Kogan 1800W Portable Induction Cooker $32 Delivered

510
TAKE20

$23 after coupon, $9 delivery, is I believe the cheapest price ever for this portable induction cooker.

Previously posted at $38 and $39 delivered.

From previous discussions, we know the following:

  • the fan is noisy
  • the quality is average
  • the unit cycles on and off to achieve low power settings, and so warm temperatures are not consistent or accurate
  • the plastic to the left and right of the hob glass develop stress fractures easily, and since this unit does not have boilover detection it might not be safe to use once cracks appear
  • the base of your ferromagnetic cookware (does a magnet sticks to the base?) needs to be at least 18.5cm wide to work with the 18cm induction coil

$49 alternatives at KMart 2000W and Big W Contempo.

  • Bought one ages ago, works well for the price

Interesting that this is a safety issue.

I'm surprised that there hasn't been a recall and warning from the ACCC yet

I remember when the government pulled all the portable gas coolers because of an issue with the safety use of the device

The gas cookers would explode though. If anything, this should just trip the safety switch.

      • But could you get electrocuted if water was to spill

        • The safety switch is meant to trip first. With the gas cookers, there's no extra layer of protection… if it overheats, it will explode.

          @eug:

But as you said in the description, it might not be safe to use which raises a concern.

Does it have the Australian safety tick ?

        • @easternculture: er, I didn't post it. :)

          @alvian:

          Thanks

Here it is for whoever is interested

FWIW I've one thats VERY similar to this Kogan model - I suspect a common design is used to turn out multiple models - they just change the fascia/exterior slightly.

Word of warning is that the plastic to the left and right of the hob glass tends to develop stress fractures pretty easily. I'm a lil unsure how safe they are WHEN (not if) you get boilovers on them - as all the electronics are right below that and it'd be quite easy for liquids to get through onto them - and these units do not have auto-detection of boilovers as some builtins do.

Don't get me wrong, they're still great value and at these prices make me wonder HOW people justify paying $2-3k for a Bosch/Smeg builtin unit which is ESSENTIALLY the same technology just with a few more tweaks…certainly they're making some big margins on those!

Very good price delivered but I'd buy the Kmart one myself as has it's hob glass go right to the edges and steel exterior.

Got one last week (for $38 delivered).
It is much nicer than our electric stove top.
    In my tests.
Stove top 6.50 minutes to bring 0.5L water to rolling boil.
    This induction cooker 2.25 minutes.
Also drops down in temp quicker too.

    • Does it have an A tick

      • Yep…
        Approval Number: gma-102274-ea-013

        • Compliant doesn't always mean safe unfortunately

    • That's pretty slow.

  • Honestly, I would save up the extra and buy a K Mart/Big W/Aldi 2000-2100W unit for a bit more. The Kogan one just looks a bit cheap and nasty in comparison to my Aldi 2100W unit, and is less powerful to boot. I would be disappointed in myself for being so tight if I bought the Kogan one.

    Thanks OP for posting though.

    • I agree

I wasn't impressed by the quality of the Kogan either, that's why I provided alternatives in the post. However, I also have $20 referral credit that is about to expire, so I bought this for $3 + $9 delivery. I thought $12 is an acceptable compromise.

Kogan has a 14-day money back guarantee (delivery fee isn't included), but I wouldn't bother for my $3.

  • I just bought one last monday at 39. The shipping is really slow though. Have yet to receive it. Delivery delayed to wednesday. Does kogan refund price differences? :/

  • Thanks OP, a great price!

  • Thanks OP , bought another one , great for cooking outdoor , with the Aldi's cast iron pan , no worry about oil flashing aroung the kitchen , use to fry chip , fish stir fry , and the Tefal aluminium wok and pot also working ( bought here from myer long ago ).

  • I ordered one and some quilt covers on thursday morning around 2am received the package before 2pm on the same day. Really fast delivery, I was sure it was the wrong delivery, but nope it was all there. These things are great for the price. Very basic but it shouldnt have too many options anyway.
