  • One of the best WiFi Access Points

Troy Hunt has a bunch of articles about these:
    https://www.troyhunt.com/tag/ubiquiti/

  • I have one of these and highly recommend it. Excellent range and speeds using this, quick and easy to setup too.

  • I'm a pretty router noob. Does this work with VDSL?

    • It's only an access point, so you'll have to plug it into your existing router.

      • ah. okay. LAN only or does it work like a wireless repeater?

        • +1

LAN. You connect it to a POE switch, or use the included poe adapter.

        • @vee124: thanks. Can someone educate me on how this is better than using the modem router access point?

My wifi signal in my apartment is pretty weak, poor design of the apartment means I can only put the router at one corner of the apartment.

Looking for way to better improve signal strength throughout.

        • @lawyerz: This can work, although something like this should do the job as well if not better. You can connect external antennas to it which will allow you to focus the signal towards the rest of your apartment. With an omni design like this UniFi AP here, you'll be sending a lot of your signal to your neighbours.

        • @lawyerz: Usually cheaper, or even expensive modem/routers have really bad signal. By connecting one of these with an ethernet cable, you can run the cable to the other side of your house, and connect this access point. So to use this you need to have or be able to run ethernet throughout the house/roof/walls. If you have a POE switch, it can provide the power to the AP, so you dont need to plug it into power. If you dont have a POE switch, you simply somewhere between the router and the AP connect the included POE injector, which that plugs into power allows.

Overall I really recommend these AP, i currently have two (LR & Lite) and use concurrently with my Taipan router for crazy coverage anywhere in the house.

Since you're in an apartment i'm guessing it's going to be hard to run any cables, this AP should have much better coverage than a cheap router nonetheless, so you could put it near your current router.

        • @vee124: @eug thanks guys. What is the difference here between the pro and non-pro versions?

Or connect it via a Powerline adaptor (not as good as Ethernet, obviously).

  • Amazing price. Great AP.

  • listing has disappeared?

    EDIT: nope its back

  • Does this come with a PoE injector? Not listed in the package contents. Will the controller run in a headless Ubuntu VM?

    • What do you want the controller for? Seems overkill for home.

Looks like it runs on Ubuntu

      https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Updates-Blog/UniFi-5-5-2…

    • Yes and yes.

    • It will run on a VM. I run the controller in a Docker container

    • I run the controller in a headless Debian VM - runs under KVM hypervisor.

    • Can confirm it will run headless on an Ubuntu VM - I have the controller running on a Ubuntu Server 16.04.3 LTS VM on a headless ESXi 6.5 box. No need for a monitor, everything is web-based.

      • Once it's configured, you don't even need the controller running, as long as you don't need features like logging or the hotspot.

  • does this give an existing wireless network better stability? Or does it add a new access point?
Just wondering, do i need to setup all my devices to point to a new wifi AP?

    • +3

Access point. You don't have to setup your devices if you name the AP the same as your current and have the same password.

  • How do these devices perform as a repeater rather than a wired AP? Will the 3x3 thing help provide decent wifi speeds with an AC1750 wifi router?

    • I don't believe they can be used as a wireless repeater. 3x3 is only going to help if your device supports it.

+1 from me - great device. Have a large house with one upstairs and one downstairs, with a separate edgerouter plugged into the (bridged) cable modem.

  • Checkout Ubiquiti's Amplifi HD range too if you are interested in a wireless access point with a bit more included. The same seller? has the router for $180 with the 20% off code. Can mesh multiple together wirelessly or buy ethernet, has a sweet app to manage locally and remotely. They are dumbed down a bit from Unifi, but super easy to use and a bit more flexible.

  • Have a AC68U now and will be getting FTTN NBN next week (with a VDSL modem). Looking to improve wifi around the house since the router is located at one end of the house.

The Ubiquiti's Amplifi HD sounds like a good device to try but it's a lot of money!

For those that have tried this AP, and have set the SSID & password to the same as existing equipment, does it work and switch automagically?

    • +1

Moving between AP's is mainly controlled by the client device and not the AP, if your device likes to hang onto AP's until there's next to no signal then no AP can really help.

      • +2

You can set a minimum RSSI on the UniFi APs - so if the signal from the client device gets a bit low, the AP can drop the client. The client should then reconnect to the stronger AP.

Seeing that your router is on one end of the house, have you considered using a directional antenna with your AC68U? Right now half your signal is being sent to your neighbors across the road. It'll be like adding a reflector to a bare flashlight bulb - no point lighting up what's behind you when you're trying to look forward.

      • good idea! Never thought about trying this. The minimum RSSI sounds like a good approach too. I have the ability to run a cable to downstairs as well, but it will still be at the same end of the house. The minimum RSSI trick should help with handoff. Will google!

Looks like the AC-PRO has come down in price now that the new king AC-HD is out. I still believe that the AC-LR Long Range is the better unit unless you need that additional speed.

    • Waiting for a good deal on the LR,happend to know any?

      • $114.80 after 18% discount. Good price.

        • Listing has been removed :(

        • @sbrulz: You sure? just clicked on the link and it worked. Try again.

        • @sbrulz: No, eBay is a little wonky today. Has been happening since this morning. Try again and it'll be alright.

They are also selling the LR for $140 before the ebay discount which brings it down to $115. Seems like a good price to me

The thing with the long range, is that your phone/toy has to have the power to TX back to the unit. Often you're better getting 2 x Lite spaced out.

        • Ahh, there's a difference between high-power and long-range. The long-range versions simply have a higher-gain antenna, which means the signal is concentrated into a narrower area. Put simply, that means the same amount of power can go farther - it just won't go e.g. upwards into the ceiling and downwards into the floor, where it's wasted.

That also means the weaker signal from your phone will appear to be stronger to the receiver, because the receiving antenna has higher gain.

  • This is really good price. I bought 2 in last sale for $190 each after discount.
These are wireless access point for easy management. You can manage it by controller software. You use the software to configure settings & any change in configure is pushed to all unifi devises.
I have connected 1 pro via ethernet to modem & 2nd pro wirelessly to 1st pro & extended network in next building without cables. Client/device transition from 1 pro to 2 pro is seamless & any change in configuration via controller is pushed back to pros. Spent a lot but happy with my decision. I want to add 3rd pro to network.

I bought 2 AC Pro from Wireless1 previously for $169.2 after discount. Now I am going to add another AC Pro, US-8-150W switch and USG.
    USG current price $157.6
    US-8-150W Switch current price $266.4

Edit: The AC Pro price has been reduced to $184
