  • Sweet price. Too bad it's an extra $10 from the last deal but still a great price cause there's no cheaper alternative!

    • +1

Nextbit Robin with the ebay 15% off code

      • You'll get no support though as they've gone out of business and sold assets to Razer.

        • -6

And you think Xiaomi will be giving support. Hahahahahahaha

With both devices you'll get basically no warranty and be relying on LOS for Android (not MIUI) updates.

        • +3

@PainToad: This comment has been negged by the Xiaomi Army with not a single rebuttal as to why PainToad is wrong?

Can someone please respond, as I'm actually potentially interested in this phone but the above points are a bit of a worry.

        • +1

          @elektron:

If you're interested, don't let my comment put you off. I'm sure it's a great phone. Just as my Redmi Note 4G was.

But, I don't want people to have an delusions about receiving support.

Xiaomi make great value hardware, but their software (and updates) suck.

        • +2

@elektron: Didn't neg PainToad, but I can imagine that he was negged more for the attitude than whether what was said was actually right or wrong.

I don't think what he's said is wrong.

      • PHONE15 for 15% off on mobiles at eBay.

        • But none listed

  • Showing as $189 in the link?

    • Click 16GB model.

  • +1

    Band 28???

    • Nope. Very few of the chinese phones have it.

  • +1

    No NFC?

    • No. Only Xiaomi Mi ones have it I think.

    • Redmi phones don't tend to have NFC. The Mi phones do. Slightly pricier, but better specs.

  • +3

Great price and great phone. If you get one, lineageos (new version of cm) and resurrection remix are the standard roms.

Camera is not great but actually takes pretty good photos with the Google hdr camera app.

    Battery life is ridiculous.

Spare screens cost ~30$ and are, relatively speaking, very easy to install.

    • +1

      Battery life is ridiculous.

      Ridiculously good or ridiculously bad??

      • +2

Around 4100mAh capacity, so near the top of the field.

        • Yep - that's definitely ridiculous.

    • Spare screens?

      • +1

EBay /aliexpress. Get the ones with the frame attached

        • Ah… to replace it if it gets damaged. I've never had the guts to open a phone or tablet. Desktops and laptops are as far as I'll go.

    • -1

I thought you cannot install Google HDR as the CPU doesn't meet the minimum requirements (unlike the Note version which has a different CPU)?

I own this phone (32GB ROM/3GB RAM version) so would be nice to have an app that does better than stock photos.

      • I don't even own the phone but I've seen it mentioned here that a custom APK was released.

        • Why not get it from the Play Store? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.and…

Is it not the same app?

        • Presumably you need to root?

        • @flaminglemon: fair call, I get item not found when I click your link though so presumably not approved officially

        • @heineken016: I don't know how they restrict this. I can't find this on my phone through the Play Store, but I can install it when I click that link. Maybe it's because I originally had it when it was official a few years back.

I prefer using Xiaomi's stock one. Not sure about the APK, but official one does not give you the option to save to SD card.

In any case, I only ever use it for 360 degrees photos.

      • Sorry I somehow missed that this page was for the Redmi Note 4X not the the Redmi 4X (which I own). The regular 4X doesn't meet the minimum requirements but the Note version does, to my understanding.

  • Can't tell if this is the Chinese version or Internal version with global ROM. Does anyone know?
Can anyone let me know if they have bought from Shopmonk before and how long it took for them to deliver your order? Thanks.

    • +4

Got this phone delivered Monday came with global rom installed. If you are going to use 2 Sims I think better off with 32 or 64 gig.

      • +2

You want 32 or 64 if running 2 Sims as 2nd sim uses the sdcard slot.

        • +2

          I said that already.

    • 32 Gig probably better off buying through eBay using PHONE15 for 15% off. I can see them going for around the $200 mark from a fair few Chinese sellers (so $170 as opposed to around $190 at Shopmonk).

      • Gearbest have the 4/64 for $193 AU delivered but helio chipset.

  • Ordered on Sunday for $155 and hasn't been dispatched yet.

