard it is better to negotiate in the afternoon?

        • @Trendyk:

          Around 1pm?

    • +1

That is so unfair man! I literally just spoke to an online rep yesterday and was refused this exact deal as a new sign up! Even though I explicitly asked and have home broadband and phone bundle! Meanwhile optus don't give a crap about customer loyalty and are all about getting new numbers on their network! So I got caught between a rock and a hard place. Ended up recontracting with optus on the $40 15GB plan… You got super lucky!

      • Do you mean $30 for the 15GB plan which ended yesterday? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/330777

        • Same plan as what you linked to, but that reduced price was only being offered to new numbers. Like I said, optus don't care about customer loyalty, so didn't reduce the price for me as I am an existing customer and I didn't want to change or get a new number. Sucks to be me I guess…

        • @sAmiZZle:

I was an existing Optus customer and watched the 30$/month offer, so I ported to Optus pre-paid then was able to get the flash sale offer. Took a couple of days of mucking around but was worth it.

    • I just re-contracted sunday $49/ month 15gb M plan. They said thats the best they could do.

  • Telstra's current offers do my head in. Only two months ago had to fight for their $70 15gig byo plan down to $50 a month (existing customer). Would love another 5gig but no doubt in another two months they'll make it 25gig…

  • +9

I've cancelled my Telstra plan to go to Optus because they couldn't offer (or match) the JB Hifi promo to me last week. I've called up and spoken to their loyalty department and even escalated the matter to their manager. Nothing! Now they advertise this deal… motherf**kers. Worst phone experience with them and wasted my whole day.

    • +2

Oddly, I found my worst experience ever was with Optus.

      • +3

        Agreed,
Currently with optus after signing up when they had that 25 percent off deal with the S7. What a mistake that was.

Have had nothing but dramas. Some examples are

        • they failed to update my address when requested resulting in me missing a bill.

        • also moved house and needed a new modem for their nbn, they sent the modem to the old address for some reason even though I specifically asked for it to be sent to new address (had a transcript)

-failing to honour the 2gb bonus data for three straight months (numerous live chat conversations finally resolved it and I was reimbursed excess data fees)

Should have stayed with Telstra. Optus are a nightmare.

Pro tip if you have to request anything with optus live chat have the transcript emailed. Makes it easier to argue a point when nothing is changed later on.

        • So true ezz888. Had a real similar experience. Keep ALL your live chat conversations, as when nothing gets done, you have proof as to what was agreed.

  • +1

I'm out of contract, if I port out to Aldi, will they recognise my number as not being a "new new" customer when I ask for the port in discount?

    • this. just finished my 24 month with Telstra at $120/month for 6GB.. Would do this and churn back.

      • +1

        Last year I did this..
was with Optus and they offered 10gb for new sign ups for $50
I was on 5gb for $50 at the time .. they said they wouldn't change mine as it was new customers only.

I said no problem, walked 20m to the Telstra store got a 2 dollar sim and ported my number across.

Walked back into Optus 5 min later and ported my number back.
Having said that, I find Optus in cairns to be slow with the data and have drop outs

Eh. Chatting on Facebook and messages don't come though or everything seems normal, and then 2 hours later a flood of messages/texts come through from everyone

    • Someone mentioned a port out to any other network and rejoining won't work as they recognise a new customer as someone who hasn't been with them for 6 months or more.

      • Funny, do you have a link? I saw people mention previously you could port out and back in (even in the same day)

        https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/5105108/redir

        • Nope, I only read a comment on the JB deal a week ago, so maybe it was wrong, sorry!

        • @squaredonut: Sometimes this crap depends who at company X is dealing with you too, so both can be right. Some people are good at their job, others barely function to the scripts, some just have a bad day… who knows.

        • +3

ex Telstra employee here, and you can port out and in just fine. New numbers not new customers. Effectively it works as a new order on Siebel (the program Telstra uses), and that is how it counts.
We used to port people out and in quite regularly to help customers get these kinds of deals.

I'd recommend waiting 24 hours between ports though- so port out, wait a day, then go back to Telstra to port in. We used to do them same day, but 1/10 ports would cause massive issues with the number. Where they'd get stuck in Optus/vodas system, and not port to us, nor be useable with the old sim anymore. Once we started waiting 24 hours before porting back to us that problem disappeared.

        • @ONEMariachi: Thanks heaps for your input, much appreciated.
Would you suggest porting out to a non-Telstra provider or is something like Aldi Mobile ok?

I've read nightmare stories about people being left in limbo porting between Optus and Optus MVNOs.

        • @unco:

Optus to Optus MNVO took 3 days (2 business days).

          Lesson learnt.

        • @unco: We personally always used either Optus or Vodafone, just because we were on good terms with their stores and helped each other out. I was in Adelaide, so never personally experienced Aldi myself. I know boost was in siebel already and never counted as a new because of that(and was an absolute pain in the arse for us). So personally, I'd choose something not related to Telstra for it, just to be on the safe side.

