The data sim usually has no ability to make or rreceive calls or sms. However a while ago this wasn't always the case depending on provider so ymmv.

No. You buy the Groupon deal, sign up for Amaysim and enter code you received from Groupon. Then each month for 6 months your monthly quota will reset and you will not have to do anything.

Your number can only be ported and your sim activated after you receive the sim, which takes 2-7 days to be sent out. Not sure how long you can hold off activating the sim though. Anyway, youve got the deal from amaysim once youve entered your details and the sim is on the way.
You can hold off for a few weeks before you activate IF you are porting. I believe that it is activated straight away if you are getting a new number. I recently ported my number and I activated a few weeks after I redeemed.
So you can redeem on the 29 Sept, wait x days to receive the sim and then wait till late Oct before you activated the porting.
@Dungeon Master: strange. When I signed up on the Amaysim site to apply the groupon code it wanted my existing number straight away.

They only ask you for your existing number if you indicate that you are KEEPING it - to send you an unactivated SIM. Once you get the SIM you can activate/port it. It is sort of redundant as they should really send everyone unactivated SIMS and let them decide what they want to do during activation but for some reason they don't.
My question is what are people using these SIMs for? I went with the Lebara offer of 6 months 7gb data ~$20/month and I still have 4 months of that left. If there any point in me picking up this deal? I guess if I had a tablet or something that could use this or I was constantly running out of mobile data it would make more sense right?

Basically this can be used to replace elan existing mobile service, or you can purchase a new service.
If your family plan is NOT on contract, I'd highly recommend moving (porting) your number to this deal for 24 weeks, then moving on.

Amaysim activation dates - just spent a very confusing time on live chat.
I think the TLDR is: you must redeem the code before 30 September; you can activate at any time; BUT there is a "promotion expiry" that is "set by Groupon", and after this date the renewals will no longer work (so you should activate in time to get your renewals in before then). He cannot tell me what this "promotion expiry" date is and says it is only visible once the deal is redeemed.
If anyone has redeemed the code and can tell me when their "promotion expiry" is, please let me know! (the agent said you could see it once you redeemed the code). I just want to know if I can wait a month to activate and still get 6 full renewals, as I have a month left on the current plan.
The facebook team has a different story - they say I am fine to activate in Oct and get 6 full renewals so long as the deal is redeemed before 30 Sep and didn't know anything about an additional Groupon expiry. (Did not ask when is the latest to activate).
This makes a lot more sense… obviously they WANT you to activate it quickly (hence vague responses).

I activated my plan on the 21st. It says my promo end date is 17 February 2018. You can work out how long to delay your activation by calculating your 6th renewal to occur before 17 Feb 2018.
You'll find that the promo date is different for each person.
The system just calculates the date of your 6th renewal.
If people are trying to stretch it out as long as possible just give incorrect DOB or account number details.
This will ensure any automatic port will fail.
You can contact amaysim once you are ready to initiate the port
I don't think that is the case. I've calculated the date of my 6th renewal, it should fall on 8 February 2018 according to Excel.
I used 28 days multiplied by 5 renewals which is added to my start date (since your first renewal is Day 0).
So if 17 February 2018 is the same for everyone then 30 September 2017 is the last day to activate if you don't want to miss your 6th renewal.

You should be fine as the 6th renewal happens on 8 February 2018.Amaysim starts charge you on the 8 March 2018 for the 7th renewal.
I think 17 February 2018 is just the cut-off date for renewal charge.It doesn't mean you will need to pay from 18 February 2018.
Compared with my exp,I find Amaysim gives one week buffer for dispatch and activation.It tries to let your 6th renewal(on the 141st day) include within 147 days(21 weeks).In other words,if you activate the SIM after two weeks,you will miss out the 6th renewal and you literally get 5 renewals for free.
That explains why exp varies among people.Port or new number does not matter.

The way I understand it, you must order your SIM from amaysim by the 30th.
New numbers will have their 6 month period start from the date the SIM is shipped.
Ports will have their 6 month period start after the port has been completed.
Usually ports need to be confirmed by the user after receiving the SIM before it is initiated.
I have seen amaysim initiate ports automatically if not confirmed after some time (eg 3 weeks from receiving the SIM).
To guarantee that no automatic port occurs you need to ensure that the port fails eg. By giving incorrect DOB or previous account number details.
Then just go on live chat and let them know the correct details when you are ready.
Can someone please confirm whether such offers for "new customers only" require a different account, name, email address, etc. or can they be added as an additional/new service? Been trying constantly the last three days to redeem this offer. Groupon code works fine, when submitted keeps returning error Something went wrong, please try again or contact us on Live Chat. Live chat wasn't really all that helpful. Very annoying.
It worked for me yesterday. To avoid the error message don't select voucher as the payment method.

Careful with this one they do their sims wierd. If you want to transfer your number you need to put it in when you redeem the code and have a sim sent out. If you dont they send you an already activated sim in the mail that uses your days up while in the mail and also you can not transfer your number when you get it no matter what. My girlfriend already blew $24 on this to find it out. Needless to say no more amaysim for her!

When I try to make the payment with Groupon, I keep getting the message "The payment could not be processed, please check the payment details and try again!" No other details indicating what the actual problem is. I've tried 2 different browsers, both in a private window as well. No luck. I get the error no matter which payment method I choose - Mastercard/Visa, PayPal, Amex. If I choose PayPal, it doesn't even send me to the PayPal site. No joy from a quick Google, but others have had this issue.

I contacted Groupon. They wouldn't say what the issue was. Their solution was for me to just ask a friend to buy me the Groupon offer as a gift. Not very useful for making multiple future purchases. It also doesn't let me earn Cash Rewards.
Fortunately I found the problem. I use an email-address protection service called Blur from Abine to protect against potential spam. On a hunch I changed my Groupon registered email address to a regular one, and the purchase went through :)
So it seems Groupon won't work with some email protection services. Not sure why they just can't specifically state that. Would've saved so much hassle.

Very slow on porting… i have recieved the sim from amaysim.. requested to transfer my number on tuesdat, till now my ovo nuber is still active.. i have no credit with ovo as waiting for the amaysim to port..