    • +2

I would reckon they just got new stock in because I received a back in stock alert last night. Must have been cleaned up after that $135 deal a week or so back.

  • +3

Damn it, I'm writing this comment on my $155 one….

Top phone for the price really!

Loving it so far and the battery is phenomenal.

Annoyed with MIUI 8 but have androided it as much as possible.

    • flash lineageOS?

      • or SlimROM which has even less bloat

        • Actually, no flash.

Just used an Android N theme and then run google now launcher.

SO still the silly settings and silly notifications.. I don't like it much, but don't want to go down the root path :(

        • +1

@lozza6: up to you, i can never stand MIUI because of all the bloat/crappy notifications system. PS you dont have to root, u have ot unlock bootloader though

        • @nathan-drake:

Interesting. I'll have a look thanks!

          Are they buggy much?

        • +1

@lozza6: no its a stable rom its been developed for like 4 months lol

        • +1

@nathan-drake: do I need to root for HDR Mod camera?

        • @spy: you dont need to root but you do need to unlock your bootloader and then flash a custom recovery and then flash a custom rom. thats the easiest way imo

        • @nathan-drake: ta mate, need to apply for bootloader access with Xiaomi I assume?

        • +2

@spy: yep. overall, just use the lineageOS official website instructions, except instead of installing a Lineage rom, just install slimrom with nano gapps

        • @nathan-drake: cheers

    • Dont feel bad Lozza… I paid $10 more than u and took almost 3 weeks to arrive :-(

      • You bought from Shopmonk or another shop?

        • Banggood… $168. Note 4X 3/16 SD

    • +1

Curious what you don't like about MIUI? The only thing I really notice is different is that there's no app tray, but you can get around that by putting everything in folder widgets, or using a different launcher.

      • +1

Lol, if you really think that's the only difference, you mustn't have used stock Android much.

        • It's been a while. I've had this Xiaomi for nearly two years, and I had an Asus before that.

        • +1

Yeah, I'm a stock android lover.

Coming from a Moto X Style and had a Galaxy Nexus before that.

I hate the MIUI notification bar and also hate the notifications. I can't expand them when they come in (they're separate/solo from the notification pulldown tray, but are integrated together in stock android) and the same goes for lock screen notifications. Can't expand from there, have to go fully into the system before I can interact like I used to be able to from the lock screen.

Also had to can all the battery saving stuff as it was so agressive and kept killing background apps which need to do their thing. For one, Glympse is useless as it keeps killing it and also I run a GPS polling app to have my google location history as accurate as possible. It would also get killed then i'd have huge dead spaces in my google location history :(

Anyway, for the price, great phone, and killing all the battery optimisation crap, I seem to have resolved most of my issues.

        • @lozza6:

You can expend the notifications, you need to use two fingers (like KitKat from years ago). So stupid.

        • @PainToad:

I know right, MIUI notifications are so dumb….. Even if I could just pull down to go into pull down with notifications. But no, all I can do is dismiss….

I guess i'll do Slim Rom or Lineage. I don't want super customisation. I just want stock android. Could I just use an AOSP build?

  • +5

From previous deal from Shopmonk delivery looks to have taken around 5 business days and DHL delivery included in the price which makes this an even better deal.
The Omnivision sensor takes great photos, the default setting is not set to the maximum quality so turn it up.
Auto updated to Android 7 and a new stable version 8.5.4 of the UI. UI is faultless so far.
After loading up with my apps and nav program I have 7GB spare.
Overall impression for the $… 10/10. Get a full cover case. Like all phones, they dont take kindly to being bounced.

    • Any recommendations on cover or case for this phone?

      • No. I ordered one with a clear part panel so you can take calls without opening the cover (not arrived yet). I think that the full cover type might be better with these big screen phones? Plenty of decent ones around for <$10. Delivery can take several weeks if os.

        • There's a Bakeey 360 degree protection cover on Gearbest. Have you tried it yet? It looks like an Otterbox one.

      • I don't bother. I have a redmi note2 which has survived many falls which would have broken more expensive phones; this cheap thing tends to bounce well. Also, at $150 I consider these things semi-disposable.