Edit: Also, make sure, 100% that your birthdate is correct when you port, as the D.O.B and number need to match 100% or it won't work for prepaid.
If you're on post paid, you need the other carriers account number.

  • Their overseas roaming is bit of pain, rather than that, all good

    • +1

      What's the story with roaming?

      • +1

Vodafone's is better deal at $5 a day compared to $10

      • +1

Telstra give u $10 a day for unlimited call but only 500mb to use whereas vodaphone only $5 a day can use whatever ur Plan’s data

        • I thought it was 100mb?

  • +2

Hope a JB deal w/$300 voucher pops up … I'll have me summa dat, I/we are out of contract

  • +4

I got on the chat, and managed to get the following deal (I'm an existing customer):

    "Here's what I can offer-
How about go for the Medium BYO plan $59 with the following inclusions:
    - 15GB data allowance
    - UNLIMITED national talk & text

Not only that, I'll be happy to give you a valued customer discount of $10 plus additonal data allowance
of 5GB which will be applied each month and making the plan $49 with total of 20GB data allowance."

    • +1

      No international minutes though.

      • True, but with 20GB I can skype/whatsapp/etc all day long :)

    • I had a valued customer discount when I applied for a 12month $50 BYO plan a bit over a year ago. I asked about the MX plan and they said they could only give me and extra 5gb for $49 a month. I told them that on my current plan I have a valued customer discount and questioned why I'm suddenly no longer a valued customer when I'm switching plans with them.

The rep told me that my valued customer discount will be transferred to the MX plan should I sign up. Quite a nice discount to have since it is transferable to new plans.

  • Is there an expiry date on the discounts or offers? e.g. after 12 months it reverts back to normal price or data?

    • they usually last until you recontract, change or cancel your plan :)

  • I was lucky enough to sign up with the JBHIFI promo last week and I have to say that I have been VERY happy with Telstra. I have been getting 4G speeds of over 250Mbs using Speedtest. I never made use of the international calls offered on the $40 Optus deal so the extra Data, Speed and free Apple Music really seal the deal for me.

The $200 Voucher was just pure winning.

  • Just got on the chat, the rep said that I need 2 online services on one account to get extra 5GB. and $10 discount is for transferring customer.

    • Checked back with them again.
They says 5GB bonus data is only for those who have existing Telstra service.
So 2 services(mobile, broadband, bundle) in one account.

They already knew that this info came from ozbargain :(

  • No Foxtel Go I assume?

  • Does anyone know if this and the jbhifi deal include free streaming of Spotify etc?

    • No, it does not.

  • asked live chat to throw in an international pack to call NZ and home to the US, she said, sorry not possible.
asked to throw in the foxtel starter pack on the 49$ 20GB plan, said no also.
I explained and showed proof of my 12GB/300 minute international/Unlimited calls & Text + Optus sport for 36$/M - she said "sorry i cant help"

will just have to wait for the JB hifi deal again.

  • Got this deal from jb when it was offered, the gift card was an amazing deal paying for the next few big release games

  • I'm currently on a $40/10Gb month to month with Virgin… I don't use my full 10Gb each month but trying to decide whether the 6 months free Apple Music and NRL streaming, which will cover the full season next year for $9 more per month is worth it…

  • +4

    Cant afford Telstra prices.
Currently on Amaysim . $24 for 6 months. Thats $4 a month. for unlimited calls & text, 2GB data

    • +3

I know! Was reading above someone just came out of a 24 month contract at $120/month for 6gb!!
Long term contracts are crazy this day and age. Just doesn't make sense. Even bundling a phone doesn't add up.

    • not heard of that deal please tell more.

  • +1

I got the jb deal last week couldnt be happier. Speed test with Optus 4-7mbs from the same position on Telstra over 43mbs.
    😀

    • sorry which jb hifi deal are you guys talking about?

      • +1

JB had a deal just for the weekend where they gave $200 gift card if u signed up to this plan $49 20gb

  • I got this exact same deal last week in store. They were aware of the JB offer that's had just passed. Does anyone know if you can add a handset repayment to these BYO plans. I seen a comment on their FB page that indicated that you can.

  • I had placed the order earlier this morning, then I saw this post.
So I chat them back just now, the chat guy helped me got the extra 5GB data and $10 off.
    What a happy day
BTW, I'm an existing Telstra customer and re-contracted today

  • if i have a few months on my existing contract with another provider, and I port this across
what will happen with the old provider? can i keep paying monthly until the contract ends, or will they send me a bill for the whole few months remaining
    cheers,

    • normally a percentage x number of months remaining

  • lucky i got the jb deal, porting over from vodafone, Telstra 4g is slower. On the bright side, i used the $200 voucher on a note 8 :D dont miss my iphone one bit

    • +1

      telstra is slower than vodafone?

      • +1

yep noticeably, must be the area
