Mine does.
yeah but compared to what? I've used the same beans in our dual boiler + smart grinder and my folk's oracle. The grinder on the oracle doesn't compare to the standalone at all.
Sure it's easier but you can only change 1 variable.
I'm just saying - if you have the bench real estate, go the dual boiler + grinder combo
I'd say you're probably better at distributing and tamping the grinds than the machine is
I'd get the 920 & Smartgrinder combo because it's better value (when it comes up very cheap). I've got Smartgrinders and they are good, but the 980 grinder is as good. The tamping can be temperamental if your beans are not good. The milk steaming is nice being auto, but doing it manually does a better job (if you know how to do it).
There are 3 variables that you can adjust with the grinder in the BES980. The grind fineness, the packing tightness and how long to continue tamping after the grinding has dropped. It is in the menu settings.
@Sleepycat3:
that's a pretty good range of options - but it's missing one of the most important: the amount of coffee in the basket.
Mine is fine too. Had an Expobar and a Mazzer Mini before this. Still got the Mazzer. The difference is negligible. However, the milk frother on the Breville is crap. You need to use a lot of milk if left on auto. Switched to a smaller jug and manual on it now. Quality of materials is lacking on the Breville. The tray is scratched/marked like crazy. The stainless steel panelling is sooooooo thin. If you so much as lightly knock the panelling with the portafilter handle, it will mark and occasionally dent. The expobar, 7 years on, had not one mark.
My GF dinged mine when I was away. She was in truuuuble! :-)
Just my experience - but durability was the issue for me with the BES 900 series. I've had two. First blew up and was replaced under warranty fortunately, even though I think warranty had just expired. Second also failed - I believe poor quality components leaked and allowed electrics to be damaged.
Have now bought an Italian machine.This is often the case with appliance brands vs brands who specialise.
I work in a field where I see many of these machines (and competing brands of course) with faults just outside of warranty. Longevity is an issue, which is less than impressive given you can buy Italian made machines for the same price which will outlast them 9 out of 10 times.
They do make a respectable espresso though!
Anyone got experience with the Breville Oracle Touch BES990BSS - looks like BES980 but touch screen operated (and RRP $3500.00 whoa!).
Why would you? Costs so much extra and it seems only to give you touch screen control.
Not a bad machine, but still can't seem to produce a coffee as well as the plain breville dual boiler. I think it all comes down to the grinder - the built in one just doesn't have the setting granularity required to get a great shot.