        • Disagree, my note 4 isn't 'fragile' but definitely isn't above average. Screens are cheap though

      • My case arrived today.. https://www.banggood.com/Smart-Window-PU-leather-Flip-Protec…
Flimsy plastic and the mount inside is thin hard plastic. It would give no protection to the corner if dropped. There are better for similar money.
Was 3 weeks delivery BTW, one day more than the phone.

        • +1

i got this i have one for my asus zenfone selfie saved it a few times bit big and ugly but do protect it.
          https://www.gearbest.com/cases-leather/pp_624787.html?

        • @paulaus: Wow.. Looks like you could drag that behind a truck!!
No screen protection so no go for me. PU leather with gel holder ones I have had before have been good so will try to find similar again. We should start a Note 4 / 4X topic in the forums / mobile? Would be a lot on here with them.

        • +1

          @xywolap:
I put a glass screen protector on the front usually they break because they land on a corner or the screen.

        • Ordered one of these… seem more suited for the job
          https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Printing-Leather-Phone-Case-…

  • Which of the Xiaomi Redmi phones are going to be the most suitable for a Nexus 6P that has suffered bootloop issue? I love the Nexus 6P and dont want to change - but its reset itself and not stuck in bootloop, so refuse to buy another.

Redmi Note 4X or Redmi 4X? I'd love to hear from someone who has made the switch.

Also - lack of Band 28? Is this impacted by using Kogan (vodafone) in Melbourne?

    • +1

Re: Band 28, I think you should be Ok on Voda. It can be a problem on Telstra network tho.

      • +2

I'm on Telstra. No problems here. Almost always on 4G, even inside buildings. I live and work in the metro area though.

        • +2

Some complain switching over to 3G/H while in underground carparks and even on trains. To me, I am fine with 3G since I am not a heavy data user.

        • +1

@dealspider: Same. I guess that was more as a comment for anyone else who is worried about connectivity. But I'm with you. I don't mind dropping speeds because it means I don't use up all my data too quick. Web pages are incredibly big these days. I have to use Opera Mini just so I don't exceed my limit.

  • +1

Just bought one of these. I have owned a Xiaomi Mi4c previously and didn't really have any problems without Band 28 on Optus. Have moved from 3195 to 3183 since having that phone though, so we'll see how it goes. I bought a case and a screen protector from GeekBuying because they offer TNT 3-5 day shipping for $6 USD.

    • I'd say you'll have better chances of staying on 4G, being closer to the city. I'd say there would be more towers to accommodate the population size.

  • thanks OP, just bought one, not sure why

    • +2

how about a humble upvote ;)

    • +1

      That's the OzB spirit!

  • +2

This, or the Motorola Moto G5, for an non tech-savvy ol' fart who only knows how to flash or root those of the opposite gender.

    • +1

Moto G5 for sure. Vanilla android out of the box which is superior to Miui.

    • +1

User name checks out….and candidate for comment of the day!

    • +1

From one very ol' fart to another .. I know nothing of the G5 but can say that the Note 4X will not dissapoint for the money. A lot of owners praised it and now I can see why!! Only complaint is that it is damn slippery so if you dont have sticky palms get a good case.

  • Hello, in regards to flashing roms. I've been looking at LineageOS and was wondering if the rom for the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 (Mido) would work on this phone? Thank you.

  • Anyone know how to work out how loud the headphone output is? (it never seems to appear in any phone spec) eg Samsung S6 is much quieter at max volume than an iPod or iPhone

Reason - I use my phone to play music for group fitness classes and the club caps the output of the amp so I need a good level headphone output.

    • +1

Perhaps buy a personal headphone amp. You can get brand name ones from about $50, so probably chinese ones for half that.

  • +1

Price has gone up to $162 for me

    • Bummer!

  • I can't believe it even supports hi-res audio at this price point

  • 64GB apparently cheaper by $1 after the sale expired

  • Anyones order still processing? I didn't remember seeing a ship date on the order.

    • +1

Yup still stuck on processing. Only been a couple of days tho.
